I don't like the way I worded that so let me try again.

I'm sorry you've had losses in your life. I don't know the details so it's not my place to say anything one way or another. I can't promise anything here either. It's easy for me to say things won't happen or that I can take care of myself but you've lived your life. You know it better than I do and it's wrong of me to try and brush anything off.

I'm going to back off here, give you space. If you ever want to talk I'm around. I'll probably still check up on you. A lack of interest doesn't mean you get rid of me that easily. We're still friends.

Unless it's super awkward. You don't have to respond to this. It's all for my benefit, really, because I feel like I should've handled things better. HOWEVER, if it's super awkward you'll have to say that much so I can back off completely.
