Your onboarding is efficient, I’ll give you that.  Government red tape at home would’ve had me sitting in a waiting room and filling out forms for at least three days. And the apartment is, well. No offense, but it’s kind of ridiculous. I’ve spent months on entire spaceships smaller than that apartment. Your budget probably needs a massive overhau

Anyway. Uh I’ve never been very good at social media Thank you. For explaining the situation and telling me where to find Tennal Halkana. A few more days and he’d probably have charmed his way to the head of a gang or been exiled into the woods and tracking him down would’ve been a lot harder. I’m better at catching farm animals than people.

Oh. My name’s is Surit.  So. Yeah. Hello.

We're not that wild and crazy around here. Well, some people are, but I work on a farm and run a support group, so like, not it.

What kind of support group?

Death Club, for people who have died back home or dealt with memories of it while they've been here.

Oh. So that's common enough to warrant a club. What do you mean by dealt with memories while they've been here? You can die at home and feel it here?

Yeah, usually get a dozen or so at meetings every week and that's not even everybody. You can get all sorts of memories from home, feels like you lived it but you were here the whole time, so including death and happy shit too.

That sounds uncomfortable. Are you sure those memories aren't being implanted by advanced architects? I thought I knew what even the rank one's were capable of but I think we've only scratched the surface.

Uh I'm guessing you don't mean architect like those rich snobby fucks who create bridges?

Uh, no. Does the term Reader not mean anything special to you either?

Okay do we've got some people that can implant memories (yikes)??? And then Readers can ... Tell?

More or less. Architects generally can write a person for a short period of time. Make them think something, do something. But they have to focus on it. Readers can Implanting a memory permanently is unheard of, but so was brainwashing until I met a rank one with some serious remnant assistance.

There's a little of everything around here, if you know where to look. It sounds as if your friend just hasn't known where to look yet for the real mischief.

Ah, one of those, eh? I'm reformed of that life. Mostly. I'm a teacher so I'm a bit of an example, now. But the truth is there's a lot less deadly trouble here than there was at home.

That might be true for us too, I'm not sure yet. What do you teach? If you don't mind me asking.

Civics, at a high school level. It's not where I saw myself, but I've been enjoying the challenge. What's home like for you both?

Teaching is an honorable profession that doesn't get nearly enough respect. What did you do before?

It's mostly politics and military stress. I grew up on a farming planet. Tennal is the nephew of a legislator and grew up in the seat of government for the sector. Our homes were very different.

Caused problems for myself. I believe the terminology you'd be familiar with here was "I was in research".

Ah - it sounds like you've seen two very different sides of things. I was insulated from a lot of the worst of things growing up, but that changed as soon as I left the privilege and safety of home. Is there a reason Sydney is referring to your friend as space boy?
