WHO: Jean Grey & River Tam
WHEN: Saturday Night
WHAT: Defending London from the Uruk Hai
WHY: Because screw you logic, that's why

It had been way too long since Jean had flown.

It had also been a long time since she had used her Phoenix gifts to light enemies on fire, but that was far less enjoyable. When this was over, whatever this was, she'd have to make a point of doing it more.

But first, there was work to be done. Some of it was merely ridiculous, like the giant rabbits and singing plants. But vampires and werewolves and these strange goblin men she faced now were terrifying.

Or would be, if she was a different woman. This destruction and terror just made her angry. Very angry.

A girl wearing a light blue dress walked silently through the streets. Her head was tilted and her gaze steady, and her barefoot feet stepped toe to heel, toe to heel, as though processing. There was chaos all around her, but she regarded it with vague curiosity and slight confusion rather than fear.

Swooping down on the pack of the goblins, Jean had a vague flicker of recognition from stories she had read as a child. They were goblin men in the most literal sense. What was the name?

Uruk hai. That was it.

It didn't matter, she thought as she set one aflame. They'd die just the same.

Fire, up ahead. Fire attracted. Poor little moths drawn to their glowing deaths.

Darker things were around her, running away from the fire in search of easier prey. Like the mermaid with the bare feet. Walking on knives. But her feet didn't hurt, even if she was out of her element.

One of them smirked, growling, holding up an axe.

River regarded him. Not out of her element then. She knew this dance. When he stepped forward, clearly expecting her to turn and run, she side-stepped, kicked him with a dancer's kick, directed force, find the weakest spot. Under the neck, winding him so he staggered backwards. Another ran forward and she ducked, sweeping his legs out so he fell sprawling, his short sword clattering to the ground.

River picked it up and started to dance.

Jean fought with anger, which was always dangerous. Just because the Phoenix had remained quiet since her arrival was no guarantee that she would remain that way, especially with Jean consumed by rage.

At the moment, she couldn't worry about that though. There were children here, like the one without shoes...

Through the haze of battle, it took Jean a moment to focus enough on the girl to realize what was really going on. Looking at the girl caused her psychic pain. There was so much confusion, razor sharp and almost difficult to get past.

And the girl could fight. The goblin men fell in droves around her even as the ones around Jean stopped struggling under the flames.

That. That. What was that? That was more than fire. That was a star being born, coalesed, captured, infinite, embodied. And it'd reached for her. It'd reached for her. Deliberately. With intent. Not all-encompassing, though it could all-encompass, did she know what she carried, what drove her? Did River?

River hacked and slashed her way through the Uruk-hai, mindless, made of violence, silence them quick and get them out of her head, stab this one with that one's sword, cartwheel back out of the way of that one, hit exactly the right spot to make that one stumble into the next, behead both, take the axe, keep dancing towards the fire.

Jean stood still, the enemies around her wreathed in flame.

Just looking at the girl was like looking at an uncut diamond. So much potential, but so much danger for the wrong cut to destroy it all.

And she had been cut so many times already.

"Are you hurt?" It was a pointless question. She was very aware this girl had suffered pain that even she might not be able to fathom.

The last one fell before she answered. There were only a few of the Uruk-hai left near them, the ones Jean was holding in place, living pyres. Not living for much longer. River stopped, pirouetting, looking at the woman curiously. "Loneliness burns more than fire," she said, matter-of-fact.

Cryptic. Unsettling. And clearly a psychic.

Jean calmly put a block up, letting her aura subside. She wasn't sure how to communicate with the girl, and she was equally sure there was time to try.

There were more Uruk hai where the others had come from and they were heading towards the two women.

River swayed as the flood of fire-edged infinity suddenly...vanished. Blocked off. There was a hole in her awareness. Other things crowded out the hole, other information, information was everywhere and it flooded her, but the hole belonged to the phoenix, and she wanted to know how it was done, how she could do it, become a hole and drop through herself into somewhere quiet.

River stepped out of the way as one of the oncoming Uruk-hai lifted a bow, took aim, and fired at the back of her head. She was still staring at Jean.
