who. Carrie Kelley and Doug Ramsey
what. Some talk, some crime fighting, and a new costume. Woo!
when. Later tonight
where. NY

Dick had found Bruce. Carrie didn't know any details. She didn't know what shape Bruce was in or where Dick had found him. As much as she tried to tell herself it didn't matter, it did. As much as she didn't want to care, she did. After a day of waiting for some news, she found herself unable to wait any longer. She was too restless and angry to just sit around and wait.

"Fuck it," Carrie said, picking herself up off the couch, grabbing some gear, and running out of the apartment.

Ten minutes later, she was speeding down the street on her motorcycle - which was between paint jobs and looking a bit uglier than normal. She ignored the lights and speed limits, only taking care in slowing because of sharp turns and bumps in the road. Carrie was still carrying a few bruises and wounds from nights of training.

She stopped at Doug's, hopping off her bike and jogging into the building. She knocked on the door and the electric voice of his butler welcomed her inside. "Hey Doug?" Carrie said, peeking in before taking a step inside his home. "It's me. You here?"

It looked great. Carrie wanted more than anything to try it on and jump off some rooftops. "Thank you for this," Carrie said, approaching again. She took the mask and looked it over. Just like everything else, it appeared simple but there was a lot of tech hidden on the back.

"Huh? Eat? No." There was a pause. "I'm not going to go crazy tonight. I just need..." She hesitated. "Dick found Bruce." She looked down. "I just need to go out."

"I may not be very useful out there, but I can do this, and I like being useful."

He blushed.

Then he fixed her with an eye, both understanding and worried.

"I'm sorry, Carrie. That's great and ouchie news, all at the same time. Just, be careful out there, okay? You're good, and I want you to be able to come back and tell me what needs fixing or adjusting, and all, when you are done."

He hoped she would know when to stop. Nothing he could do to stop her, but he hoped.

"If you need anything, just holler. I'll have my ear on."

He picked up a small blackberry looking device and hooked it to his ear, a little light glowing to life as he did so.

"It's fine," Carrie said, jaw a little tight. It wasn't fine. She knew this and so did Doug, but she wasn't in the mood to talk feelings. "I haven't even seen him. I think they're still traveling. Or maybe they're at the manor. I don't care." She ran a hand through her hair, pushing bangs aside and giving Doug a view of a healing cut on her forehead. Since Bruce had left, she'd managed to get herself a lot more injured than normal. It'd been mostly due to the fact that she overworked herself - partially to prove herself tough without Batman, partially to keep her mind on things that weren't Bruce.

"I'll be fine. I'll test some things and hit some bad guys. You'll be keeping an eye on me the whole time, right? It'll be great."

She took the costume. "Just give me a minute to change." She walked into a different room, stripped down, and returned in costume. The mask wasn't yet fixed on her face. She was smiling. "How's it look?"

He nodded, knowing when to back off a little.

"Okay."

He watched her, then grinned a little.

"I'll be here, eyes wide and ears listening."

When she came back in, his eyes went wide and his mouth went dry. Well, that was a good look, wow...

"Uhm..."

His voice was hoarse and he coughed, cleared his throat and nodded.

"You look magnificent, and like you could kick Thanos's ass."

He shook his head.

"I was hoping it would look like that."

He flicked a switch and a hologram popped into being of her, as she was now, costume and all. She looked fierce to him, dark and almost sexy, all that the same time. Wow.

"It feels a little..." Carrie pulled at the collar. She just wasn't used to skin-tight costumes. As Robin, she'd gone out with legs exposed and with her top covered up with a vest. Now it was like she was going out in spandex. Not much was left to the imagination. Carrie figured it'd take a few outings before she felt completely comfortable. "Are you checking me out?" She asked suddenly, small grin on her face. "Don't get all pervy on me." She sounded amused.

She put her mask on, pressing an invisible button on it to test different visions. "Thermal. Night vision. Nice." She made sure the mask wasn't going to just fall off. Then she checked her gauntlets. "Lines are in here, right?" She asked this while holding up her wrist. "Oh! Oh! And the claws!" She flexed her hand and claws sprouted out of fingertips. "This is just fucking cool."

He went scarlet!

"I'm not! You are magnificent, Carrie, or should I say, Catgirl."

He grinned, still red, and nodded.

"Everything is there. Despite conforming to your body, it ought to keep your warm without making you feel too hot. I got an idea for adding big claws to the boot soles but I want to work on the design and release mechanism before they get added, if you like them."

He nodded and flicked his comlink, and switched to a almost subvocalized tone that came out just normal speech on her com earplugs as he handed them over.

"These are standard. Hard to dislodge, except on purpose by you, and able to scan the frequencies for emergencies if you want."

Carrie grinned. From time to time, it was a lot of fun to embarrass Doug. "Yeah, I know." She ran a hand through her hair again before taking the earplugs. "Thanks." She put them in each ear carefully. "Seriously, Doug. I owe you for this. This is ten times more advanced than anything I'd come up with by myself. Also, it's pretty."

She stretched once more, trying to get a little more comfortable. "Okay. I'm going to take off. The plan is rooftops and practice before I actually go looking for trouble."

Before she started for the stairs, she stopped before a mirror and looked herself over. She chuckled quietly, almost not recognizing herself. "I look like... an adult." She stared for another moment before shaking her head. "Weird. Okay." She turned back to Doug. "Time to try this thing out."

He blushed and shook his head.

"I just wanted to help."

Then he nodded.

"Be good out there. Kick some ass."

He grinned, and waved at her.

"Go forth and smite the wicked... or something."

He nodded as he turned and headed for the monitor room.

Carrie was out the door and on her bike in record breaking time. She felt energized with her new suit. There was something incredibly exciting about this. For once, she was her own hero. She wasn't Batman's sidekick. She had no real ties to Batman in this costume. That felt surprisingly good.

It was dark by the time Carrie had stopped her bike in an alley. A few stars were visible in the night's sky. It was cool, but not too cold. It was a good night for new beginnings. Carrie shot off her line and flipped on to the top of the building. "Catgirl to base," Carrie whispered in a dramatic voice. "You there, Oracle?"

Doug settled into his webbed chair in the minitor room, settleng back and controlling it with the gloves he wore, his whole bopdy and the chair on it moving as he activated the systems again, the chair rising to a position suyrroundd by tv, computer, and radio screens.

He grinned as he settled in and waited for her to call. When she did, his chuckle was quiet but audible.

"Oracle? Nah. I'm more of an eagle. Ears and eyes are hot, here. You are coming in loud and clear. Hows the run going?"

"We need a codename for you," Carrie said, punching and kicking invisible enemies. "Or I'm just going to start calling you papabear." There was a definite smirk in her voice. "It's going real good. It moves nice. I might have a wedgie," she added. "But it's all good."

The real test was to come, though. Carrie approached the building's edge. "This thing has the gliding wings that I showed you, right? How do I move to make them come out? Or do I have to press something special?"

He laughed quietly as he nodded.

"If you call me papabear, I am calling you kittybabe."

He grinned as he heard her report.

"We can redesign to keep that from happening. That is part of tonight. Put it all through it's paces and tell me what sucks. Even atomic wedgies."

Yep. Wings are in place. Thumb to thumb, to snap them out, thumb to little finger to shut them, either hand will do it."

"Don't call me kittybabe," Carrie laughed. She tried out the wings while standing on solid ground. "This is so cool," she said, mostly to herself.

"Alright." After the third try, Carrie stopped playing and stood up straight. "Do I want to run off the building or just drop? Should I try both? I'm looking to not kill myself tonight." If the wings failed, of course, she had her line. But Carrie didn't want to have to use that unless absolutely necessary.

"Roger wilco, Catgirl. And a few steps will help, like a running leap, but you don't need anything more than a couple."

He watched his readouts and listened to her and hoped all would stay well.

If he was monitoring her heart rate, he'd definitely notice a spike. Carrie loved this, even lived for this sort of thing. That didn't mean it wasn't scary. "Kay. Here goes." She took a very deep breath and then, without much warning, took off at a run.

She went over the edge, easily. For a moment, Carrie felt like she was sailing. It was a peaceful feeling, just falling like this. And then, her brain kicked in. There was a moment of blind panic that always accompanied a fall and then she did as Doug had instructed, touching her thumbs. The wings protruded and Carrie held her arms out to catch a breeze.

This was the first time she'd done anything like this. Because of this, she moved jerkily through the air. "Oh shit oh shit." She was doing it. And then she moved the wrong way, lost the wind and started to fall. "Crap." She sounded surprisingly calm. Within a few seconds, the wings were gone and Carrie was pointing her wrist at a building. She caught herself with a line and breathed out shakily. Hanging off the side of a building, she laughed. "That could have gone a little better."

He grinned.

"Lemme guess, panic attack? Don't worry. You will get it. You're good."

Which did not mean his heart had not hammered at his chest and his stomach had not been in his mouth.

"Not a panic attack," she said. "Well. For a half second, but I'm used to falling. I just turned my arm the wrong way. Lost the wind. I will get it." She sounded absolutely sure of that. "But I'll probably be lining for a while." She grinned.

In a few minutes, she was back on the top of a building. "Let's do that one more time." Carrie was nothing if not stubborn. With a deep breath, she took off and jumped off the building. She did the same thing she'd done before, but kept much more aware of the placement of her arms. She whooped loudly as she made it down a street, still moving jerkily, but never dropping.

By the end of the block, she retracted the wings and lined to another rooftop. "Okay. That was the best thing ever." She hopped around a little, still riding a wave of adrenaline.

"Sticking with what you know is always good."

He nodded, even if she could not see it.

He listened with bated breath as she tried again, and as she flew. Then whooped too!

"Bravo! Good job!"

He laughed and saved the video from nearby security cams, then wiped them and replaced them with nothing happening footage, which he kept the Grotto's copy of footage for her to see later.

"Thanks." She beamed. "Okay. Ready to fight some idiots? I'm totally ready to fight some idiots." Carrie had forgotten some of her bruises and wounds. Nothing was hurting like it had before. This was just more proof that crime fighting was what she was meant to do. Little else could get her jazzed like this.

"Let's go cruising," she said, grinning. "If you get any...um... alerts? Do you have any police radios on you? If you do, give me a shout about what's going on nearby. I want to try and start small. If nothing's coming up on the radar, I'll find something." There was always something to find in this city.

"You're the one out there. If you are ready, I am ready."

He grinned as he settled back and began rapidly scanning.

"I have almost everything on... "

He scanned around and nodded as he found something.

"Four blocks away, an attempted mugging has turned into a small firefight with one police officer and two criminals. Units are rolling but five minutes out."

"This thing bulletproof?" She asked as she lined down the streets. She turned a corner and could hear the sound of gunshots below.

Two guys with guns weren't something Carrie couldn't handle. It'd been a while since she'd been out on the street, but she could handle this. She took a deep breath and landed on a fire escape. She scanned the scene before doing anything else. There was a cop shooting at the two criminals but it wasn't looking good for him. The thugs wanted to get away. And it looked like they were willing to kill to do so. "They're close together. I think I can drop on them. It should be enough to knock a gun or two away. So," she said, "it'll be fine." She wanted to reassure him before just jumping onto the scene.

"Yes it is. Smoke pellets and oil pellets can be fired as well to help things slide your way."

He dropped his voice.

"You can do this. You are good, they are not expecting you, and you are fast. Rock the house, Catgirl."

Carrie moved down the escape silently. She needed to get low enough that the jump down wouldn't hurt her. It was important she didn't catch the thugs' attention, as she wasn't really in the mood to be shot at tonight. Thankfully, they were too distracted. And it didn't hurt that she blended into the night.

Carrie jumped over the fire escape's edge and landed between the two thugs. Her foot came down on one's shoulder. She hit the second as soon as she landed. He reeled and Carrie managed to pull the gun out of his hand. She tossed the thing over her shoulder, in the cop's direction. She threw a hard punch and the guy doubled over. "I'll get back to you in a sec," she said. That was one guy disarmed.

The first, the one she'd landed on, was just coming to his senses as Carrie turned her attention to him. He pointed his gun at her and she quickly dodged. "Gimme that," she growled, bringing her hand down on his wrist in a swift, chopping motion. He shouted and dropped the thing quickly. He wouldn't be using that hand for a while. Carrie kicked him hard at the right spot and he went down.

Just then the second guy grabbed her from behind. Carrie felt a hand go around her throat. She kicked herself for being slow. She was better than this. "Gotcha, Catwoman," the guy said in her throat. Carrie grit her teeth. She didn't like that.

She brought a foot down on his knee and his grip loosened. It took a second to twist out of his grasp. "Catwoman? Seriously?" Carrie sounded annoyed. "Do I look like Catwoman? Don't answer that," she said quickly. "Have you ever seen Catwoman? She has breasts like you wouldn't believe. She's got to have D's or DD's. Me? I'm a b-cup on a lucky day. Let's open our eyes here, asshole."

"Huh?" Her assailant looked extremely confused.

"I'm Catgirl and I'm new. I'd take it as a kindness if you could spread my name around. I'm the five-foot-nothing, hundred pound girl that totally kicked your ass." With that, she brought her fists and feet flew. She beat him up for a few seconds and then twisted his hand behind his back. "Hey officer," Carrie called. "Got a present for you. I'd appreciate it if you didn't shoot at me."

Doug was tapping away as he watched from sky eyes and watched local units.

She did great and he breathed okay as she got loose.

"Excellent. By the way, units are almost there. One of them reads as a trigger finger. Making yourself scarce soonest would be good."

He glanced at readouts, checking everything and tapped a few more commands, his system slowly connecting and telling little computers what to do.

"You have a clear path to the south, and I will keep it that way."

Carrie almost nodded at Doug's words but then remembered that he wouldn't be able to see the gesture. The cop who'd been down the alley came running over, glancing Carrie up and down. She was in the process of cuffing one of the thugs with a plastic set of cuffs she had around her waist.

"Vigilantism is illegal, you know," the cop said. Thankfully, he didn't sound as though he was about to enforce this rule.

"I'm just doing my part," Carrie said with a little shrug. "You can take all the credit if you want." She glanced down the street and almost swore she heard sirens. "You can handle it from here, right ace?" There was a pause. "Are you checking out my ass?"

The cop didn't respond, choosing to shuffle around on his feet at he handcuffed the guy she'd knocked out.

Carrie scoffed ("Men.") and pressed a button on her wrist. Her bike came rolling down and she hopped on. She rode down in the direction Doug had pointed her in. "Thanks for the help, Mr. Universe," she said, grinning.
