Dean's Birthday!
Who: Open to: Dean, Seamus, Dominic, Susan, Ernie, Alicia, Lavender, Oliver, Harry, Hannah, George.
What: Dean's birthday party
Where: The Roost
When: Sunday afternoon/evening/night?
Rating: SFW - for now

There had been no big shouts of 'surprise', Seamus knew Dean far too well for that. He'd just lead him up to The Roost after Battlescars and let him push the door open to reveal a sandy floor, warm salt-and-coconut scented air and a 'Starry Night' sky. There was a bar at one end of the room, stocked and ready for people to help themselves (Seamus wasn't working tonight, though he'd doubtless end up there showing off his cocktail skills at some point). Along the side wall were tables for the food, already containing Aunt Rose's jerk chicken and Seamus's attempt at a pineapple upside down cake, vastly outdone by Aileen Finnigan's cherry cheesecake next to it. The rest of the large room was scattered with deckchairs, apart from a small decked area for dancing. The music of steel drums floated from nowhere and despite the bleak grey sky outside the room glowed with sunlight.

"Thank you, Ernie, you're right, perfectly capable of making the effort." He really had, unlike for a normal Battlescars meeting which usually involved the nearest pair of jeans and a random t-shirt at best. Today he'd managed a clean buttoned shirt on top of a clean t=shirt and trousers. "Besides the paint is a hazard of the job." He shrugged a little and hugged Ernie and returned his kiss, as he had with Susan, although with rather less height difference.

The snort that escaped him at Ernie's suggested gift was unexpected and just made him laugh some more. "This was probably the wiser option. Although the sand with get everywhere, which I guess will remind me of family holidays so it's fine by me. Just don't combine the two, it's just asking for a world of pain."

"Oh I know you're more than capable of dressing up handsome, but it's always nice to have someone notice, isn't it Ernie," she asked archly, while Seamus hugged Ernie.

"Yes, Ernie did want an orgy - which I would have been fine with two," she said with a wink. "But in lieu of an orgy, and since the sand was already given to you, I'll just have to settle with giving you this." With a wave of her wand, she summoned a large, bulky package, wrapped in heavy brown paper. He didn't know it yet, but he was about to get the painting he'd been mooning over for weeks after he'd dragged Susan to a muggle gallery. "Go ahead, open it."

Dean looked at the package, which was clearly shaped like a painting, then looked at Susan, his eyes wide. "You didn't," he said with quiet disbelief. He pulled the paper off with far more care than he had with any of Seamus' gifts. His smile of wonder was small but full of heart as his breath hitched a little, looking at the painting. His love of bright colours was evident in his own work, but it was nothing like Afremov. He touched the surface of the thick daubs of paint ever so gently near one corner, fingers running over the bumps and edges of the dried oil paint.

"Thank you," he said, warmth and sincerity filling his voice. He couldn't believe Susan had bought it for him. He would never have afforded it himself, and didn't really want to think about how much it had cost. He managed to balance it against his torso and pulled out his wand, sending the painting bobbing gently over to the side, out of the way of the party. Then he couldn't help himself, he grabbed Susan in another hug, easily picking her up and swinging her around, before setting her gently back on her feet with a sound kiss on the cheek.

Susan watched Dean gingerly open the package, his eyes as wide as saucers. The moment she'd seen his face in the gallery, she'd known that she had to get him one of the paintings. The luminous quality and brightness of the colours had reminded her strongly of Dean. "Yeah, I kind of did," she said, with a laugh, grinning at Dominic as he casually took a photo.

"You're welcome," she started, before being drawn into a hug and being swung around the room. She led out a whoop of laughter and held onto Dean tightly. "You know I'd do anything for my boys," she said with a laugh as he put her down. "Besides, the gallery owner was very convincing."

Ernie laughed as Susan was swung around. The painting was gorgeous and spoke highly of both Dean and Susan's aesthetic tastes. He went to fetch his own gifts from behind the table, then once Dean put Susan back down, went to offer them to his friend.

"Here's some of Mum's roses, she says Happy Birthday too," he said as he handed over the bouquet. The specially-bred roses changed colour every five seconds, each on on its own private 'schedule' of colours, and would traverse every colour imaginable except for black - they would only ever turn black in the hands of a practicer of Dark Magic. He then handed over the other gift which was nicely wrapped and very flat - a book containing prints and information on long-lost and recently found sketches by Leonardo da Vinci. "And while it's no painting, this is from me."

Being showered with gifts on his birthday always made Dean feel simultaneously pleased and just a tiny bit uncomfortable. Maybe it was the being centre of attention thing, and maybe it was his limited means making him feel guilty that when he gave them gifts he never felt they quite measured up. He was still profoundly glad that everyone had come and should have a good time.

Running a finger over a soft petal just as the rose changed colour Dean smiled softly. It was an amazing feat that Ernie's family had managed in these roses. "Thank you, and say thanks to your mum too," he said, before setting them aside so he could open his other gift.

He turned the package around a couple of times in his hands, fairly sure it was going to be a book of some sort before he ripped into it. "Oh, lovely," he said, flipping the book open and finding a page of pictures and looking at them in fascination. "Brilliant present, keep me busy for ages," he said, pulling Ernie in for a hug.

"And now I am going to find myself a drink before anyone else arrives. The setting clearly requires things with little umbrellas!" He walked determinedly in the direction of the bar, willing for once to drink more than a single butterbeer.
