The Beatnik life with Jack Davis

Here's a few samples from the first issue of YAK YAK in 1961, from Dell (there would be a second issue in 1962, not a sign of fevered public demand for this material). Weird comic. No ads, and some of the art was in regular four color but most was an odd experiment. The figures were left white, while the rest of the panels were light blue or pink or green. No borders on the panels and the dialogue was in rectangular balloons. It might not have been very good but it was distinctive. This was a style we later saw split-off Gold Key use on DR SOLAR.
Whether he was doing humor or horror, adventure or Westerns, Davis was always unique and enjoyable. Too bad the writing on this was so weak.

HAPPY EASTER S_D !!

From DELL FOUR COLOR #103, 1946 comes this cutesy Easter bunny story. Fun for all ages, and it might just make you say ***awwwwwww!***. By the legendary Walt Kelly.

NUMBHEAD

You get so used to these old kid's comics being so moral and borderline preachy that it kind of surprises me when I find one like this, where the message seems to be one of intolerance and undisguised bigotry.
Hate mongers rejoice! This one's for you!

EVERYBODY'S GOT NEPHEWS AND NIECES
So, comic lovers, I'm sure you are all familiar with Carl Barks, right? Well, he made the ducks so popular that almost every character in Duckburg got their own solo series. Unfortunately, he didn't have creative control in any way, shape, or form; so duck fans ended up getting stuff like this:

THE FAB FOUR GOES FOUR COLOR
Following is a sequence that you may not remember from the film YELLOW SUBMARINE. Can't say with any certainty where this originated, either. Dell/GoldKey (actually Western Studios) their primary goal was to get the licensing rights. So this could have come from an early draft of the script, or from preliminary storyboards, or the staff could've been given a one page summary of the film and then been left alone to get the comic out by the deadline.* Whatever the situation was, it's still an enjoyable interlude to read, and they didn't do so bad a job of mimicking Peter Max's art.
*It was not unusual for them to release TV or Movie adaptions without ever actually watching the source material first.

MOTHERLY LOVE, JUNGLE STYLE

Here's another of those cutesy animal stories that ran in various Dell/GoldKey titles as backups to the cover features. This one features a character from DELL's LASSIE series, CHEENA. This story is from LASSIE #25, November, 1955.
