Once Connor had sounded the alarm everything had been pure chaos as everyone scrambled to figure out what to do and how to survive all that was coming at them. The Holy Water reserves that Lois had been working on since starting that project were gone within the first hour and she prayed that she had done the incantation correctly on each bottle that was taken. The last thing anyone needed was to be using it to protect themselves and have it fail at the last moment. Lois didn’t think she would ever forgive herself if that happened.
Dwelling on what could happen wasn’t a game she wanted to play and she had focused on continuing to make more water, ignoring the exhaustion that wanted to pull her back to sleep or the pain radiating from her shoulder down to her side as she kept pushing to work. There were already two dead that she knew of and that was before the attack on the complex had started. Lois could be logical, she knew there would be more deaths. With this kind of attack there was really no way around it. Not without the powers that so many were used to relying on to protect the building that so many called home.
And that was what scared Lois the most.
Without their powers she knew Clark and Kon were extra vulnerable. They were too used to relying on their speed, their strength, their invulnerability. There was a very real chance that the two of them could die and Lois didn’t know what she would do if she lost either of them. Families were often torn apart during wars and while it had been so easy to forget that they were in the middle of one for a few months, with the recent turn of events there was no denying that this was a war. Somewhere along the way in the craziness of living in Lawrence the three of them had become a family, that much she’d figured out after her own time in the hospital, and she couldn’t lose anymore family. She couldn’t lose them. She wouldn’t.
Lois thought she heard voices in the hallway and pushed herself away from the counter to open the door to see if she could learn anything about what was happening on the lower levels. Unfortunately what greeted her was not a fellow resident but a tall, emaciated creature that was heading toward where she knew Svetlana and the kids were all staying.
Looking back Lois would agree that what she did next was definitely not the brightest idea in her life, but injured or not like hell she was going to let some kids get hurt or killed. “Hey!” she called out, chucking a bottle of Holy Water at the monster.
The sharp teeth and piercing red eyes that turned toward her had her rethinking her barely thought out plan and scrambling to slam the door closed so she could try and remember what the hell the creature was and how in the world she was supposed to kill it.
