Who: Sam Winchester the New and Mary the Virgin.
What: Coffee!
When: The Friday after Sam's arrival.
Where: Coffee shop in London.
Warnings: Nope!

Mary was out on the patio of the coffee shop that Sam had mentioned. She was a little early, and as such, was reading her book and enjoying the early spring breeze. Every now and then, a little girl of three or four would come and sit down by Mary, and Mary would pull her into her lap, reading to her for a moment or three. It didn't really matter that the girl didn't know the story, she loved sitting with the older lady and Mary loved sitting with the little one.

"I mean going to internationally known museums with internet strangers, not the portkeys," though Sam couldn't really wrap his mind around ever getting around without cars or planes. The fact that they were in Paris within a blink of an eye after being in London was just plain weird to him. He finally straightened out and smiled at Mary. "I would be really wary about doing that sort of thing, myself. But I'm technically more paranoid than most."

"You're not really a stranger. I know your name. And you're not going to hurt me, I know that." She fussed with his hair while he was bent over double, straightening it out. "If your tummy stays upset, we can get you some ginger ale."

He chuckled a little at her calling it a 'tummy'. That was endearing as hell. "I think I'll be all right once we get moving again," he assured, and then looked either direction, before feeling like a complete tourist. "Oh man, I'm not even here two minutes and I'm already lost," he chuckled. "Lead the way, Mary," he said with a wave of his hand.

"I've never been here before!" She giggled to herself, shaking her head. "I don't even speak French!" A smattering of Spanish, and she was fluent in Hebrew and Yiddish, but that was it.

"I'm only fluent in English and Latin, don't look at me!" He laughed outright before looking around them, and then he got a bright idea. He pulled out his phone and tapped at the keypad for a minute or two. "Gotta love GPS," he said with a nearly smug smile. "All right, we're about a mile away from the Louvre." He pointed with a nod in the direction they were going, and then pocketed his phone, taking her hand again. Once he knew where he was going, he was a man on a mission; he walked with authority - albeit still slow enough to make sure she didn't have to take giant steps.

She giggled when he took her hand. "I'm sure they give the tour in a few languages there." She couldn't help but look around at the sights as they walked; she'd never been to France, and everything looked just how she'd imagined. "It's so pretty here," she murmured to herself.

He was also absorbing their surroundings, "Everything is so... proportional," he said with a tone of amusement. "I guess this is what happens when you have everything built on the metric system. Everything winds up rounding out with itself. Hey, if they have a place to eat near there, would you like to grab some lunch first? I always admire art better on a full stomach," he joked.

She nodded, strolling with him. "There should be cafes on every corner from what I've read." She didn't speak French and she'd never been, but she'd always wanted to go. Smiling up at him, she shook her head. "Your smile is amazing, you should use it more."

"So is yours," Sam deflected, but the smile didn't falter from his face. "So let's find a place that has English-speaking wait-staff, and try to look as Canadian as possible. I hear they don't much care for American tourists, so..." He nudged her gently and kept an eye open for a menu posted outside that looked English on first glance. Once he finally saw one, he slowed to a stop in front of it. "I really hope they take credit cards. I don't exactly have a wallet full of Euro, you know? What do you like to eat?" He looked over the menu, really more in the mood for a salad and some soup, and nothing fancy. Luckily for him, it looked like a lunch cafe, and didn't go in for much in the way of fancy dinners. The scent of fresh bread wafted from the inside of the restaurant.

"What place doesn't? And I eat pretty much everything. When my kids were here, you kind of get used to eating on the run. Whatever they don't finish, you eat it standing up over the sink." She laughed, and then laughed louder when her tummy growled. "And neither of us have regional accents, we're good." Mary tended to have a calming effect on everyone anyway, so she wasn't surprised when they were seated right away.

"I hear you there. I basically survived on fast food and bags of chips and funyons since I can remember. It's a wonder I haven't had a heart attack yet," Sam said with a lopsided smile, pulling out Mary's chair for her before sitting down, himself. He wasn't really thinking about manners, but the few he had, he managed to adhere to strongly. Taking a seat facing the door, Sam looked over the menu, which, while having halfassed English translation, made him pull a completely baffled face. "I don't think I've been this confused by a menu since going down to Mexico," he laughed.

"Ew, Funyouns." Mary wrinkled her nose, and scanned the menu to see what was on there that she recognized. There wasn't much, so she figured she'd have the waiter order for her. The way he sat with his back to the wall, looking at the door, she wondered what he'd been fighting before. Army? Navy?

"Hey, don't knock them. All those preservatives probably will keep me fresh looking years after death," he said with a smirk, before shaking his head at the menu, "The special it is," he said with resignation, setting the menu down just as their waiter came to fill their glasses with water and ask for their drink orders. He ordered 'whatever beer is on tap', and then smiled sheepishly at Mary, who'd been looking at him questioningly since he sat down and took a cursory glance at the door. "What?" he asked, darting his eyes.

"It's better than embalming fluid!" She grinned up at the waiter when he came over, beaming. "Can I get a glass of house red and whatever you think will go best with that?" She put her hair up as the waiter left, smiling at Sam. "Old habits dying hard for you."

"Yeah," Sam said with a sheepish chuckle. "Better safe than sorry, I suppose. Not that keeping your back to a wall is very safe when what you're hunting goes through them," he said offhandedly as one possibly could, "but most things are fairly corporeal, so it's good practice. It's actually kind of a wonder that I don't have even a pocketknife on me right now, too. I actually feel kind of naked without one."

She blinked. "I kind of guessed you were in the Army or the Marines. I guess you could use a steak knife? What were you hunting?" Her eyes were wide, but not from fear of the things, from fear for him. SHe didn't like the idea of him being hurt.

"Stuff that most people don't believe exists but does. Ghosts, monsters, demons. Stuff like that. Bigfoot isn't real, but yowees are, and skinwalkers, shapeshifters, wendigos. You name it, we've probably crossed paths with it," he said with a shrug. "I figure it's all right to tell you since you, y'know, you're not new here and you know weird stuff happens in other places. Here, too, from what people tell me."

"Oh, most of that is real here." She chuckled and took a sip of her water. "You don't scare me at all, I think you're very brave, actually. I can't imagine saving people who don't think they need to be saved." She chewed her lower lip.

"It's pretty thankless," admitted Sam with a sigh and a shake of his head, "and usually it wasn't me getting thanked by whatever pretty girl we were saving. But honestly, it's better than letting those things terrorize the world. If we didn't, it'd be a lot less safe, I suppose, but growing up into the life's... well." He shook his head and then thanked the waiter who had approached with their drinks. He ordered the soup du jour, and a medium salad to go with. "I wouldn't recommend it or even wish it on my worst enemy. Hunting isn't for people who have something to lose, or ambitions beyond death."

"It's a truly good man who does a thankless job and thinks it's necessary to do it at all." She smiled when her wine came, sipping it cautiously in case it was too strong. It wasn't, and her eyes fluttered closed contentedly. "It sounds odd, but I hope you get both of those things here - something to lose, and better ambitions."

"We always had something driving us," Sam said, "Back there," he refused to call it home, since 'home' was a concept that eluded Sam these days, "we were trying to find a way to get Dean out of a deal. He only had a few months left. Before that, we were trying to kill Yellow Eyes. Before that... well. There is no 'before that', that's what started it all for us. And it wasn't looking very good anyway. But yeah, I hope you're right. There needs to be something better for me out there. I don't even know where to begin looking for it. I'm sure there's something, but after all the shit that we've been through for the past couple years," he sipped his beer and shook his head. "It's hard to get out of that mentality of day-to-day."

Sam looked over at her with a small smile, "What are you hoping for? Maybe getting an outside perspective might help."

"Well, right now, you just need to get used to this place. Once you get used to things, maybe then you can get comfortable." She cocked her head, trying to think about what she hoped for. "I just try to be happy. And that's a lot harder than most people think, but at the same time, it's not a huge thing. I was happy when I woke up this morning because my cat was on my pillow, eating my hair. I'm happy now, that bread smells good. I'm happy with you, because I love new friends."

He didn't have to think very hard about that philosophy to see it was a really nice one. "That's a great way to live," he agreed, smiling over at her. "I've got to admit, I haven't been this at ease for a long time, myself. Thanks for that. I mean, being able to pick up and go anywhere on the map is a pretty awesome thing, even for me. Especially for me. And to do it in as good of company as you are, it's hard to deny that everyone's right. This place really is a great place."

She blushed brightly. "Well, she is a really cute cat. She's only got one eye and one ear, she just started sleeping on my fire escape." But she caught the gravity of his words, and really hoped that she could attribute the blush to the wine. That was it. Not his smile at all. His teeth were perfect, and stunningly white, and oh, his eyes were green.

How long had it been since she'd been on a date with a human? Not that this was a date, but the answer was never. She'd never been on a date with a human. And when the waiter came to bring their food, she thanked him profusely, having never been so grateful in her whole life for an interruption.

She was blushing and Sam couldn't help but pick up on that right away. He smiled sheepishly at it, and looked down at his food once it was brought to the table, murmuring a nervous 'merci', before spreading vinegar dressing on the top of the salad. "Sounds like she needed a good home. I'm glad she found you; you seem like just what she needs. I took in a dog once, when I ran away as a kid. He was a really good guy, too, I think he was a golden retriever? I named him Lucky. Dad wouldn't let me keep him, though, so we gave him to Bobby to care for. Lucky protected the heck out of the scrap yard." He smiled at the memory. He loved that dog like mad, and was pissed off to that very day that he couldn't keep him as a pet. It wasn't like they were lacking in room in the Impala, or at the hotels they lived in. It would have been a great change of pace from the TV and Dean bossing him around all the time.
Ah well, shit happens.

He looked up at her and couldn't help but grin again. She was still looking awkward and cute and shy. "So what do you want to see first once we get there? I kind of hope they have Michelangelo's stuff all in one place, and we don't have to go searching around for it."
