Who:Dick and Darcy
What:And now for something completely different-clothes shopping?
When: Saturday
Where:Her place and then a mall or something
Warnings: TBA but I'm guessing nothing high

Well this was going to be interesting. He'd never really gone shopping for himself, much less with a woman for clothes. Not since he was a little kid anyway with his mother, but he was looking forward to it. Darcy had been a good friend to him since he'd arrived and he liked seeing her when he could-which wasn't a whole lot lately. He failed in the friend department during the Joker fiasco and post with Bruce's arrival and his mental panic. Things were finally starting to go back to normal at least as normal as they could be anyway for him. His frame of mind was settling down and no longer anywhere near as chaotic as it had been the past week after watching the Joker get gunned down.

He knew the Joker deserved it, hell a lot of their big bads did. If they killed every single one of them though where would that leave them? Wherever it left them Dick really didn't want to dwell on it anymore. Bruce was in Kansas now and refusing to kill, whether or not that was a good thing was still foggy given the impending apocalypse but it meant Dick had a stabilizer. A rock of sorts and he desperately needed that. He was a grown man now, but even back home when he was off on his own adventures with his own various teams just knowing Batman was around made him feel better. Kansas was no different.

For the first time since his arrival it felt like things would work out and he could stop forcing them. He didn't have to be on autopilot 24/7, he could actually be himself and it was nice. For a while he'd almost forgotten who Dick Grayson was and had become Nightwing. He needed that balance or he would lose himself, he knew it and he knew now to be much more careful then he had been about finding it. Getting out during the day with Darcy was a good step. It was odd being out in the sunlight, but it was good. He waited for her outside the complex, leaning against the guard rails and looking up at the sky. Sunlight, so it wasn't actually a myth. Who knew?

A couple of days ago, everything seemed to blow up in Darcy's face. She'd been mourning the disappearance of Clark Kent and suddenly she had been faced with a bigger distraction she could ever have imagined. Her children were grown and they were here. They'd been dating or wanted to be, they had their own personalities and they were so much more clearly different people than she'd so far been able to pinpoint in their younger selves. She felt badly not noticing that Dick had gone, but since he was back, she was glad to see him. Part of her wondered if she was using Dick to fill the void that Clark had left, but in a different way. She needed someone to take care of her, even if she wasn't ever willing to admit it and Dick promised he'd look out for her and the boys. He was a good friend. It took a conscious effort for her not to project any feelings deeper than that onto him, because it wasn't fair to either of them for her to try to, but all the same, and that not withstanding, she enjoyed having time around him. So, when Dick agreed to let her take him shopping, she'd jumped at the chance.

It had always been one of Darcy's favorite things, taking Dexter shopping; picking out his clothes and seeing her own fashion sense plastered across her fiancĂ© like a billboard. Marcus hadn't wanted any part of it, during the short stint that they had been together after Dex had called off the wedding to go off with Rachel and Ethan had only let her do it for special occassions or important meetings with his publisher. The chance to finally shop for a guy again — a guy who didn't still wear Pull-Ups or think ripped jeans were the only way to go — was exciting.

Having decided it would be easier just to pack up the boys to come along since she was already attempting to recruit Ben to watch them so she could take the older twins for a birthday dinner, Darcy got the two of them bathed and dressed and then, the three of them headed down to the lobby to meet Dick. Darcy already had a game plan for the day. This was going to be so much fun.

Twins in tow, Darcy squinted just slightly against the sunlight and pushed the complex doors open. Spotting Dick almost immediately, she smiled. "Hey. Hope bringing them along is okay?" she asked, nodding down at the kids. "You ready?"

Dick had pointedly not told anyone he was going out of town. He really needed that time off just to clear his head. He didn't mind not being noticed in the least, actually preferred it. He was better for it too. The look on his face was much less stressed then it had been days before. When darcy came out with the kids he looked down at them and raised an eyebrow. "If it's okay with you it's cool with me." He wasn't very good with little kids, but he was getting better. Hanging around Svetlana and her kids was causing him to be a lot more at ease with them. That and he was just naturally charismatic, he had always had the ability to draw people to him. Seemed even in the land of Apocalypses nothing had changed. Save for a clash or two with Sam Winchester he was generally getting along with everyone.

That was how he liked it. He wanted to have friends, a social life, all the things he didn't get to have when being Bruce's partner. In a way it was nice being able to talk to people, though in the back of his mind he worried that he was going to get them all killed if he got closer. That was just how being Nightwing worked, people he loved died.

His own fashion sense was usually pretty good, he was young and had the body of a an athlete in their prime physical state since he pushed himself to insane workouts. He could basically get away with wearing anything and still making it look decent but he was more casual. He was wearing just a pair of jeans and a black shirt. He found that he did tend to lean toward the darker colors thanks to his night time habits.

"Thanks again for doing this." Rubbing the back of his neck sheepishly he gave her a lopsided grin.

Shrugging a little sheepishly, Darcy smiled apologetically. "The nanny never showed up to start work on Wednesday and with all the crazy going on, I just assumed he'd been sent back and I'm out a sitter again..." she sighed. "They're pretty well behaved. ...mostly," she said, looking down at Clark and giving his tiny hand a little squeeze. "Right?" she asked suggestively.

Clark smirked up at Dick. "He not Superman," he muttered, wrinkling his nose.

"Or Kon," Conner added before shrinking against his mother, as though surprised at the fact that he'd even spoken at all.

"No, he's not. He can still come to the mall with us," she told them and looked back at Dick, blushing. "Clark and Kon used to mostly take us out when we needed to go and things were crazy. I think they're just kinda still attached; they'll get used to you after a couple more times and then they won't be so rude," she apologized.

As he thanked her for taking him shopping Darcy smiled back at him. He looked adorable just then. He reminded her a little of the way Dex had been when they'd first gotten together, before he'd gotten used to her outgoing personality and adjusted to match it. "It's totally fun for me, don't even mention it," she said, waving it off casually. "You'll be so easy to shop for; you've got, like, the perfect body type. You're what, like...thirty-two waist? It's cake finding sizes in that vicinity."

At that, she let go of Conner's hand long enough to wave a passing cab over and then went back to closing her hand around the little boy's. "What kind of things do you like to wear, anyway?" she asked, arching her eyebrows with curiosity. Darcy didn't want to style him in things that he would hate; she learned from Marcus that that was a lost cause. But, she also did kind of want to have her influence on it. Yeah, it was a little territorial.

"You look good."

"I know. Clearly gonna be one of those girls who only carries in my belly. ...I bought him that shirt."

"Darcy, I'm really sorry..."

"You're sorry you slept with my fiance."

"No, I'm sorry I hurt you."

"...you know, you always were jealous of me."

Clearing her throat, Darcy shook her head just slightly, pushing away the memory of the last time she'd felt territorial about a man's clothes. She wasn't that girl anymore. She was someone completely different. She'd long since forgiven Rachel and Dexter for their indiscretion and the humiliation she'd felt. She and Rachel weren't friends, but they were civil.

But this was Dick and not Dexter. It was a wardrobe, not one shirt some other woman was dry-cleaning; and he was a friend, not a fiance. Maybe it didn't actually matter what she wanted or what she thought would look good on Dick's athletic-type body. She was the money and a support system, today; that would do, right? He was a grown man. Surely, he could make decisions on his own and if he wanted her opinion, he would ask.

"Nah, defiantly not Superman."Dick couldn't help but laugh. The idea of him being anything remotely close to Superman was amusing. Superman was all puppies and rainbows, Batman was the exact opposite. His life story wasn't nearly so boy scout. He'd seen a lot of death in his time, and it really was surprising that he'd gotten this far without losing himself in it all. Seeing enough murder and corruption could really get under a normal persons skin, but Dick was not normal. He made it his job to protect people and wouldn't allow himself to cross those dark lines. "Ever hear of Batman, kid?" He looked at Darcy, wondering how much she'd actually taught them about super heroes. Part of him kind of hoped the boys answers were no.

Batman could be a bit harsh for kids, he knew. He lived it. He knew without Alfred around he might have ended up exactly like Bruce was and that alone was a terrifying thought. Nobody needed two Bruce Wayne's. He raised an eyebrow at Darcy and grinned. "You'd make a decent profiler. On target. 32 exactly."

"Whatever. Alfred mostly shopped for me. I don't need anything too fancy." He wasn't suit and tie guy unless there was a funeral or wedding, other then that he generally just stuck to dark colors. "Perfect body? Me?" He looked sheepish and grinned a little more. Dark eyes watching her in amusement. "I used to be a Trapeze artist. My entire family was actually. We were the Flying Graysons, it took a lot of training. I had to stay at my peak. It wasn't that hard though, dad used to say I had circus blood and my first word was rube." Dick chuckled at the memory and watched as she called a cab, following her and sliding inside.

He'd been thinking about the circus a lot lately, he hadn't even realized it until mid story and he blinked with a slight shake of his head. "I don't know why I said that." He ran a hand through his hair out of habit he shrugged. "I'm not really attached to clothes much usually so um..whatever you think looks good? I did have this one leather jacket back home that I miss."

Darcy felt her face growing warm when Dick joked back that he definitely wasn't Superman. That was fair enough, but the way he'd said it back made her wonder if she was inadvertently trying to fill Clark's shoes with Dick's feet. She didn't much like that idea, so she pushed it away.

"Superman's better," Clark said defiantly, giving a facial shrug to show his indifference of Batman. Darcy groaned.

"Batman wears a silly hat," Conner chimed in, peeking around Darcy and grinning up at Dick.

"Okay, that's enough, let's get going, huh?" Darcy broke in, nudging Clark to hush. Looking back at Dick she grinned and shrugged. "Yeah, it's a gift," she teased back. Or, you know, you have the same build as my ex-fiance who was a 32," she added.

As the four of them slid into the cab, Darcy looked back at Dick and arched her eyebrows. "You were for real in the circus?" she asked, curious. "That's kind of awesome, actually," she tacked on before giving the driver directions and turning from Dick to buckle the boys into the same seat belt. Upon the mention of a leather jacket, Darcy looked back at Dick. "I could swing that," she replied. "You'd probably rock it."

Already, in her head, Darcy was trying to decide what kinds of clothes to choose for him. They had to fit his body type and over-all style interest, but at the same time, they had to stray from what she'd normally have bought for Dex, because that was just... Darcy didn't want to think about it.

Once they'd gotten to the mall and back out of the cab, Darcy chewed her bottom lip, taking her boys' hands and starting toward the entrance. "I'm thinking we should start somewhere simple," she began, "like Burlington; they have practically everything and I can probably get some stuff for the twins, too. Both sets," she said, muttering the last bit under her breath just slightly. Looking over at Dick, Darcy raised her eyebrows. "I'm guessing you're mostly a jeans kind of guy, huh? We can get you some suits, too, or at least some business casual stuff for when you decide to work or whatever..."

Dick raised an eyebrow and looked at Darcy with amusement. "Nah, it's true. His 'hat' is pretty funny." As far as personality went, Superman won that wore anyway. Batman wasn't exactly the most kid friendly. He knew, he'd lived it. Infact he was a little relieved when they said they didn't know, but he'd never admit it out loud. He slid into the cab and nodded.

"For real. Haly's Circus. My family was part owner. I could walk the traps before I could talk. I loved it. Still love it actually. The clowns a little less now admittedly, but the rest? I miss it sometimes." He ran a hand absent minded through his dark hair and looked over at her with a grin. "You're the best." She really had been good to him since he arrived. He wasn't sure if he should be paranoid or suspicious as to why, but he really did need a friend. Having one who wasn't a super hero was actually a good thing. They weren't really all that great at advice. Darcy on the other hand always had an ear out for him. He could talk without feeling pressured to do or be something else.

"Pretty much. I don't go out a lot during the day, at least I didn't before. I guess here I'll have to figure out work though so that'll be different." he gave her a little grin, though he was actually a bit nervous about it. "Never had to worry about money before. Which sounds pretty spoiled of me doesn't it?" He grinned sheepishly and tucked a hand into his pocket as he looked out the window at the city.

"This isn't even the strangest thing that's ever happened to me." He chuckled. "I remember this one time we fought on a giant type writer. Now that was weird."

Darcy smirked and rolled her eyes a little when Dick agreed with her son about Batman's hat. "Out of the mouths of babes, huh?" she joked, tousling Clark's hair with one hand. At least Dick was taking it well. He could have just as easily been offended.

A softer and more genuine smile crept over her lips as Dick told her a bit about his past. She realized, in the back of her mind — and admittedly ignored it — that he was the first friend she'd had since Trish who had actually told her anything willingly about their past that wasn't specific to trying to make her feel better about her own. Even her best friend's life had been a mystery until she'd been sent back and the DVD of the concert had been released. "I try," she teased lightly. "That's really cool, though. I haven't been to a circus since I was, like, seven...Rachel — she used to be my best friend, once upon a time — Uh, Rachel's dad would always take us. Every year until we both decided to let him know we were too cool for the circus," she said, her voice trailing off as she pushed any potential for a thoughtful frown away. "I'd love to take the boys to one sometime, if you hear of any around here," she said, attempting to gracefully segue into something for which she wouldn't need to think about Rachel.

Then, she paused. "Why don't you do it? I mean, if you find a circus...why not join? I mean, unless you just really don't want to be traveling and everything and I can't say I'd blame you, especially not on your own."

When he answered her about the jeans, Darcy nodded. "I thought maybe." She gave him a sympathetic sort of half-smile and patted one of his shoulders with her free hand, over Conner's head. "I never did, either, until I came here the first time. So when I had the chance to make one wish and get pretty much anything I wanted when I came back? It was kind of a no-brainer. Don't feel bad, you'll figure things out, Dick," she assured him.

His next remark caught her off-guard and she let out a surprised sort of huff where a laugh might have belonged. "Say what, now?" she asked, wrinkling her nose and knitting her brow as she looked back at him with a mingle of amusement and confusion on her face.
