Aren't there regional dialects in Mexico, where someone from a big city would speak quite differently from a rural dweller a few hundred miles away? I imagine a comic showing the difference would make sense to a Mexican reader but most Americans would be lost.
Years ago, I saw a French comic that had subtitles at the bottom of each page. From what I gathered, the man burst in and said something to a woman using the familiar form of address, "Tu?" She replied "Not so fast, I don't know you that well." The translation had him calling her "honey," to which she objected the same way. I think the essential meaning came across.
