RP: Relaxing Socialization
Who: Gen, Addi, Quin, Lance, and a bunch of NPCs
When: Saturday, May 27 [back-dated]
Where: Provence, France
What: Lance, Quin, and the kids arrive in Provence, and Gen's family hosts a cook out to welcome them.
Warnings: Probably none

Yesterday had been challenging in ways Gen hadn't expected her holiday to become. Texting with Oliver before the festival had been fun and light and hopeful, and she was so excited for Australia. And then there was Coop, and things had been so serious between them for so long and ended so poorly between them that she didn't want to be reminded of how fun and silly and wonderful things had been with him for most of their time together. That kiss good night had felt like it came out of nowhere, but she knew that wasn't the case. She should have expected it. And now her head was just a jumbled mess on the thing.

She'd done the right thing stopping him, though. She hadn't magically forgotten their issues in the six months they'd been apart, and she'd finally felt ready to start seriously dating again, looking for that future she so wanted, but with someone else, and she wasn't going to let Cooper Vipond ruin that for her.

And besides, Quin, Lance, and the kids had arrived, and she was thrilled to get to spend time with them! She'd missed Auri and Fee, as she'd been so busy prepping for finals that she hadn't had time to really get out to visit them and Quin, and she was happy to have Quin's beau about, as well. Really, her family loved hosting and tended to take a 'more the merrier' attitude about it. Goodness knew they had room at the chateau!

They were sitting out back with drinks - nonalcoholic for now, since it was early afternoon and the kids were about - while her Papa manned the grill with Lance's help, though she wasn't sure how helpful he was actually being. Addi was helping her Mum in the kitchen, Geoffrey was swimming with Auri (he'd thought he might have to help her learn, but apparently the little girl was a fish in the water!), and Gen sat on a lounge chair in a pair of shorts and tank top, her standard summer wear, with Quin in the chair next to her and Fee on her lap. She bounced the squirmy toddler on her knees, though she could tell he was itching to go run around a play. God, she couldn't wait to have one of her own!

Gen made a face at Fee, laughing when he reached out and grabbed her lip. "I'm so glad you guys could make it out," she said to Quin. "It's been a crazy few weeks."

There were a lot of things that had happened since Easter, and her mind was still reeling from so much of it, but dancing with Coop yesterday was definitely at the top of the list of mind-muddling events. "It has!" she agreed, sighing softly before leaning in to give Fee a bunch of silly kisses on his neck, making the toddler giggle. This made her heart ache, too, because she knew that if things had worked out the way she and Coop thought they would nine months ago when they first took that home pregnancy test, she would be due about now or have a tiny newborn of her own.

She hadn't thought about that in months, and she was overwhelmed with the emotions as it hit her all at once now.

But Quin didn't know that she'd been pregnant for that brief time. Her mum and Coop were the only ones that knew, unless Coop had told anyone. The woman who rarely cries had to blink back the tears then, trying desperately to get her emotions under control. And then Fee squirmed and bounced and gave her a very wet kiss on the cheek, and she gave a little laugh at it. God, she loved babies. "Not entirely, though I've been trying. This holiday has been... eventful so far," she admitted, embarrassed that she sounded so emotional.

Fee definitely adored his Auntie Vieve. Even if he hadn't seen her much lately, he was ever the flirt and the cuddler. He was especially fond of blondes like his mummy, but he didn't confuse her with others. He knew who was who so far in his life, pretty well.

Her gaze sharpened a bit with concern and interest when she heard the emotions leaking into her friend's voice, automatically paying more attention to her rather than letting her gaze roam around as they spoke. "What's going on, Vieve?" she asked in French that still came easily enough to her. She didn't even have much of an accent, given she had learned it and English from the crib, something her French-ancestry-proud family had done purposefully with all of their children.

Gen easily switched to French, always happy to have the chance to do so with someone outside her family, as it wasn't so often she could since moving to the UK two years ago. But this wasn't exactly a happy question or situation, though it was supposed to be. She'd intended it to be when she'd asked Quin to bring Lance and the kids out. "Coop showed up yesterday." And that wasn't even to mention Oliver's visit earlier in the week and agreeing to meet him in Australia and all her confused feelings about that.

Her lips pressed together in a thin line then as she couldn't find the words to express the mess that was in her head just then. But Quin new how much Coop had meant to her, how heartbroken she'd been when it had ended, even though she'd been the one to do it.

"Oooooooh," Quin breathed, sitting back a little and drawing her feet up under her. "Did he now. What did he want?" Because that seemed awfully coincidental and all, especially after Vieve's recent publicised flirting with Oliver Wood.

The Squib was a bit worried about her friend. She knew that Vieve was still hung up a bit about Cooper Vipond. A relationship that long, it was hard not to be, she suspected. But she also knew that Vieve was a little ... infatuated with Wood. Some thing she wasn't certain she approved of, not that that mattered.

Gen sighed and shook her head, shrugging faintly, letting jump on her stomach a bit more and smiling at him as he did. Such a cute baby! "He was here on 'business', which I don't disbelieve, but of course I know he chose Provence because I'm here." It wasn't a coincidence, she knew that much. "Mum and I ran into him at the farmer's market yesterday morning, and naturally she invited him to the festival last night."

Because heaven forbid her mother take a cue if it went against what she thought was best for her children. Still, she couldn't deny that being in his arms again, dancing with him, had felt good and right in a way she was refusing to look closer at just yet. "He danced with my Mum, the charming bastard." Though she winced a bit at her slip. "Sorry." She did try not to curse in front of the children, but at least Fee was young enough still to not be overly impressionable? "And then he asked me to dance, and I couldn't say no." It had been a weak moment, caught up in the spirit of the festival and her Papa encouraging her to follow her heart...

"Of course he did," Quin murmured. In some lights that was a little creepy; in some a little sweet. She hasn't decided which one this was yet.

Her lips twitched. "At least your mother has good intentions, I suppose," she said. She knew her own didn't really. "But one would think you're old enough to manage your life by now." It was one of her reoccurring frustrations with her dear brother, that he still sometimes assumed despite her beinf the elder that he needed to manage her life.

She waved away the apology. It would happen sometimes. "Well, you could have. But you didn't want to," she said gently. "You still have feelings for him."

It might have felt creepier to her if Coop hadn't given her a head's up that he was in the area, even if she thought he might not have planned to. He had to have known how angry she would have been if she'd run into him without knowing. At least this way, she'd been somewhat prepared for the possibility.

"I think she does, and I think she wanted him to come, not just for me." Because the truth was that her family had always loved Coop, and her mum had taken a particular shine to him, probably having something to do with him having lost his own mother. "I am, but... none of them really understood why I turned his proposal down," she explained. "They didn't see the problems we had." But, then again, Coop hadn't seemed to see them either, or at least not see them as serious. It was why she'd had to walk away, even though it had killed her to do it.

She winced at Quin's gentle yet astute counter. "I... I think when you love someone the way I loved Coop, those feelings never completely go away. A part of me will probably always love him." It felt like a safe enough statement to make. She wasn't saying she was in love with him still, after all. "And I do miss the good times with him." Perhaps a less safe admission, but an honest one nevertheless.

Quin's lips pressed together slightly and she leaned back in her chair, adjusting the angle of her broad-brimmed hat. She understood why Genevieve had turned him down. She had seen first hand, a time or two, some of the problems. Heard about them, as well. She might have been going through a difficult time, but she had still tried to be there for Gen especially more recently since her life was more together now.

She considered her friend's words for a moment before dipping her head in a nod of acceptance for that. She wouldn't know from personal experience, but she knew the way that she did still miss Ambrose in her life. "I can see that," she conceded.

"But there were also the bad times. You wouldn't want to try again if it were just going to be the same thign all over, would you?" Some people didn't seem to mind. She wasn't as sure. She didn't want to see Vieve get her heart broken again.

Leave it to Quin to get right to the heart of the problem. It was part of why she'd taken to the other woman despite her shyness. She was a caring, generous, no bullshit person, even if Gen got the sense that Quin struggled to apply those things to herself. "No," she answered immediately, no hesitation in her expression or the word. "And that's why when he kissed me good night, I stopped him and turned him away. I can't go back to that. Especially not..." It was on the tip of her tongue to bring up children, about the baby she'd almost had but that had been stolen away from her before it had really had a chance to be, but she didn't want to keep that pain at the surface.

She sighed, then, sitting up a bit more to give Fee some good snuggles. "And that's not even taking into account Oliver visiting me earlier in the week." Which was a can of worms, she knew, as Quin did not really approve of Oliver's behavior. Neither had she, frankly, but she did understand that he had been in a strange sort of place with Romi, and she was attracted to and curious enough about him to give this whole Australia thing a shot. And he had recovered things quite well yesterday when they'd been texting. "I have no idea where things will go with him, but he invited me to go to Australia with him. I told him I couldn't right away, but that I'd join him there on the 5th," she admitted to Quin, a small smile on her lips. She was cautiously excited about it.

Quin could be brave for everyone but herself. Sensible, too. It was with herself she never knew what to do or how to be. Shynses she'd been born with, exacerbated by being shamed and hidden away much of her life. She could put on the pureblood face, but to be genuine and brave she had to know you and be doing it for someone other than herself.

Her head tilted and she made an inquiring sound at the hesitation. There was more there, though she'd not force it out of her.

"Hmm." It wasn't that she disapproved of the Quidditch star himself; it was his recent behavior she found despicable. She knew what cheating would do to her. While she tried not to judge other people by those standards, she had a Hufflepuff's love of honesty. "Did he now." She truly didn't want to rain on Genevieve's parade here, she was happy that the other woman seemed excited, but... "Has he broken up with his girlfriend yet?"

That, to her, seemed like a very important question. If he hadn't, she really wasn't going to approve of this trip. She loved Genevieve, and she didn't want to see her in that tangled web.

Gen let out a soft, relieved sigh when Quin didn't press her on her unfinished thought. She knew Quin would be sympathetic and comforting, but that was a large part of why she didn't tell people. It happened all the time to women all over the world, there was no reason to make a big deal out of it. Even if it had felt like one at the time, and again now that she realized she was in that window of when she would have been due.

"Yes, he has," she answered confidently. No, she hadn't outright asked him, but there'd been a significant change in the tone of his messages from him inviting her on Wednesday to them clearing the air yesterday. And he'd seemed determined to break up with Romi before going to Australia. If it turned out that he hadn't? She would be furious, and that would be the end of it.

Quin wouldn't push right now. Maybe later. Another time when it seemed appropriate. But if Gen did want to talk abut it, she would always listen, and give hugs, and advice, and what solace she could. She'd not miscarried, but her pregnancy with Felix had been hard on her in part because of how low she'd been emotionally, and she'd been scared much of the time that she might lose him.

She nodded, accepting that answer though a little skeptical, after the way everything had gone down. She could be overly trusting and naive, but even she had trouble looking at a known liar and trusting him all over again. But Gen was much more ... everything than she was, so if she thought it would work, who was she to gainsay it.

But... "Be careful, Vieve," she said softly. "His kind of person... he's a heartbreaker in the press, not without cause, for once. I don't want you to be hurt." But unlike Quin, Gen was a risk taker.

That was...probably not terrible advice, even if Gen didn't really want to hear it just then. She didn't really think Oliver was a heartbreaker, at least not intentionally, and she didn't think her heart would be at risk of being broken anytime soon, either. It's hard to break something that's already broken, the thought came unbidden, and she winced faintly. Her heart was just fine. She'd spent six months getting over Cooper, and she was. She just didn't think she'd be falling in love in the immediate future. She wanted to fall in love again, but a part of her wondered if that sort of life-changing love was a once in a lifetime sort of thing.

"Well, even if things don't work out with Oliver, I'll be fine. I'm attracted to him and like him well enough, but that's all it really is so far. I'd like to see if it could be more, though." Her nose wrinkled then, and she laughed shortly. "I'm not getting any younger, after all. Already thirty! I know witches have a larger window for child-bearing, but I'm definitely starting to hear my clock ticking," she admitted. But that didn't mean she was going to rush into a serious commitment just so she could have children. She wanted more than that.

Quin raised her eyebrows under her hat. "Vieve, I love you, but like you said, you're a witch. There's a large window and if you end up with kids with a jerk, that's the rest of your very long witchy life you have ties to him."

Not that she thought Vieve would do it just for kids, but... along with the rrbound... in a manner of speaking.

"Go and have fun, but try not to get caught up in the giddiness? Romance is wonderful, but... I mean, he cheated on his girlfriend for real once and then publicly flirted with you. And I remember some of what the papers said when he was with Miss Bobbin. You know I approach all that with skepticism, but he has a history of that and he obviously puts his work first. If you want a family that might not be the best combination. I mean, if he can't even figure out how to juggle two people with busy jobs, what would he be like with children in the picture?"

She knew she was likely being a downer and she needed to look more at the cheerful side of it all, like she usually did, but she was genuinely worried for her friend.

Gen wrinkled her nose at that and then sighed, shrugging her shoulders. "I know that, but I never wanted to wait until I was that much older," she admitted. Honestly, she'd hoped to start a family around thirty, and she'd felt she was one her way to it with Coop, but things had gotten so bad with him, that she'd been derailed. But Quin was right, this wasn't something she needed to rush into with just anyone so that she could have babies. She would get there in time, and she did want to make sure it was with the right person. "But I promise, I won't have kids until I'm married, and I won't marry someone I'm not madly in love with." She felt a pang at that, but she worked hard to ignore it.

Quin wasn't wrong about that, but she wasn't going to stress about that at this early stage. Oliver wanted a family, and she was willing to give him a chance, to see if that could be a journey they could go on together eventually. It wasn't something she was going to rush, though. "I will go and have fun and do my best not to get in over my head," she promised, smiling now as Fee tried to wiggle off her lap, seemingly wanting to go play with his sister in the water. "Can he go in with them? Geoffrey will take great care," she promised, though she would understand if Quin wasn't comfortable with the thought, even with them sitting there watching.

"I don't mind if you do it out of order, so long as you're in love," the blonde murmured. Though she did have a tiny bit of a traditionalist's heart, she wasn't exactly moving in an order with Lancelot! They were looking at houses now, and she hadn't told him yet that she was ready for marriage. In part because she wasn't, quite yet. But she was enjoying all the time she had with him so far, and whatever might come in their future.

Quin had to accept that promise,t hough her nod was a little grudging, if you knew her well enough. She didn't like it, but she knew she had absolutely no say in it beyond the advice she'd already given. Vieve would have to come to find her own answers.

"So long as Geoffrey doesn't let him go or anything," Quin said. Fee was very good in the water for his age, but he had to be watched absolutely every second, just in case. She trusted Geoffrey, and she'd be here watching too, so she wasn't too worried. She tried not to stifle her children with her worryign and hovering every moment.

While that was sweet of Quin to say, this was one area in which Gen had always taken the more traditional view - to a point, at least. She had no qualms with casual sex or cohabitation, obviously, but when it came to having children, she definitely wanted to take that step with her husband, whenever she ended up with one. And she would end up withe one, she believed that with her whole heart. She wasn't meant to be alone.

"Of course," she replied with a small smile, shifting to stand up from the lounge chair and bringing Fee with her. She handed the toddler off to her brother, making sure to give him firm instructions to keep hold of Felix at all times.

When she came back and sat again, she glanced over at Quin with an only slightly forced smile. "Enough about my love life dramas, though. How are you? How's house hunting going?" Anything to get her mind of her own emotional turmoil. And she was actually interested in what was going on with her friend.

Quin was a little bit of a traditionalist at heart; her entire life had been built around it in many ways. But Lancelot had changed some things in her life, for the better, she thought, and so the thought of cohabitating before marriage didn't bother her any longer.

Though they'd yet to be truly intimate, something that would probably shock Genevieve, who had a much more liberal attitude about sex. It wasn't that Quin disapproved, either; it was simply her levels of comfort with that sort of thing pretty much didn't exist. They were equalizing with Lancelot a lot more at this point, but perhaps it was because of how awkward her initial times with Ambrose had been, she wanted it to be something she went into completely freely, though that was no criticism of her previous husband at all.

She watched her son squeal happily when he was in the water and promptly try to squirm out of the boy's grip to flail around in it himself. "I'm not sure how I did it, but I have two water babies," she said in a fond tone mostly to herself.

"Oh, but you're much more interesting than me," she told her friend with a warm smile meant to relax and reassure the other woman. "I'm boring. It's been all children and work and house hunting, which seems to be going well at some points and then goes completely sideways when you blink!" She sighed gustily. "This is why I never minded when Ambrose dealt with it all, but this is a family decision now and I cannot put it all on Lancelot, not with the children involved."

Gen watched with just a touch of pride as Geoffrey laughed and adjusted his hold on the toddler so that Felix might think he had more freedom in the water than he actually did, all while still ensuring nothing awful happened. Considering he was the baby of the family, with no nieces or nephews yet, she was definitely proud that he had any instincts with young children at all. Which, she realized belatedly, might be a somewhat sexist sentiment, though she hadn't meant it as such.

"It's in their blood," Gen responded ominously before laughing a bit. "Honestly, I think I'd be terribly disappointed if my children didn't love the water. Or the sky," she added almost belatedly. But flying was such an integral part of her life, she knew she would likely be disappointed if any of her future children hated flying, even if she would try her best to encourage whatever their natural talents and inclinations leaned toward.

Gen waved a hand at Quin's initial protest, not thinking it true in the least. Certainly, Quin was calmer, quieter, gentler than her, but that didn't make her any less interesting. This romance with Lance, for example, she found very interesting. "You're hardly boring, cheri," she said at first, waving a hand.

Her nose wrinkled at the mention of things going sideways with house hunting, feeling for her friend. "Oh, I don't blame you! Hiring my realtor was the best decision ever after... well, when I needed to find my place at the beginning of the year." Once she needed to come back to the UK after the holidays, after she and Cooper had broken up, her things having been removed from his place and kept in storage for a time until the realtor had helped her find her cottage. But as much as she loved her little slice of cottage-heaven, she knew that she missed the flat, missed sharing her space and her life... with him. But that was her past, she reminded herself, and it was only her past for good reason. It was better, she knew, to focus on her future, which at least in the immediate sense included Oliver.

It was also a relief, at least, that Fee tneded to float rather than sink. And Geoff obviously had things under control for now, and though she'd keep an eye on him, she wasn't going to hover unless she was given a reason to do so. He didn't get upset with a face full of water or anything, but then, she'd taken him under more than once, plugging his little nose, and much like Auri, he always loved getting to go in and splash about.

"Auri's only gotten to go up a few times so far. I don't think she minds, but I don't think it'll be her passion either, though she might change and surprise me." Even Quin could ride a broom -- some brooms, at least. There were some where the charms obviously didn't like her or didn't want to listen, which was par for course in her experience for Squibs. Some things worked and some things didn't. It was made even more frustrating by the fact it wasn't consistent in every Squib.

She did truly believe she was boring. She was a homebody in a lot of ways, preferred small gorups of people, her family, and domesticity. She loved her academic things, and her music, though she wasn't a recluse by far though had things gone differently in her first marriage she probably would have become one.

"We have one. But a lot of it has to be hands on," she said with a sigh. "And the one place we really liked, it fell through because someone over bid us and it honestly wasn't worth raising the amount that much more, unfortunately." Not when it definitely needed some work. Not that it was urgent, at least, but they'd agreed they needed a place new to both of them. She'd be keeping the beach place because it meant a lot to her, and would be a place to go in the summer sometimes, but she agreed with Lancelot that they needed a place that was both of theirs. "I just hope we find a place soon, bcause while what we have works for now, it won't work forever."

It was fantastic, in Gen's opinion, that Auri was getting the chance to be exposed to brooms and flying and quidditch at her young age, though she couldn't help but wish there was a way for muggleborn children to get involved in the magical world earlier. She understood the complications involved in such an endeavor, but it was still something that weighed on her at times. "Oh, I wouldn't be surprised if it changed several times over the years," she agreed with a smile. She was a bit of an anomaly, she knew, in how she'd decided on quidditch young and stuck it out and actually succeeded in making it her career.

Gen wrinkled her nose at that, hating that her friend was struggling to find the right place at the right price. "Well, all's the better then. You'll find the right place soon, I'm sure," she offered confidently. She couldn't be sure of that, but she could be hopeful for it.

"Oh, won't it? Is it because you're planning more children in the future?" she couldn't resist asking with a bit of teasing. She knew that Quin and Lance weren't quite at that point - as far as she knew, the couple still hadn't had sex yet, though she didn't think Quin would offer up that information without prompting.

"Oh, I'm sure it will, though I've always admired people like you and Tim who always knew what they wanted to do." Her youngest brother had always known what he wanted to study. Gen had always wanted to do Quidditch. Quin had never chosen one thing. She did a bit of everything, sometimes.

"Gosh I hope so," she said with a sigh. It was a bit stressful. Not on the scale of some of the stuff she had dealt with, but it was something that wasn't the easiest either.

Quin started to turn bright red, and she glanced with wide eyes over to where Lancelot was, hoping he hadn't overheard. They hadn't talked-talked about children; he hadn't quite brought it up, and she had trouble bringing such things up to anyone.

"We haven't talked about it," she said in a whisper just above a squeak. "But I do think he wants some. Though I suspect he thinks he's too old." There she snorted and almost rolled her eyes, a bit of amusement lessening her embarrassment. Her beau wasn't that much older than her, and he was a wizard to boot. "I wouldn't say no to more kids, though."

Quin's reaction was everything Gen had hoped for, though she didn't always try to tease her friend to blushing quite so bright. It wasn't her fault Quin was so easily embarrassed, but she never would have asked that where others could hear and make Quin feel even less comfortable. She wanted to point out that there was a promise ring on her finger and they were moving in together, and shouldn't that have been something they talked about when they'd made those two commitments to each other? But Gen held off for now. Not everyone talked about whether or not they wanted kids on the first date.

"Pfft! Oh please," she scoffed at the thought Lance might think himself too old for baby making. Not only was he a wizard, but even without that, he was still a man, and men were physically capable of fathering children far longer than women were capable of bearing them. "Well, you're a fantastic mum. I think the two of you make a wonderful team. And I would recommend bringing it up to him, if only to see what he might think about it as a general idea." Okay so she couldn't keep all her thoughts about it to herself.
