RP: Obscurus Books Presents
Date: 26 March 2003 (through early Thursday morning likely)
Characters: Everyone who'd like to come, plus various NPCs! Children Welcome! Add your tags!
Location: Obscurus Books & Cafe
Private/Public: Public as public can be!
Warnings: PG to start, if things get kinky, please use the subject line of the first comment to rate appropriately!
Summary: Just another day at Obscurus Books, until the storm hits and traps people inside.

Gareth looked around the bookshop with pride. Children were sitting enthralled by Marigold and her husband as they performed flashy magic tricks. Logan was hosting a small cooking class, teaching everyone from housewives to retired Unspeakables (though Gareth though it was highly unlikely that there were actually such a thing as retired Unspeakables) how to bake enchiladas. His Maddie was graciously signing copies of her latest best-seller Emerald Isle, and open mike poetry night would start in a half hour, followed by a rousing karaoke contest. All in all, Thursday was shaping up to be a wonderful, and profitable, night for Obscurus Books.

The Storm: Reply here for all interactions taking place after the Wireless Report at 8pm
[info]cc_boots
2009-03-26 06:18 pm UTC (link)
The wireless clicked off, leaving the group gathered in silence. It seemed as if Diagon Alley was experiencing a rare blizzard. The Minister had asked that the Floo system be kept clear for emergencies, and people were encouraged to stay where they were for the night, as reports of heating and lighting charm failures had been coming in at a steady rate. Gareth had risked an owl to the Wireless offices, offering shelter to anyone who could make it in, and a steady trickle of people had already taken him up on the offer.

Gareth took the stage and turned on the mike. He wasn't one of speeches and made short work of offering food, water and a place to sleep to anyone who didn't want to brave the weather and take their chances of warmth at home. "It's safe here for the moment, so we're more than happy to offer shelter for the night, or however long this storm goes on. We can Transfigure cots and sleeping bags, and there's enough provisions in the cafe for a good week or more at the number of people we have. The store has a back-up generator spell, so we'll have heat and lighting charms for a few days at the least." There were murmurs in the crowd, though Gareth could see that most agreed, and stepped off the stage to see what else there was to do.

Winter was Cho's favorite season. She liked the cold. She liked ice. She didn't like slush - that was the only thing about winter she disliked - but other than that winter was clearly the best of the seasons. It was pure and pristine, stiff and unforgiving. She loved the stiffness of the crisp air outside when it snowed.

Except, that was, when heating and lighting charms failed to take effect indoors.

"Merlin's bloody tears," she muttered under her breath as she lowered her wand for the fifth time since the heat had simply stopped working. Goosebumps were already rising on her arms. Cho tossed her spellbook (The Idiot's Guide to Everyday Charms; Simple Spells to Help You Get Through the Day) away from her. It thumped loudly against the armrest of her sofa before landing limply, spine-up on the ground. What to do now? She wasn't going to stay in here, hovering around a candle. That was unbearably...pathetic-sounding.

The Wireless had broadcasted several places that were available for temporary shelter and warmth. Cho threw a desolate look at her cold, dark walls. She hated sleeping anywhere except her own bed. But spending a sleepless night with a couple other magicians seemed at least marginally better to her than huddling here alone. In the cold. Tossing her hair, she raised her wand reluctantly once more.

To Obscurus Books it was. With a tiny pop, Cho appeared just inside the doorway of the store.

Dean meets Cho
[info]cc_dean
2009-03-26 11:25 pm UTC (link)
Dean hadn't meant to stay at Obscurus forever, but as the snow kept coming down and more and more people arrived, he realized that the likely hood of his studio flat being heated was very small, staying at the bookstore seemed to be the best option.

Leaving Lavender to scout them out a place to sleep, Dean went in search of food. There was plenty, spread out buffet style on a transfigured table. The bookstore staff had been surprisingly quick to organize, and it kept everything moving clearly. He'd gathered enough for the evening and was heading back to Lavender when he spotted her in the doorway.

It was as if time stopped, and all that existed was her. Her hair was long and dark, shining in the dim interior light. He couldn't tell from here but he was certain her skin was flawless, and he found himself moving in her direction without actual awareness of the fact until he was staring dumbly at her from close up.

She was even more perfect close up, and he knew what he had to do.

"Hi," he breathed out, eyes wide and slightly unfocused as he imagined what colors he'd use--the blackest black and palest yellow, reds and blues and greens. He blinked and came back to himself suddenly, and realized he must look like a complete arse, standing here staring at her like he was. "Er...sorry." He knew he was blushing and was glad that his dark skin dulled the red somewhat. "It's Cho right? Cho Chang?"

(OOC: Hahaha, love Dean! <3)

At first she didn't recognize him at all. And it wasn't her fault; except for various House Quidditch games, they'd really only known each other briefly through Dumbledore's Ar - through the DA - a long, long time ago. And besides, Cho was more preoccupied in the first five seconds with the way his eyes seemed to be transfixed to her face. Knowing why he was staring at her seemed more of initial importance than knowing who he was. Really, did she have some kind disfiguring wart on her cheek?

"Um, yes." Cho took a closer look at her new companion, attempting to scrutinize his features without being too obvious about her cluelessness. She began to mentally rifle through a list of people who could possibly know her name. "And you are...?"

A millisecond later it struck. Oh...! But what was his name...Finnigan? No, that was wrong. Finnigan was the other one. This guy was... "Thomas!" Cho cheeks flushed slightly as she smiled with a little ruefulness. "Sorry - Dean Thomas, right?" Now she remembered. "You were a Gryffindor, Harry's friend?" The names felt odd on her tongue, as if she hadn't spoken them in a while. Funny how they used to be part of her everyday vocabulary.

Dean was glad when it took Cho a few moments to respond, it gave him time to check the impulse to reach out to stroke her hair. Normal people didn't walk up to girls--even or maybe especially very pretty girls--and touch their hair to check the texture and weight of it against their hands to decide which medium would come closest to recreating it on canvas. Oils, he thought absently, with the Chinese brushes his mother had given him for Christmas.

"Yeah, I'm Dean," he said finally, once he realized she'd stopped speaking and normal, non-trancelike people would jump back into the conversation at this point. "It's good to see you again." Can I paint you went unspoken. For now anyway. "Um, the storm's getting wild, isn't it?" It was probably an odd thing to mention, but the snow was whirling madly outside the window at Cho's back, and suddenly Dean could see it laid out in front of him; swirls of black and red and white cut across the canvas, just barely the shape of a woman in a storm and he had to blink it away before she thought he was completely insane. "Plenty of room here though, at least at the moment."

"Right." Cho glanced around. "I wasn't planning on coming. Just...my flat lost its heat, you know, and I thought, this place would at least be heated." She offered him a warm, polite smile. "Are you here for the same reason?" She wanted to ask why he'd decided to come talk to her, but she also sensed it would be somewhat jarring to the flow of their conversation. Especially seeing as they'd only exchanged three sentences a total of three sentences so far. Cho was never one to insinuate awkwardness. She'd save her question for the next five minutes, when they'd started talking a little more.

Maybe Dean was just jolted into speaking to her because he'd known (extremely vaguely) from the old days. Cho felt a faint prickle curiosity. She hadn't seen anyone from Hogwarts except her Ravenclaw friends for almost two years. Would she would run into someone else she used to know here? It'd be nice, maybe, to see a familiar face.

Dean nodded, glad that the longer they talked the less apt he was to continue to make an arse of himself. The vision had faded for now, though he knew it was only temporary. Once a subject had grabbed his attention it didn't let go until he'd seen it through to completion.

"Yeah, my flat's heat was out as well," he said. "But I was here earlier with some mates. When the storm started I went home and found out I had no heat and decided to come back here for the night. Made more sense than freezing myself."

He looked out at the snow and grinned wryly. "I've never seen snow like this in London and I've lived here all my life, except for Hogwarts of course."

...Hogwarts. Cho recalled the pearl blankets that piled up on windows and the school grounds, endless fields of sparkling white under wide gray skies. "Neither have I," she agreed. "The blizzard is wrecking everyone's plans. I wonder how they used to get on at Hogwarts when this sort of thing happened." You would think that such a huge castle would be even more problematic when it came to snow storms and heating charms. "Although," Cho added as an afterthought, "I suppose a blizzard would be a trivial there. I think when we were there Hogwarts faced so many other problems."

Cho stepped forward away from the raging weather outside. "So what have you done since you graduated?" She didn't remember seeing him around since that final battle.

Dean nodded, and looked back at her. He'd done a good job of pushing back the art vision for now, and thought he could actually carry a conversation like a normal human. Or as close to a normal human as he ever got anyway. "That is something of an understatement," Dean agreed. "Though I think the House Elves had a lot to do with why we didn't notice blizzards so much. Here in the real world there's no House Elves to keep things running, unless you own one or two anyway." While Dean wasn't exactly a fan of owning House Elves, he did realize that they were extremely useful in situations like these.

"Oh, well, I'm an artist," he said, feeling that same sort of pride and relief he got every time someone asked him what his occupation was. Though sometimes he felt like saying that art wasn't an occupation so much as it was as necessary to him as breathing. He was very glad he'd never had to find out what it would be like to not be able to pursue his art. "Abstract paintings mostly, though I've been known to sketch a few portraits and play with clay, as my mate Seamus likes to put it, in my time. How about you?"

"An artist, really?" Cho cast him an surprised look. "You didn't go into magic?" It was odd, she thought, that anyone who was a wizard wouldn't do something where he could perform using his magical talents. She almost felt like it was a waste. Almost.

Then again, the only things Cho knew about paintings and art came from the single trip to the Louvre that she'd taken with her Aunt almost six years ago, when they'd visited France over the summer. Everything there had been created by Muggles. But she had to admit the pieces had been...well, beautiful.

"I'm a teacher at the primary school. Just down the road from here." Cho slipped a hand into the pocket of her robe and wrapped two fingers lightly around the handle of her wand, toying with it.

Enough was enough. Looking at snow was one thing, it was breathtaking, but it was literally breathtaking when the heat stopped working and thus his asthma flaired up.

He knew he should have taken a smaller flat, like Lee's, it be easier to keep warm.

Debating for a moment about Lee and deciding against it, as it was one thing to want Lee to take care of him, it was another to risk Lee feeling like a nursemaid, Dennis decided the bookstore was the best option.

Feeling weak and like his chest was going to collapse, he managed to gather Nicholas and his things, along with his own inhaler and beta blocker and shrunk them all, then apparated to the store.

Shivering he made his way to the puppy pen and placed Nicholas inside then looked around to see what he needed to do next.

Ron left Harry to see after Sammy while he scouted out a place for them to sleep. They'd decided to not even risk Apparating home, and along with the majority of their friends and the rest of the customers at Obscurus chose to stay the night where they were. It was the safest option for all concerned, though Ron had managed to send in a Floo call to the Auror office to let them know where he was if there was an emergency he was needed for.

He'd just found a rather comfortable area that would be good for him and Harry and whoever else would like to join them, when he saw Dennis Creevey--at least he was almost certain it was Dennis. He hadn't had a chance to re-meet him yet, but he'd seen him around and about anyway--Apparate in, looking cold and lost and scared.

Never one to be able to look away from someone in trouble, Ron made his way over and tried to keep a reassuring smile on his face. "Dennis?" he said softly, using his Auror voice usually reserved for frightened witnesses. "Are you all right? You're looking sort of peaked." And okay, maybe his bedside manner wasn't the best, but he was trying right? "And remember me? It's Ron Weasley. Come on, you look half frozen. There's a fire over this way."

Dennis looked around, Ron Weasley!

"Yeah, I'm fine", okay, that came out more on a wheeze than a breath, so.."okay, not fine, but will be. Asthma, but it will get better now someplace warm."

Dennis followed Ron and dug out his beta blocker and took a dose as he did so. No point in being shy about it at this point. "Thanks. I'll be alright in a bit. Flat was just cold."

He cast a glance back to make sure Nicholas was fine but from what he could see his dog was playing and didn't seem to miss him.

Ron was still a bit skeptical about Dennis' health, but he made himself stop fussing and remember that Dennis was an adult. Very much an adult the back part of his brain provided him, but he pushed the sneaky little voice away and only had to glance over towards Harry to feel his heart expand and remember why that little voice had no hold over him anymore.

He nodded along when Dennis said that his flat had been cold, and he wasn't Molly Weasley's son for nothing. "Well, come with me and we'll get you warm and fed," he said cheerfully, not giving Dennis any other option. "There are thick roast beef sandwiches and hot chocolate or coffee available, free of charge. The Boots, I guess they own the place, have offered up the food and shelter bit, so don't worry about cost or anything."

He took a breathe and it was better, a little, and would be much moreso once he'd gotten warm.

"The Boots? Like Terry Boot from the DA?"

And Dennis had to admit his mouth was watering from the prospect of food, and he told himself that it had nothing to do with a fit Ron Weasley being nice to him. But, Ron wasn't Lee either, so... What had Lee told him?

"Is Harry here? Think Lee told me that you two were.." and he shut up..the nosy Dennis belonged in the past.

Ron nodded at Dennis' question. "Yes, that Terry Boot," he said. "I guess his parents own this place, or something. Pretty sure it's not him who owns it since he works at the Ministry."

He raised his eyebrows when Dennis mentioned Lee, and then smirked. So that's how it was. He made a note to tease Lee about this current development the next time he saw him. He realized that Dennis had asked a question and went on to answer it. "Yes, Harry's here, and yes we're dating. He went to check on our puppy Sammy and find us a place to set down for the night. You're welcome to join us, if you'd like."

He was sure that Harry wouldn't mind the offer, as it was very much impossible for them to do anything too adult rated in a store filled with people and children. He wrapped a companionable arm around Dennis shoulders, though it was a sort of awkward motion with Dennis being so much shorter than he was, and started heading through the crowd towards Harry's direction.

"Oh. He was in Ravenclaw, wasn't he?" Dennis was almost postive about that. "So he probably does something brilliant at the Ministry."

Dennis grinned. "You have a puppy? Me too. Not really a puppy, I guess, he's 9 months old, but I have a dog. Nicholas." Then it hit. "You and Harry? So Lee was right? That's brilliant. Best friends and all." And it was. Yeah, Dennis could acknowledge that Ron was fit, and more...but him and Harry would be cute together.

"That'd be great. Haven't met anyone from Gryff or school cept Lee and Hermione. Had dinner with her one night, that's when she told me we lived in the same building. Oh and ran into Seamus and George too." So he guessed he had met other people but Ron and Harry...they were nice and normal even though they could have been snotty because of how brilliant they were at Quidditch and stuff. That made them even more admirable to Dennis

Ron snickered at the brilliant comment and said, "Mostly I've heard his job involves complete cock ups of spells and turning men into women and women into men." Which, he though, in hindsight really had been ridiculously hilarious. There were still pictures of Williamson being pinned up everyday, even though the man himself had threatened everyone with evisceration if it continued. That hadn't stopped Ron from pinning them up though.

Ron smiled as Dennis babbled on and on, finding it endearing in a little brother sort of way. "Yeah, Sammy's a puppy. Not sure how old he is. Harry gave him to me for my birthday this month," he said with a rather sappy smile. "Hermione's in Paris right now, giving a speech on the international exploitation of house elves or something like that, or else she'd be here tonight as well."

He spotted Harry through the crowd and led Dennis over. "Oi, Harry, look what I picked up," he said as if Dennis were some sort of stray animal.

When Harry and Ron had split up Harry went over to the puppy pen and found Sammy curled up by himself in a corner sleeping. Internally awwing at the puppy Harry saw Wally was nearby and felt better. As he neared Sammy he saw Sammy lift his head and bark excitedly when he saw Harry. Trotting over to him Harry picked Sammy up and was rewarded with a few face licks. "Tired puppy?" Harry asked him softly as he scratched his ears.

Putting Sammy's leash back on his collar Harry decided to keep Sammy with them for a bit and left the puppy pen still holding Sammy. Smiling when he heard Ron's voice he chuckled. "Thought you were supposed to be done picking people up." Harry teased him as Sammy wriggled in his arms upon seeing Ron.

"Dennis right?" Harry asked, pretty sure he was remembering correctly. "This is Sammy." He said introducing the happy puppy.

"A healer and a week on a beach in Bermuda?" Dennis shook his head. "No, I'll be okay, just it was cold in the flat. Should have left earlier, sudden cold brings it on." Dennis took a breathe and was pretty sure that if it was going to be okay. "Would have thought falling into the lake that first year would have caused one. But didn't"

"Never did figure out why?"

He looked at the two of them, considering something he'd never thought of before.

"D'ya think Healers have potions for asthma that might work better than this?

He'd deal with that after the storm. "Sorry, know I'm being nosy like in school, but what do you do now?"

Harry chuckled softly when Dennis called them a cute couple. His smile grew a bit wider when Ron continued to hold him. He could hear the worry in Ron's voice though when he asked after Dennis.

Harry was worriede too to be honest. "I'm not sure." Harry told him. "Don't know anyone else with asthma. Could probably ask a healer at Saint Mungos though." Feeling bad for Dennis Harry leaned away from Ron and grabbed a blanket he had found, "Come sit with us under the blanket and warm up." Harry told him. "Ron works great as a heater." "I will, once this lets up, storm I mean." It was pretty, with the snow falling. As long as he could watch it from someplace warm.

"Is it the redhair?" He joked. But he was happy to take the offer, he was tired too. And it was nice, he thought of Harry and Ron to do this.

"Thanks, it's nice. Warmer", he was getting sleepy all of the sudden, for sure the other sandwich would go uneaten. "Like when Colin and I stayed up talking and fell asleep." And that thought should have made him sad, or feel guilty. But somehow Dennis thought Colin would approve.

Ron didn't mind being used as a space heater, not even by someone he'd just met again. He wrapped an arm around Harry and Dennis both, and tried very hard to keep his hand from twitching in the direction of the left over sandwich. His mother would brain him wiht a frying pan if she ever found out he took food from someone without being invited to first. He didn't count Harry in that though, because they shared everything.

He blinked at the mention of Colin, having forgotten--or not wanting to remember--that Dennis' brother was dead. He still felt sick and shaky when he remembered that day, remebered seeing so many of their friends--and Fred--lying dead in the Great Hall. And Colin had been one of them. He tightened his arm around Harry, knowing what his lover must be feeling and summoned a smile.

"Well, we can definitely do that. Not sure how it will be to sleep with so many people here, so we can definitely do the talking bit for awhile," he said.

"Good plan," Harry told Dennis with an encouraging smile. "It might be." Harry said with a chuckle. "He's got a fiery temper at times at least." Harry leaned up slightly to peck Ron's cheek to let him know he was just teasing.

Harry brushed Dennis' hair out of his face when he began to look sleepy. His own smile faltering a bit when Dennis mentioned Colin. Ron's arm tightening around him made him feel a bit better though.

"Will be weird to sleep with so many around." Harry agreed, wondering if he would even be able to get some sleep. "Ron will talk your ear off for hours." Harry told Dennis, "If he gets quiet look up, he probably stole your sandwich."

That felt nice, reminded him of his Mum, and Colin: playing 'I draw 5 snakes' till they fell asleep.

"Oh, I don't know. Done it before at my house. Not this many people but a lot. Gypsies."

He leaned over and smiled at Ron. "Doya want the other sandwich, I can't eat it?"
