"Oh, it was?" She smiled, but the smile soon broke into a sad little frown when he mentioned what he'd gone through. "That's ... more than anyone should have to handle, no wonder you're so wary of things." She reached out to squeeze his hand, wishing that he'd not had to endure any of that. He was sweet, anyone could see that. But it explained why he looked so ill at ease, why he looked like a skittish colt.
