Dean's Birthday!
Who: Open to: Dean, Seamus, Dominic, Susan, Ernie, Alicia, Lavender, Oliver, Harry, Hannah, George.
What: Dean's birthday party
Where: The Roost
When: Sunday afternoon/evening/night?
Rating: SFW - for now

There had been no big shouts of 'surprise', Seamus knew Dean far too well for that. He'd just lead him up to The Roost after Battlescars and let him push the door open to reveal a sandy floor, warm salt-and-coconut scented air and a 'Starry Night' sky. There was a bar at one end of the room, stocked and ready for people to help themselves (Seamus wasn't working tonight, though he'd doubtless end up there showing off his cocktail skills at some point). Along the side wall were tables for the food, already containing Aunt Rose's jerk chicken and Seamus's attempt at a pineapple upside down cake, vastly outdone by Aileen Finnigan's cherry cheesecake next to it. The rest of the large room was scattered with deckchairs, apart from a small decked area for dancing. The music of steel drums floated from nowhere and despite the bleak grey sky outside the room glowed with sunlight.

"I'm plenty happy, love, but if you like, I can come by yours this week with some truffles and some of Mum's flowers."

Ernie blushed at her tone - if anyone knew how to 'put him in his place', it was Hannah Abbot. The only person in the world who knew him better was his Mum, and even she didn't know half the things Hannah knew. "Well, I want to find someone fit for Susan because she deserves a good shag at least. And Seamus deserves to be happy, and if that happens to encourage Dean to see him in a different way then so be it, because they're our friends and I like to do nice things for them." He snapped his mouth shut in an effort to put a stop to his babbling.

"As long as those flowers didn't come directly from your mother's garden." Hannah bopped Ernie on the nose. "And she knows that you're taking them too."

The blonde woman eyed her best friend. He was more than a friend. More than a brother. They might as well have been soul mates, without the pesky romantic feelings. "Ernie..." Hannah sighed, wishing she was wearing her reading glasses for the express purpose of looking over them to pin him with a very specific look. "Unless you expect all three of them to fall into bed together it's probably best to not set Susan up with Seamus for the express reason to make Dean jealous."

"Of course she knows. All I have to do is say your name and Mum's got some flowers and usually a dish of shepherd's pie ready with your name on it. And I think that's the only time Dad will ever talk to me these days, to ask how you're doing." But then, Ernie's dad probably still hoped Ernie would one day 'get over this phase' and marry Hannah, which was not going to happen.

Ernie's eyes widened with a nearly dreamy expression at the idea Hannah presented before quickly shaking it off. "Nah, Seamus is like me and wouldn't dream of shagging a woman. I meant find him a bloke, and someone else for Susan. They each need different things anyway. Sue can take either a shag or something more, but Seamus need someone long-term to love and understand him. And I figured that would be win-win - if Dean's jealous and that works out, then win, but if Seamus likes the bloke and wants to keep him, then that's a win too." He then went a little sheepish under her gaze. "Right?"

"Your father loves you dearly," Hannah said with absolute certainty. Merlin only knows that Ernie's parents had been wonderful in the aftermath of her mother's death, before that as well, and they were the closest that she would ever have to parents in this lifetime. "And he knows perfectly well he could ask me directly. He's just trying t make conversation. Next time ask him about one of his hobbies. It's simpler."

She couldn't help but giggle at the expression on Ernie's face. Hannah could only imagine what was going through his brain. "The fact still stands. That unless you intend to have the three pieces of the puzzle fall in together it's a bad idea to mix them all up. Someone is bound to get hurt."

It wasn't that she minded the idea of setting friends up with people who might like them too, but she didn't want anyone to get hurt. "And what happens if Dean's jealous but Seamus is with the other bloke? What happens to Dean?"

"All right, I'll try," he sighed, though the conversation was several years old by now, and always seemed to go around in the same circles.

He nodded solemnly. "You know, you're absolutely right. Plus, Dean might be upset tht we're setting Seamus up and not him." He then grinned brilliantly as the next idea came to him. "Which means I have to find someone for Dean too. Of course it can't be the same someone as for Seamus, no matter how hot that would look, but at least with Dean there's a little more choice. That way, everyone's got someone and everyone's happy, the end." He smiled as if that settled everything.

Hannah just laughed and wrapped her arms around Ernie's shoulder. "Don't ever change, Ernie." His heart was ten times too large and it was only Hannah's hope that he'd find someone who saw what she saw... but actually wanted to be intimate. "If you can wrap everything in a neat little bow, then feel free. But..."

She waggled a finger at him. "Don't even think about trying to set me up or I will be forced to turn my eye on you and then where will you be?"

He returned her hug with a laugh of his own. Nobody in this world understood him like Hannah did - some came close, but never quite. He did his best to look offended when she turned her finger on him, but instead he just looked amused.

"Oh, I know better than to take on such an impossible task - there isn't anybody in this world good enough for you, love." He leaned in to kiss her cheek. "And I think I do well enough on my own, thank you."

"Mmm." Hannah wasn't so sure, but she wasn't going to make that argument now. Especially not in the middle of a birthday party. "I think that's enough dancing for now, thank you very much. And all this talk has tired and dried me out. It's time for a fruity drink with an umbrella."

Linking her arm with his, Hannah lead the way off the dance floor and near the refreshments. "Are you going to partake in fruity and frivolous or are you going to go all serious with straight liquor?"

"Hannah, it's as if you don't know me at all," he joked with a completely straight face.

"I'll have one of both."
