Who: Sam Winchester the New and Mary the Virgin.
What: Coffee!
When: The Friday after Sam's arrival.
Where: Coffee shop in London.
Warnings: Nope!

Mary was out on the patio of the coffee shop that Sam had mentioned. She was a little early, and as such, was reading her book and enjoying the early spring breeze. Every now and then, a little girl of three or four would come and sit down by Mary, and Mary would pull her into her lap, reading to her for a moment or three. It didn't really matter that the girl didn't know the story, she loved sitting with the older lady and Mary loved sitting with the little one.

She took a sip of his latte, giggling when she got foam on her lip. Being a foster kid was a good enough explanation, and she just nodded. Telling the truth - oh, hey, I'm a clone of the Virgin Mary and serve that role now because I remember everything - it didn't seem like something she should say right away. But she didn't like lying either. "If I tell you something that would sound crazy in your world, will you be scared of me?"

"Hit me with it. Trust me," Sam replied with an arched brow, "I'll have probably heard and seen weirder." He wanted to point out that she had foam still on her upper lip, but he left it at that, since the foam wasn't all that distracting. And for what it was worth, whatever she had to say couldn't top the fact that Tony Stark existed. That alone was the cherry on top to this crazy reality.

Idly shredding her napkin, she licked her lips nervously. "In my world, there was this big to do when a bunch of artifacts were discovered that proved that mythological figures were real. So the government cloned us and shipped us to live with different families in Florida and made us go to school together. The thing is, we have all of the memories. Some of them rallied against what they were, but I always kind of embraced it." By the time she finished talking, the napkin was nothing but a series of tiny wadded up balls.

"Huh," Sam said, vague in his tone, "That's not too weird, to be honest. It's no weirder than what's happened to me. So who are you the clone of?" He wasn't even going to try and guess. There were too many choices, too many mythologies to go by, and from her personality alone, he couldn't even begin to pinpoint her. Maybe, he idly thought, she was a part of the maiden/mother/crone trifecta of pagan mythology.

She was wearing her favorite blue hoodie. She pulled the hood up over her head and looked at him pointedly. "My name's Mary Cohen. Guess."

"Mary's a pretty common name, my mom's name was Mary," he pointed out, but that was a pretty damn big proverbial neon sign for her to throw up. "You're the clone of the virgin mother? That explains why you're so good with kids. And you're unusually calming. I wasn't going to look a gift horse in the mouth with the latter one though. I was just hoping it wasn't supernatural." He shook his head with a huff of a chuckle. "Like I said, it's not any weirder than me. I'm one of a group of kids that were born in 1983 with powers that only cropped up a couple years back. Apparently, the bunch of us were 'chosen' by a demon to be potential leaders of an army of demons. Needless to say? I didn't really take the job offer. Especially since the demon was the reason my mom died, and the girl I was going to propose to." He shook his head.

"He's gone now. Dead. Same with my powers, but well. That's my story." Only the tip of the iceberg, but it was the meat of what made him him.

"Oh, it was?" She smiled, but the smile soon broke into a sad little frown when he mentioned what he'd gone through. "That's ... more than anyone should have to handle, no wonder you're so wary of things." She reached out to squeeze his hand, wishing that he'd not had to endure any of that. He was sweet, anyone could see that. But it explained why he looked so ill at ease, why he looked like a skittish colt.

He gave a wry, "Yeah. Thanks." Sam shook his head, "I just have to keep telling myself that this place is different. That all that is back there. Dean's told me this place is a godsend in comparison. I should just relax." Not that he felt that he could, or that he ever would. "Sorry," Sam murmured. "That was kind of a good mood annihilator. So you remember your past life? That's got to be kind of weird."

"That's the best thing about good moods, Sam, you can always get them back." She squeezed his hand, not letting go. "It's not that bad. I remember a lot of good things, mostly. It was worse for people who had hard lives. Or were Greek, since they had so many siblings." That made her giggle, and she shook her head. "I shouldn't poke fun, though."

Her hand on his was not unwelcome, though it was an unfamiliar, unusually comforting thing. He squeezed back and listened intently, nodding with a half-smile of amusement at her teasing. "Mostly I'd figure it's weird remembering ancient times. Having prophetic dreams is one thing; remembering an entire life apart from your own, in such a different time and culture as this one... It'd definitely be something to learn and teach from. And the fact that you remember Jesus. Well. That's something else, too." He didn't want to bring up the fact that, despite his father and brother's stout agnosticism, he had faith. He'd even taken up going to church in his time apart from them. It was comforting.

"Oh, it is. I still go to temple every Saturday night." She laughed to herself, thinking to herself. "I think it helps me. I feel like it's something that happened to me, just kind of like how childhood memories are older and fuzzier." Specific details sometimes went blurry, but she always remembered the bigger facts.

"You don't seem like the type to lose faith easily," Sam said in a complimentary tone -- he admired those who could keep their faith. He slipped his hand away, belatedly realizing that she still had it in hers, and picked up his cookie again, taking another bite. "So other than being exceptional at baking, going to temple and taking care of kids, what do you do for fun?"

She kind of pouted when he took her hand away, but she hadn't realized that was what she was doing. Instead, she laughed. "Um. Sudoku? Words with Friends?" She was pretty boring, and hated admitting it. "I volunteer a lot, and then I visit my friends."

"Words with Friends is addicting. It's one of the new games that I really like on there. I'm more of a Farmville kind of guy, myself," Sam admitted shamelessly. He loved Facebook games. "I like taking walks," he shared, since she shared, too, "reading. I know it might sound geeky, but I like researching stuff. I probably know more mythology and lore than is healthy, and probably know more about law in the continental 48 states than some of the law enforcement there. I was actually studying to be a lawyer, before I dropped out."

"I like to read as well." She dug through her tote bag, bringing out her Kindle and smiling. "Don't get an ereader, you'll end up spending way too much money without thinking." She was kind of sad he'd dropped out. "Oh, why did you drop out? Your face kinda lights up when you start talking about law."

"I've been meaning to get myself one of those," Sam said with a nod to her Kindle, "I was just waiting for the price to go down and the bugs to get fixed first, since the technology was still pretty new from where and when I am - I'm about four years behind, here," he mentioned, leaning back when she asked about school. "Well, my dad disappeared, going after the demon I told you about, so Dean came to get me and we went looking for dad. After I got back, though..." His face fell and he shook his head. "Things just panned out in a way that made it impossible for me to stay there. I liked the freedom, but I don't think I could go back to it now."

"To law school, or to the road? And I think that this place is a second chance for you. It is for a lot of people. I'll be honest, I think that's why most people get brought here. To have a second chance, or to do something great." She knew that things were a bit better here for her, if only because so many people looked out for her.

"To law school. And it's just not who I am, anymore. I mean, I had this plan, y'know. To go to law school, to get married and have the picket fence life. But after all that's happened, after all I've done..." He shook his head and put his hands up. "My brain isn't wired for that kind of life anymore. I guess it was my act of rebellion. Our lives were so far from normal that my teenage rebel phase was to be as normal as humanly possible." He sighed and finished up the cookie.

"I'll probably take another road altogether, now. I know I'm not going to go that route, but I sure as hell don't want to be doing what I've been doing recently, either. I had a feeling that it'd be the end of me. It's the end of everyone in the life, eventually. We're all dead, it just varies, how long it takes for our fates to catch up to us." Sam blinked when he caught himself again, and then rolled his eyes. "God, I'm such a killjoy, I'm really sorry about that, Mary," he huffed a sheepish chuckle.

When he apologized, she'd been smiling at him with a head on her hand. "Come on, let's go for a walk. You're grousing. Fresh air will help." She stood up and finished the rest of her hot chocolate before giving the rest of her cookies to the girl who worked behind the counter to split with her coworkers.

"All right," Sam said, standing and trying to clear his mind. No more talking about that stuff with her -- Mary didn't need that, and spilling his guts to her, while cathartic, wasn't exactly healthy for anyone. He finished up his latte and then smiled as he held the door for her again. "You're right, though. It's a second chance, and I shouldn't look at it as something bad. I'm just so used to stuff like this being a trick, or a delusion. I mean, I've always wanted to come to London. I always wanted to see what other countries are like. I really should have gone abroad before school, honestly." It had been a thought, he remembered, but the last thing he wanted at that point was to continue traveling.

"And now that I can, I should enjoy it," added Sam as he stepped onto the walkway. "Got any place in mind, or should we just go?"

Listening to him, she grinned impishly. "There's a portkey near here, where's one of the other places you always wanted to go?" She took his hand and started to walk quickly toward the alley where she knew the portkey was located.

"I um," he said, brow furrowed in a suddenly-blank way. "Well, I always wanted to go to Paris, too. The Louvre? I also want to see the palace of Versailles." Even though he knew the latter was probably haunted as hell, he just wanted to sight-see. Millions of normal people went to the palace without incident, and he just wanted to be one of those. "But we really don't have to, I mean, if it's too much trouble." He furrowed his brow, and a small, still childlike part of him hoped that it wasn't too much of an imposition. After all, he really DID want to go see the Louvre.

"Ooh, Paris sounds nice, and I think the Louve will still be open." She still held his hand, her sneaker'd feet slapping against the concrete as she walked as quickly as she could. Her legs were shorter than his, and she had to fairly jog. She couldn't help but giggle a little.

Trying to walk slow enough where Mary didn't have to sprint every so often, Sam followed her lead, until they got to the portkey. Once on the other end of the magical trip, Sam had to take a moment to catch his bearings again. "I don't think I'll ever get used to that feeling," he admitted with a small huff, bent forward slightly at the sudden queasiness. "Just a sec, sorry. So do you do this often?"

"You will eventually, and yup! All the time." She smiled and rocked on her heels. "I live in New York, how do you think I got here for coffee?" She was loathe to say it was a date - he barely knew her.
