Knock, knock, knock! Vaan stood outside Gabrielle's door on her front stoop, rain pelting the bare skin on his neck and face. He'd just arrived back in Greenville from his mission with the King's men, but they had not succeeded. They had been ambushed on their way through a neighboring kingdom's forest. No one else had appeared after the knights had scattered. Not even Domenic, and Vaan had panicked. He knocked again hurriedly on her door and ran his hands over his wet face, shaking the rainwater from his hair, "Gabrielle! Please open the door! Its me, Vaan!" He had flown back as quickly as he could and told the men at the castle first before heading to Gabrielle's.
Not a day had passed since he left that she wasn't on his mind and there was nothing he wanted now than to know that she was safe at home. So many of the people in the surrounding villages were sick with the Grey Death and Vaan worried about Gabrielle and the people of Greenville. He had taken to writing in a journal while he was gone and hoped that maybe he would become more comfortable, or at least more aware of his emotions by doing this. It only resulted in him missing Gabrielle even more, and it was hard for him to continue without knowing whether or not she was okay.
He knocked one more time, praying that she would answer. He knew it was late evening and she might have been sleeping, but he needed to see her now. Needed to tell her about Domenic and the rest of the men. They had made absolutely no progress and may have lost many men in the process. Looking down at his boots he ran a hand through his hair and blinked the rain from his lashes. 'Please open the door Gabby', he thought, 'Please'.
