Something inside him tripped and he realised he had let his guard down. This would be unacceptable in the eyes of his elders. When she stepped back he too stepped away toward the fire and pushed the hair out of his eyes, straightening his vest and collar. "Don't be sorry, there's nothing anyone can do right now," he said, sounding a bit cooler than he had intended. His face softened, "What I mean is...I'm sure if anything comes up we'll know. I intend on going and looking over our route for clues tomorrow morning. If I find anything you'll be the first to know."
He didn't mean to have such an extreme change in emotion, but sometimes it was too overwhelming for him and he wasn't sure of how to adjust or react.
