Despite the danger he knew could await him, Tony wasn't about to leave Pepper there for something else to come along and get her. He was closer than the other version of him, and even if he was already halfway here, he could get to her first. He owed her so much more, but this was just a start for his atonement. When he arrived at the hospital, he found her lying on the ground, curled up in pain with a strange tattoo covering portions of her body. Landing next to her, his faceplate retracted and Tony stared down at her as he attempted to get her up from the ground. He wasn't sure if his suit would protect him or if he'd even be able to move her. "Pepper...Pepper, it's me...I'm here to take you to the mansion...."

In the mean time, the other Tony had went off frantically in search of the one who'd attacked Pepper. He had been intending to make it pay, but instead it had gotten him in the end. He was flying off now to find her, and he could <i>feel</i> Extremis in his body trying to fight this off whatever it was. He was in pain, but it was battling the pain while repairing parts of his armor midflight. He thought he had made it out clear, but then a strong sharp jolt of pain shot through him just as he got near the hospital, and bits of his armor began to fall off. First the repulsors flickers, trying to go offline, then his gauntlets fell off and the undersuit had retracted back into his body. Tony was falling fast, and the next thing he realized, he was crashing to the ground a few feet from his other self and Pepper.

He was yelling at her, and she wanted to yell back but didn't have the heart. Or maybe it just hurt too bad. "He has it too? The tattoo?" she swallowed. "We're both going to die.." god why didn't he ever listen to her? Neither of them did. She couldn't do anything but lie there in his arms and wait for the helicopter to come and take them both inside.

As they got into the helicopter she just wanted to ignore the pain and go to help the other Tony. She didn't know what she could do for him, but she wanted to make sure that .. well just to see him.

Once he'd loaded them in, he instructed the pilot to take them back to Stark Mansion and that he was going to fly ahead to get things ready. With that, Tony's helmet closed and he took off into the sky towards home. He didn't even want to look at the two of them, especially her gushing over the other him. It made him sick in the pit of his stomach.

There was nothing Pepper could do for him. He was cold, and his body was reacting bad to the curse and tattoo. Some portions of the tattoo would disappear when the nanotech repaired the skin only to have it reappear. He was probably in more pain than her with the Extremis virus inside of him. He'd curled onto his side, his eyes clutched closed tightly with the blanket wrapped around his waist to cover him.

Looking at Tony, she wasn't quite sure if he even could hear her or know what was going on or anything, but she remained by his side, curling up against him slightly. "I'm here.. I'm here.." she was shaking, there was so much pain, but he looked worse off and she didn't know what she could do for him especially like this. She would be crying if there hadn't been so much pain coursing through her body.

She didn't know why the other Tony hated them so much, but she didn't want to ask.

Remy was at the house in New York, having made it perfectly clear to Sophie that she wasn't allowed to go out of the house until all of this was done, and that she meant it. She was taking care of Edward and hoping that they would get back there soon. She was worried, and scared and slightly annoyed that he'd gone rushing off to help Pepper. But then, he rushed off and helped a lot of people.

"Sorry...she got me...." which was the most he could say as he managed to put his arm around her and drew her as close as he could. If they were going to die, he'd rather it be together than for one to be behind because he wouldn't live without her.

The other Tony didn't hate them so much as he was jealous because she was still his Pepper in his head, but she hated him, rejected him only to shack up with another version of him. He was still confused about all of it.

Tony arrived at Stark Mansion well before the copter, Jarvis working to take his suit off so he could change into regular clothing and get upstairs to meet them. Then he found Remy with Edward, both of which he kissed. "She's cursed. So is he. The helicopter is bringing them here, but they can't infect us. I've touched them both."

She shook her head, "I told you.. I'm so sorry.." she whispered at him and curled up as close as she could to him. She barely kissed his lips and shut her eyes, her fingers clutching into a fist as the tattoo continued to grow up both of them. She never meant for him to get hurt like this. But she wouldn't want him to have to live if she died, she couldn't imagine living without him either.

Remy on the other hand greeted her Tony, and blinked. "Are you sure? Just because you.. touched them doesn't mean.. you know mad cow disease lies dormant for ten years and no one knows you have it for that long.." she looked a little worried still. "Do you want me to look over them? See if there's anything I can do?" mostly she hated feeling useless, especially when people were in pain.

"I don't think that's how it's spread. His body is reacting very weird to it. The blue tattoo keeps disappearing and reappearing whereas hers just grows and spreads. I'm not sure what this is." Tony didn't care as much about his other self, but he did care about Pepper's well-being. But he knew how much he meant to her, and if saving him mattered to her, then he'd try.

"Please check them out. I can watch Edward while you're in with them. It should be landing shortly with them," and just then Jarvis alerted them that the helicopter hand landed on the launchpad. They'd have to get them inside, so Tony went out to meet them, first taking Pepper up in his arms while the pilot and another servant grabbed Tony and carried him inside to an empty bedroom Tony had directed them to. Once in there, both were laid out on the bed with the blanket pulled up around them, and he took a step back for her to do her thing as he took Edward out of her arms. "Just be careful."

"I have no idea what it is.. it doesn't come off right?" well obviously if it was a tattoo. "It's not actual ink though.. definitely not. Great. Just great.." she nodded her head and passed Edward over to her husband when he got back with both Pepper and the other Tony. It was a little surreal seeing him there, but she shook it off. She could get over the weirdness.

"I'll figure out what's going on.. or try to.." she told him and then went to go get her medical bag from the other room and then went into the room where they had put Pepper and the other Tony. The two didn't like each other, but that didn't mean she wanted Pepper to die. "Can you tell me what happened exactly Pepper? And why.. he's reacting like that?" she looked over at Tony and then back at Pepper.

Pepper was shaking, even if she wasn't cold. "I was coming out of the hospital and then this.. woman.. she was there. She was.. she was a ghost.. I know that sounds.. but I got in her way. She grabbed me on the arm and then took me by the other arm and held me up and then just.. tossed me onto the ground. That's when this appeared.." she gestured to her feet. It was up to her knees now. "He.. the extremis virus... must be blocking.. it.. the.. whatever this is.."

Tony was fairly unresponsive, even with the movement and talking around him. He just lay there, his body trembling slightly and a thin sheen of perspiration covering his body. The Extremis was trying to kill whatever this was spreading through him, though each time the tattoo reappeared, it had spread further on his body.

The other, still bouncing a wide awake Edward in his arms, stepped forward to really look at his other self for the first time. There were slight differences with the facial hair and length of their own hair, skin tone and build, but it was like watching himself die. Then he looked over at Pepper, and he felt helpless because he couldn't do a thing for either one of them.

"I watched his undersuit sink inside of his body like it evaporated. I've never seen anything like that." By now, Tony had crouched down next to the bed to examine his exposed arms. Edward, seeing the man who closely resembled his father, waved his little arms at the unconscious Tony on the bed wanting him to hold him. "No, Edward, he's not yours."

Remy checked both of them out as best as she could, "They're both.. fine.. I mean they're not obviously but everything seems to be okay and fine except.." she trailed off. "Their organs are failing." she picked up Pepper's hand, which was almost all blue by now. "That.. thing.. this.. whatever it is, it's going to kill them.. I.."

She gave a small sigh and rubbed her head. "The only thing we can do is make them comfortable and hope.. maybe that whatever it is inside him is strong enough to beat out this other thing.. I'm not sure if taking them to the hospital and putting them up to an IV would even.. prolong anything.."

Finally she looked back over at Tony, "Do you.. want.. them to stay here?"

All he could do was watch. And stare. And wait. The worst part was that he believed part of this was his fault for not having protected her, the other part he blamed on his other self for not having followed her here to keep her safe. It seemed like no matter what, Tony Stark was destined to fail Pepper Potts.

"Yes," he said without hesitation. "If there is nothing that can be done, let them stay. I'd rather her be here than anywhere else." Where he could keep an eye on her at least. He shifted the baby in his arms and rocked him to get him to quiet down.

She had no desire to sit there and watch her husband die, or at least the man that looked just like her husband. It was unnatural and wrong, but she was a doctor, and so she thought she should be there. And be there for Tony. She knew that he cared about Pepper of course, she couldn't really change that, and she wanted to be there for him more then anything.

"Okay.." she told him, putting her hand on his shoulder. Pepper had kind of faded into unconsciousness this time, she barely heard what was going on around her either. The pain was overwhelming and only giving into the unconsciousness seemed to get her to stop shaking. The tattoo continued to grow up over her thighs. "I'd say.. by tomorrow maybe? Or tonight.. I don't know.."

Slipping one arm around Remy's waist, Tony drew her closer and kissed her, though he watched Pepper out of the corner of his eye. They looked so...statuesque with the way they were positioned, the solemn look on his other self's face letting him know that he was going to never wake up. Glancing from Pepper to Remy and back, Tony took a deep breath and slowly let it out. "Will you hold him for me? I just...I need to say something to her," and he held Edward out for Remy to take.

Tony walked over to the bed and crouched down next to it near Pepper's head, his hand coming out to push her hair back from her face. She was like a shadow of the woman he knew, and he had to choke back a tear that threatened to fall before he leaned in close to her. Even though he knew Remy might still be in the room watching, Tony kissed Pepper on the forehead first, then nuzzled her cheek before he put his mouth at her ear.

He didn't know if she could hear him or not, but he needed to say this right now because he knew he would never get a chance to say it again. "I'm sorry I didn't do the right thing and wait for you. I'm sorry I didn't protect you and marry you and gave you all of the children you deserve. I'm sorry I didn't love you like I should have. But I love you, Pepper. Forever and always," every bit whispered just so only she could hear it. He moved and kissed her head once more before standing up from the bedside and wiped away the tears with the back of his hand.

When Remy had taken Edward from Tony's arms and let him go over to Pepper, she left the room because that was something she didn't want to watch, or hear or contemplate in any fashion. She went to go change her kid's diaper and try and distract herself from however it was that she was feeling.

Pepper hadn't really moved when Tony came over, not giving any indication that she knew he was there that was until he had spoken to her. After he was done, her eyes fluttered open for a moment and she looked up at him. She looked like she wanted to say something maybe, but her lips didn't really move. Then her eyes shut again and this time she didn't wake.

Her body went kind of limp, and her heart slowed all the way until it stopped. The tattoo continued to slide up her body, taking over every inch.

His jaw visibly tensed as he watched her die, and it was like he was on autopilot, as he sat down on the bed and pulled her into his lap. He cradled her close to him, her entire body covered in the blue tattoo, her head on his shoulder as he just held her. No matter what, she was his Pepper, too, even if the other had laid claim to her heart. As he hugged her, he tucked her head underneath his chin and stroked her hair lightly, his head tilted where he could keep his eye on the other Tony. By now, when the tattoo reappeared each time, it was practically covering every inch of him that he could see, and he could see muscle spasms and facial ticks letting him know that Extremis was doing its best to heal him but was failing miserably.

The other Tony took one last deep breath, and his chest fell one more time,letting him know he'd met the same fate as his lover. The three of them reminded him sickly of a Shakespearean layout, the two husks of the lovers draped over the bed with the evil lord mourning the passing of the one he loved.

After hearing something from the other room, she peeked her head into the room and saw Tony cradling Pepper. They were dead apparently. She felt sick to her stomach, and she really didn't want Edward to see any of this, so she went to see if Sophie would watch him for a while and then came back to them. She went over and put her hand on Tony's shoulder, not knowing what else to do.

She had to do this with her father when their mother had died. Just stand there and put her hand on him and not know what else to do. She was bad at this part. She never wanted Pepper to die. "I'm sorry.." she told him.

"So am I," he said. He looked as though he were fifty years older, deep lines in his face as he got up from the bed, sliding Pepper gently out of his lap and settling her closer to the other. At least they were together was all he could think. "I'll....once this is over, I'll arrange for something to be done with them." Then he thought about something as he slipped his hands in his pockets, staring at the two of them. "I wonder if you die here, do you go back to your timeline? Maybe she's happy even if she had to suffer so much here."

But he couldn't look at the two of them any longer and so he turned away, then wrapped his arm around Remy's waist. "We'll lock the door behind us. I don't want anyone near this room until I figure out what to do." Maybe it was weird he was clinging to them like this, but she was still his friend and he owed them a decent burial or whatever.

Remy nodded her head a little, "I think so yeah.. I.. was talking to Claire once.. the girl that healed you up? She said .. she died once.. months ago.. I didn't ask how or whatever but.. she said.. she.. woke back up home. She was there for months maybe, years.. and then.. she woke up back here.. but only a couple of hours had passed here.." she explained. She didn't think it was weird that he was clinging, really anyone would if someone had died.

"Yeah all right, let's go.." she trailed off. She was watching the two of them and something was going on. Whatever it was, it was bad because they seemed to be transforming. Glowing. But transparent. Like.. ghosts. "Shit.." her eyes were wide, "We have to go.. right now.." she tugged on him.

As she tugged on his shirt, he turned around just in time to see his other self's physical body glow just as brightly as staring into a fluorescent bulb. "Damn it!" he yelled and grabbed her by the hand to rush off towards Edward's room. "What the hell is going on now?" The two of them were in Edward's room as Sophie played with him, keeping him occupied while his parents were dealing with the deaths, but Tony burst in, "Time to go! We've gotta get out of here. Remy, you take Sophie and Edward down to the shop, get the Audi and get out of here. I'm suiting back up and going back out there." The look of determination to make this thing pay for all of this burned in his eyes.

They ran out of the room and down the hall towards where Sophie and Edward were. She scooped up Edward and then stopped, "Wait.. you can protect him better then I can.. Tony.. you can't do anything for them.. you can't.. what if they're contagious .. we have to get out of here. Together. Right now.." though she kept a hold of Edward as they left the room. They would have to get things for him later. "They're coming.. shit.. go go.." she pushed them both out of the room.

Tony took the baby into his arms, clutching the now crying child to his chest as all the commotion upset him. "We've got to get downstairs. We don't know how fast they move or what they can do." Fuck, his brain was racing as he tried to think of something that could be done. He didn't want to have to kill Pepper, but she was going to kill all of them if he didn't stop her. Tony ran down the small winding staircase into the basement, everyone in tow behind him as he fumbled for his car keys. He'd have to leave Jarvis behind in the house with them.

Remy and Sophie followed suit down the flight of stairs as fast as they could and once Tony had opened the door, she got Sophie inside and then climbed in herself. "Just drive.." she'd put Edward in his car seat, managing to strap him in as they took off. The ghosts didn't seem to be following but they did seem to be tearing the place apart. She watched as the lights went dead in the house, but she could still see this weird eerie blue light. "Christ almighty.. um.. let's.. go to the hospital? Shit I don't know where to go.."

"The hospital was where I found her. They're all in that area. It's too dangerous to head there." His eyes flickered up to the rearview mirror to look at the house just as the lights died. Poor Jarvis. He hated having to abandon him to that unknown fate; he was just as much his companion as any of the others. "We should head to the hangar where my plane is. Fly out of here for the time being until it's all blown over. I don't want to risk anything happening to you or the children. They might not chase us, but there are others who are going to be in there who might."

Oh great. Of course they were at the hospital. "I think that place is on a Hellmouth.." she muttered. Really, the only explanation that she could give to the poor hospital. It had been completely ruined twice and now this? Plus all the times that those Silent Hill creatures attacked everyone. She finally sat back in her seat and nodded, "All right.. yeah.. sure.." she glanced over at him and then back out the window. She didn't want to be angry, it wasn't his fault.
