I have no fucking clue what they're all saying.

What the fuck?

....I discounted it as French for some reason when I first glanced and skipped to the comments for translation. Looking back, I can see that it's a dialect.

Alas, it killed any enjoyment I might have had, especially considering the voice in my head saying all of the dialog is now Ebony.

Very cool stuff, thanks for posting this. It's not quite up to the level of his work a few years later, but ALBERT is still refreshing and a delight. One thing I always liked was the underlying dilemma of a world where almost every living critter is sentient. What do they eat, if not each other? The fish in particular seem to object to being on the menu.

I don't know how to make the dialect clearer if you're having trouble with it. Maybe sounding it out in your head, or reading it out loud might help. The way these varmints talk (and confuse themselves) is a big part of POGO's appeal to me, perhaps it's just a question of being familiar with Southern speech.

Maybe it's because I'm Scottish and so am somewhat used to heavy dialect, but I had no problem reading that whatsoever.

Certainly a damn sight easier on the ears than bloody Gambit!

I'm from Alabama.

I STILL discounted this as French or something on first glance.

Hmm. Scans_daily is having trouble with the "accent" Walt Kelly used in his Pogo tales! I know! I'll provide a handy-dandy translation, seeing as how I'm having no trouble with it.

A-hem.

OWL: Shucks! The fish keep slipping off of my hook.
ALBERT: Owl, all you do is complain about your missed fishes, when I've failed to catch more fish than you'll ever know!
OWL: LIES!
ALBERT: Ha! I've won awards for the amount of lost fish I've lost! Once, there was a catfish 6' long!
OWL: I've almost caught fishes 7' long!
ALBERT: I don't believe it!
OWL: You callin' me a liar??? I'll whip you with my fishidy pole!
ALBERT: And I'll defend maself!
BUG: Yippe! Fit each other into the riggin'! Ma sakes, whut a passel of derring do--

Wait. Walt Kelly's Pogo is supposed to be enjoyed as it was originally presented, accent and all.

Aren't there regional dialects in Mexico, where someone from a big city would speak quite differently from a rural dweller a few hundred miles away? I imagine a comic showing the difference would make sense to a Mexican reader but most Americans would be lost.

Years ago, I saw a French comic that had subtitles at the bottom of each page. From what I gathered, the man burst in and said something to a woman using the familiar form of address, "Tu?" She replied "Not so fast, I don't know you that well." The translation had him calling her "honey," to which she objected the same way. I think the essential meaning came across.

You are right. And just like with english dialects, even english speakers would be clueless about what is being said without being familiar with a particular dialect.

Anyway, this was a little easier to figure than Scottish D:

I certainly had no problem figuring it out - and while I am American, I'm about as far away from that dialect as you can possibly get. (Of course, I've read Pogo before...)

Mentioning Scots dialect reminds me of John Buchan's thrillers from the WW I era-- THE THIRTY-NINE STEPS, GREENMANTLE, THE THREE HOSTAGES. Absolutely great, but when his characters got all Scottish, it was like reading one of Tolkien's notebooks. Whew. Sounding it out was a big help.

DAMN STRAIGHT that's half the charm of it! You can't remove "de fingerbone of incredulity" without hurting yourself, you know.

Although this early(?) Walt Kelly style is freaking me out, especially 'round the muzzles. Pogo looks so angry!
