You think you know London, its streets and alleys like the creases of your palm. You don't know all its secrets. In its depths are places to buy amulets and tarot readings, a talisman that permits the wearer to manipulate luck hangs alongside bottles of herbs and demon's blood. Books so ancient the pages are tissue-thin jostle against postcards of buses and telephone boxes. There are bars where the clientele don't just find the dim light flattering, but downright necessary, and the smell of brimstone lingers in the nostrils. There are corners and recesses where magic isn't trickery or sleight of hand, but blood and bone and flesh and you might -- you might -- catch sight of feathers pure as snow and light, if you know where to go. If you know how to see. There's a pitched battle being fought for this other London and your London besides -- one in which every human in existence is being counted in a gamble for souls, Heaven and Hell trying to tip the scales and grave-faced Librarians holding them steady. And all the time, people go about their lives with a little pinch of something extra in a London you'll never see. |

1 January, 1979... The first day of the new year and everything has gone wrong. Voldemort and his followers gained enough power and attacked the Ministry of Magic the night before New Years Day. The Order and it's supporters fought back and they fought hard. The Ministry was in chaos that night. Spells flying in all directions; anger, tears and sweat went into this battle. In the end, it was too much... too much magic and emotion in one place. The Ministry exploded and it's aftershocks went through England over and over again. Buildings collapsed, people panicked and trampled one another. Thousands upon thousands were killed. Muggles blamed a meteor hitting them, since there are a few small craters left where entire buildings just simply exploded. The magical folk are the only ones that know what really happened that night, but even then... they don't understand it. England has been cut off from everything and everyone, as if there is a bubble keeping them locked in. Albus Dumbledore is dead and Voldemort survived. Triumphant, Voldemort took his followers and captured Muggleborns to a new encampment, where they plan to slowly rebuild and eventually become the new law. Voldemort is determined... determined to rule all of England; both magical and Muggle to his liking. The Purest will be the highest in the hierarchy... with Muggles and Muggleborns at the bottom, basically slaves to the Pure. Unfortunately, magic as a whole has become shaky since the explosion. Spells don't seem to work as well... sometimes, they don't work at all. The Order is hiding in what is left of St. Mungos, doing their best to keep safe and healthy and prepare for what may come. There are still stragglers; people avoiding both sides or hoping that the Ministry will rise from the ashes and things will be normal once more. Though it has been a few months and many are dead, but there are still some alive who can fight for either side. The Wizarding World needs a leader, it needs hope. Things are coming together, slowly, and attacks have been made back and forth. Sides need to be taken. What side will you take in the Cataclysm? Will you fight alongside the Order of the Phoenix, help them rebuild and eventually triumph over Voldemort? Or will you stand with Voldemort, whose desire to make a new life may be more intriguing then making cozy in St. Mungos with the Order? Or will you remain neutral, watching from the sidelines? On October 31, 1981, an event happened that changed wizarding history – Tom Riddle, also known as Lord Voldemort, went to Godric's Hollow, and defeated Lily and James Potter. It was the turning point in the war, and six months later, the Death Eaters gained control of the Ministry of Magic and the Order was crushed. Muggleborns had severe restrictions put on them, including restricting jobs, education and who they could marry. Restrictions were also placed on muggle items, travel and communication with the muggle world. Purebloods flourished in the new political climate, and under the direction of Narcissa Malfoy, great social changes began to take shape. Called the "Great Wizarding Renaissance," there was a call to return to pureblood values and manners in order to further separate themselves from the immoral and inferior muggle world. Traditional courtship was brought back, and matches were made not of love, but to strengthen bloodlines. The year is 2001, and a new announcement by the Ministry of Magic will once again strengthen the divide, all but cutting off the magical world. Will it be enough to pull the Order of the Phoenix from its slumber, or will this be the stroke that severs the two worlds for good? |
