RP: Obscurus Books Presents
Date: 26 March 2003 (through early Thursday morning likely)
Characters: Everyone who'd like to come, plus various NPCs! Children Welcome! Add your tags!
Location: Obscurus Books & Cafe
Private/Public: Public as public can be!
Warnings: PG to start, if things get kinky, please use the subject line of the first comment to rate appropriately!
Summary: Just another day at Obscurus Books, until the storm hits and traps people inside.

Gareth looked around the bookshop with pride. Children were sitting enthralled by Marigold and her husband as they performed flashy magic tricks. Logan was hosting a small cooking class, teaching everyone from housewives to retired Unspeakables (though Gareth though it was highly unlikely that there were actually such a thing as retired Unspeakables) how to bake enchiladas. His Maddie was graciously signing copies of her latest best-seller Emerald Isle, and open mike poetry night would start in a half hour, followed by a rousing karaoke contest. All in all, Thursday was shaping up to be a wonderful, and profitable, night for Obscurus Books.

Roger & Terry
[info]cc_terry
2009-03-26 06:31 pm UTC (link)
Terry was nervous. It wasn't a new feeling for him at any length, but he wished he could stop being so high strung all the time. There was no reason for butterflies to be swirling around in his stomach at the thought of Roger coming here. Just because both his parents, and the Beauchamps, and Logan who'd growled like an over protective older brother when Terry mentioned his date were all here, and not to mention Ben as well, was no reason to be quietly freaking out in the corner that maybe this had been a bad idea and he should have just suggested take-away curry and a snogging session at Roger's flat instead. There was no denying that Terry had thought a lot about Roger and his kisses over the past couple of weeks, and that he wanted more of them, this time when they were both males.

He was just about to go into the bathroom and stick his head between his knees for some deep breathing when he saw Roger walk in. He took a deep breath, smoothed down his brownish-orangey-yellowish sweater, wished his hair was less fly-away and went over to say hello. He'd just about reached Roger when he realized that Roger would likely not recognize him without breasts, and he had no idea how to introduce himself gracefully.

So instead, he just smiled brightly and said, "Hi!" and hoped that would be enough for Roger to guess who it was he was.

Roger & Terry

It wasn't terribly hard to figure out who it was he'd just been greeted by. He might have, perhaps, paused for a moment after Terry greeted him to get a look at the male version of Terry. He looked kind of like the female version, but... definitely different, of course. Perhaps Roger ought to have felt awkward about taking a moment to, well, check Terry out, but he really didn't. It was a natural thing to do, since the last time he'd seen Terry there had been a rather different figure to him, you know?

"Hi," Roger replied, with a slight grin.

Terry was completely oblivious to the way Roger had checked him out, too busy wondering how it was possible that the other man had grown even more handsome since the last time he'd seen him, and he felt his pulse flutter when Roger smiled at him if such a thing were possible. That should be outlawed surely, he thought, feeling rumpled and under-dressed when faced with Roger's casual chicness, or whatever it was that made clothes look much better on Roger than they did on Terry, even though they were both wearing about the same thing.

Roger's shirt pulled across his shoulders and fell straight at the waist and his jeans were tight at the thigh and loose at the ankle and fit perfectly, whereas Terry's sweater was likely rucked up in the back and had a small, almost invisible stain on the right sleeve where he'd dipped it in coffee earlier and not noticed, and his jeans were slipping low on his waist because he'd forgotten his belt again and he kept tripping over the legs because he'd bought them slightly too long and hadn't remembered to perform a shortening charm as of yet.

"Hi," he said again, realizing he'd been thinking about clothes long enough that the silence was starting to become awkward. Well, more awkward. "I'm, um, glad you came." He glanced down shyly and rubbed a hand over the back of his neck. "Would you like coffee? Or tea? Or a cappuccino? Logan makes fantastic vanilla caramel mocha cappuccinos, if you like really sweet things, or there's regular coffee of course, and hot chocolate. And butterbeer. Wine, too, if you'd like." He stopped himself from talking anymore, in hopes that Roger would suddenly remember he'd left the oven on or anything.

"I'm like that with Charms," Terry admitted. "When something's got a hold of me I can't stop until I've worked it through, even if it means skipping meals and nearly collapsing with exhaustion. Of course, my mates at work don't let that happen near as much as it used to, not after the whole Sex Change Incident anyway. Nowadays they force me to stop after eight hours, sometimes ten, if I show no signs of coming out myself. It's okay though, as I'm actually working better now that that's a rule." He stopped for a breath and noticed the way Roger was shoveling away the fruit.

"Are you hungry?" he asked baldly. "I mean, there's sandwiches and those enchiladas I mentioned if you want something more than fruit. I didn't even think about dinner, but you probably haven't eaten yet and I know I haven't eaten, so maybe I should have gotten sandwiches first instead of eclairs. Did you want me to get you something? Or call Logan over?"

How in the world could Terry talk so much? It was something that, perhaps, baffled Roger a bit. While he could hold his own in a conversation, he didn't think he could talk half as much as Terry did always. But, nonetheless, he was hungry and Terry babbling on about food was fine by him. Especially if it meant that he got to eat real food.

"A sandwich would be great," Roger told Terry, "if you wanted to go grab that, I'll save this spot?" Because, really, he didn't feel like migrating... or even like getting up at all, and Roger had a tendency to be perfectly okay with getting other people to go get things, etc. He preferred it when he didn't have to.

Neville and Harry (and Ron?)
[info]cc_neville
2009-03-26 08:11 pm UTC (link)
Neville wasn't sure why he agreed. He wasn't in the mood for socializing, which was probably why he needed to. The alternative was to stay at home and brood, or with Gran and brood and deal with her very direct prying.

So, he'd showered and changed into a warm jumper and denims and headed to Obscuras, to meet Harry.

Maybe a night out with his mate could get his mind off of Charlie.

Harry was still smiling widely when he entered Obscuras to meet Neville with Ron. The plan had been for him and neville to come so they'd stop moping about missing their Weasley, but now Ron was hope.

Harry chewed his lip for a second, hoping Neville wouldn't mind that Ron was here. He didn't think he would. Finding Neville among the people he smiled, "Hey Neville. Hope you don't mind but Ron insisted on coming when I told him."

"Hey, Harry. That's great! The more the merrier."

Well, not really, Neville thought. The place was a bit crowded, and he didn't have Charlie here to lurk at the bar or in a corner with.

But Harry and Ron were good to be with.

"Sorry, moping. I'll buck up."

Ron managed to look both sheepish and hungry at the same time, as memories of that dinner came flooding back. Realizing he had to make this up to Harry somehow, he gave Harry his best smile and wrapped a hand around his neck to tug him up into a quick, fierce kiss. "It very definitely counted," he said reassuringly. "But I didn't eat as much of it as I wanted because I was too busy trying not to ravish you on the kitchen table." There, that ought to soothe some feathers he thought.

Ron snickered when Harry went on about Charlie's cooking, knowing that he and his older brother had that in common. He hoped that Neville wasn't going to be too disappointed though, and out of some sort of brotherly loyalty said, "We Weasleys have prefected the art of ordering take-away and still managing a romantic dinner, so I don't think you have anything to be worried about Nev."

Neville averted his eyes, there were some things he didn't need to see, even if he had to admit Harry and Ron were good for each other, and good together.

"Not worried. I just mentioned I hadn't had a cheese toasty since I was in nappy's and he offered to make one for me one night." If he ever got back, a worrying voice in the back of Neville's mind said.

"And it's okay if he can't cook, I can. That's how you and Ron work it, right?"

Lavender...
[info]cc_lavender
2009-03-26 08:13 pm UTC (link)
She had a rare day off - something about the weather possibly getting bad later in the day, no that she believed it. People were always worried about the weather getting bad, but it never did. Though rather than voice that little doubt, Lavender decided to enjoy the day off.

It had been a while since she'd gotten any new books, and she was running rather low on new reading material. So a trip to the book shop was in order. She wrapped a scarf around her neck and pulled on a coat before heading out - it was a bit cold today, but that wasn't unusual this time of year.

Obscurus was a bit busy today, probably several people had the day off due to the highly unlikely bad weather that was supposed to be coming later that day. She ducked her head letting her hair fall down around her face while she started browsing the book shelves.

Dean walked into Obscurus Books and felt immediately at home, as he always did. His paint splattered jeans and ripped t-shirt weren't out of place here, and he hung his heavy peacoat on the rack provided and headed directly to the cafe. He needed coffee and art books, in that order. He was a regular, so Logan asked after his latest paintings and Marigold came over to give him a grandmotherly hug, and then shooed him into the dark corner that housed the art books--big volumes of Picasso, Van Gogh, Rembrandt, glossy pages filled with color, shapes and inspiration.

He'd picked out several books to page through while drinking his coffee when he saw Lavender walk in, scarf wrapped around her neck. Grinning he set aside the books and decided that human inspiration was more in line with his newest series of paintings. "Darling, you are more gorgeous every time I see you," he whispered into her ear as he came up behind her. "When are you going to run away with me to Greece, and let me paint you under the sun with the ocean at our backs?"

Coat off and laid over her arm, Lavender might have been on her way to the romance section of the book shop when Dean caught her, not that she would have told him that. She tensed for half a second before she smiled smiled when she recognized his familiar voice behind her, turning slowly to look up at him.

"I bet you say that to all the girls," She teased. "Always wanted to go to Greece though, you keep up with those compliments and one day I might take you up on it." She told him smiling.

Dean nodded emphatically in agreement with Seamus. "That's right Ron, only Shameless calls me Deanie Beanie and only I get to call him Leprechaun. It's our thing," he said, grinning widely. For some reason all of the Gryffindors in their year had an unspoken agreement that taking the piss out of Ron Weasley was an almost holy past time. It was definitely a very fun one, Dean thought.

He grinned at Neville and reached out to shove him on the shoulder, more gently than he would have Seamus or Ron because Dean had a Thing about people smaller than him, in that they were to be protected. His sisters had beat him up more than once for this very Thing, but it couldn't be changed at this late age.

"So, Longbottom, you've been back, what? A month now and haven't owled me? I'm hurt right down to my very soul," he said, pouting at Neville. "And I had to hear from Shameless about you and Charlie, just like I had to hear from him about Harry and Ron. One would think I'm not in the gossip loop anymore." He sniffled as if this made him very sad.

Neville mused at how things had changed. Once upon a time he would have felt a small thrill go through him at Dean touching him, but since Charlie, or maybe even before, that had gone away.

But he was still one of his best mates which meant they could give each other a hard time, stictly in the name of fun of course.

Making puppy dog eyes, and Neville knew he was better at that then Ron could ever hope to be, he protested: "Oi. Just gang up me everyone, even though you know I have a bad memory. Are you sure you haven't been talking to Gran." Snickering, he smiled, "uh huh, we all know that all you have to do to be in the gossip loop is know Seamus or Harry, so it's not like you've ever been out of it.

But, yes, he had been remiss, and he should make up for it. "Tell you what, to get back in your good graces you can come over for dinner sometime. I make pretty good Italian food."

Linden. . .
[info]cc_linden
2009-03-27 06:44 am UTC (link)
Linden had nothing to do for the evening. Not that it was surprising, really, but he'd been left to his own devices with an empty apartment. Silently cursing himself for not buying more books the last time he'd gone to the bookstore, he looked outside. Ugh. Tonight was going to be nasty, so it was best to stay in, right? But he'd read all those books before. . .

Well, perhaps a quick trip to the bookstore would be okay. Zeke and Snookums had been fed, and Zeke had gone out, so it wasn't like they'd need Linden for the next couple of hours. But he wouldn't be that long, even.

There was a small part of Linden that felt guilty for not sending an owl to Terry to talk about that last book. But, well, he figured Terry probably wouldn't have noticed. So it wouldn't matter if he happened to bump into him at the store, right? He wouldn't remember, Linden kept assuring himself, trying not to feel awkward about not keeping the promise.

A few minutes later, Linden was in front of the bookstore. Only there were so many people there! It was as if a carnival had dropped itself right into the shop. Linden didn't particularly like crowds, but this might just make it easier to slip in and out with some good books and be back on his way in a hurry. Shoving his hand in his pocket, Linden opened the door with his free hand and wandered over to the new releases again.

A gryff reunion was fun, even got his mind off of Charlie for a bit, but there was only so much he could take of even being part of even a semi-large group before he started to feel claustrophic.

So he politely excused himself, for just a moment, and decided to wander in search of something different to read. And it would only be right to give them business.

But Merlin!, he had no idea what was good. He usually just stuck to mystery novels.

"Um, sorry to bother you and you can tell me to shut it or go away, doubt you work here. But any idea what would be good to read. That's not a mystery novel?" He really needed to branch out a bit

Well, Linden, who was normally awkward, was plenty happy to be by himself. Now, however, there was a bloke asking is advice on books, and normally this would send Linden into a wave of blushing and stammering. However, perhaps it was the bloke's tone that calmed Linden's normal nervousness? No matter. He didn't really care what caused it. He was just glad to not be acting like a buffoon for a change.

"Oh, well, that depends on what you like to read," Linden answered, the nerdy bookworm within coming out full throttle. "I just read that one," he continued, pointing to Letters from a Moravian Witch. "It was quite good. Historical fiction," Linden explained. Linden loved historical fiction.

The Storm: Reply here for all interactions taking place after the Wireless Report at 8pm

The wireless clicked off, leaving the group gathered in silence. It seemed as if Diagon Alley was experiencing a rare blizzard. The Minister had asked that the Floo system be kept clear for emergencies, and people were encouraged to stay where they were for the night, as reports of heating and lighting charm failures had been coming in at a steady rate. Gareth had risked an owl to the Wireless offices, offering shelter to anyone who could make it in, and a steady trickle of people had already taken him up on the offer.

Gareth took the stage and turned on the mike. He wasn't one of speeches and made short work of offering food, water and a place to sleep to anyone who didn't want to brave the weather and take their chances of warmth at home. "It's safe here for the moment, so we're more than happy to offer shelter for the night, or however long this storm goes on. We can Transfigure cots and sleeping bags, and there's enough provisions in the cafe for a good week or more at the number of people we have. The store has a back-up generator spell, so we'll have heat and lighting charms for a few days at the least." There were murmurs in the crowd, though Gareth could see that most agreed, and stepped off the stage to see what else there was to do.

Winter was Cho's favorite season. She liked the cold. She liked ice. She didn't like slush - that was the only thing about winter she disliked - but other than that winter was clearly the best of the seasons. It was pure and pristine, stiff and unforgiving. She loved the stiffness of the crisp air outside when it snowed.

Except, that was, when heating and lighting charms failed to take effect indoors.

"Merlin's bloody tears," she muttered under her breath as she lowered her wand for the fifth time since the heat had simply stopped working. Goosebumps were already rising on her arms. Cho tossed her spellbook (The Idiot's Guide to Everyday Charms; Simple Spells to Help You Get Through the Day) away from her. It thumped loudly against the armrest of her sofa before landing limply, spine-up on the ground. What to do now? She wasn't going to stay in here, hovering around a candle. That was unbearably...pathetic-sounding.

The Wireless had broadcasted several places that were available for temporary shelter and warmth. Cho threw a desolate look at her cold, dark walls. She hated sleeping anywhere except her own bed. But spending a sleepless night with a couple other magicians seemed at least marginally better to her than huddling here alone. In the cold. Tossing her hair, she raised her wand reluctantly once more.

To Obscurus Books it was. With a tiny pop, Cho appeared just inside the doorway of the store.

Dean meets Cho

Dean hadn't meant to stay at Obscurus forever, but as the snow kept coming down and more and more people arrived, he realized that the likely hood of his studio flat being heated was very small, staying at the bookstore seemed to be the best option.

Leaving Lavender to scout them out a place to sleep, Dean went in search of food. There was plenty, spread out buffet style on a transfigured table. The bookstore staff had been surprisingly quick to organize, and it kept everything moving clearly. He'd gathered enough for the evening and was heading back to Lavender when he spotted her in the doorway.

It was as if time stopped, and all that existed was her. Her hair was long and dark, shining in the dim interior light. He couldn't tell from here but he was certain her skin was flawless, and he found himself moving in her direction without actual awareness of the fact until he was staring dumbly at her from close up.

She was even more perfect close up, and he knew what he had to do.

"Hi," he breathed out, eyes wide and slightly unfocused as he imagined what colors he'd use--the blackest black and palest yellow, reds and blues and greens. He blinked and came back to himself suddenly, and realized he must look like a complete arse, standing here staring at her like he was. "Er...sorry." He knew he was blushing and was glad that his dark skin dulled the red somewhat. "It's Cho right? Cho Chang?"

(OOC: Hahaha, love Dean! <3)

At first she didn't recognize him at all. And it wasn't her fault; except for various House Quidditch games, they'd really only known each other briefly through Dumbledore's Ar - through the DA - a long, long time ago. And besides, Cho was more preoccupied in the first five seconds with the way his eyes seemed to be transfixed to her face. Knowing why he was staring at her seemed more of initial importance than knowing who he was. Really, did she have some kind disfiguring wart on her cheek?

"Um, yes." Cho took a closer look at her new companion, attempting to scrutinize his features without being too obvious about her cluelessness. She began to mentally rifle through a list of people who could possibly know her name. "And you are...?"

A millisecond later it struck. Oh...! But what was his name...Finnigan? No, that was wrong. Finnigan was the other one. This guy was... "Thomas!" Cho cheeks flushed slightly as she smiled with a little ruefulness. "Sorry - Dean Thomas, right?" Now she remembered. "You were a Gryffindor, Harry's friend?" The names felt odd on her tongue, as if she hadn't spoken them in a while. Funny how they used to be part of her everyday vocabulary.

Enough was enough. Looking at snow was one thing, it was breathtaking, but it was literally breathtaking when the heat stopped working and thus his asthma flaired up.

He knew he should have taken a smaller flat, like Lee's, it be easier to keep warm.

Debating for a moment about Lee and deciding against it, as it was one thing to want Lee to take care of him, it was another to risk Lee feeling like a nursemaid, Dennis decided the bookstore was the best option.

Feeling weak and like his chest was going to collapse, he managed to gather Nicholas and his things, along with his own inhaler and beta blocker and shrunk them all, then apparated to the store.

Shivering he made his way to the puppy pen and placed Nicholas inside then looked around to see what he needed to do next.

Ron left Harry to see after Sammy while he scouted out a place for them to sleep. They'd decided to not even risk Apparating home, and along with the majority of their friends and the rest of the customers at Obscurus chose to stay the night where they were. It was the safest option for all concerned, though Ron had managed to send in a Floo call to the Auror office to let them know where he was if there was an emergency he was needed for.

He'd just found a rather comfortable area that would be good for him and Harry and whoever else would like to join them, when he saw Dennis Creevey--at least he was almost certain it was Dennis. He hadn't had a chance to re-meet him yet, but he'd seen him around and about anyway--Apparate in, looking cold and lost and scared.

Never one to be able to look away from someone in trouble, Ron made his way over and tried to keep a reassuring smile on his face. "Dennis?" he said softly, using his Auror voice usually reserved for frightened witnesses. "Are you all right? You're looking sort of peaked." And okay, maybe his bedside manner wasn't the best, but he was trying right? "And remember me? It's Ron Weasley. Come on, you look half frozen. There's a fire over this way."
