Sorry?

You don't know how much that means to me, Miniver.

Don't be sorry, I do that a lot.

And I think I have some idea.

I'm glad it's not only me, then.

Probably.

I hate being so emotional! So. 'Wimpy', as you say. There's a reason Ares feels about me the way he does.

Me too! At least, I think he does, or did, as of the last time I attracted his attention, which I do not care to do again.

I have very, very bad luck with gods here.

If I never have to see, hear, or speak of him again, it will be too soon.

Ares hates me, Mephisto wants to kill me, Antigone is no longer speaking to me... yes. I seem to as well.

I'd just as soon avoid them all.

Religion didn't do anything for me where I was born and I'd rather it didn't try here, you know?

I'm coming to that same conclusion.

Before I met Ares, I was a staunch atheist. As much as I'd like to remain at least agnostic, I can't. But that doesn't mean I want anything to do with anyone's religion. You and I are in complete agreement on that point.

Weren't you a car?

Do cars even have religion?

More correctly, I was - and still am, if you catch me in the right mood - an AI housed inside of a car.

I know who created me, how they created me, and for what purpose I was created. That's as much religion as I needed.

Really? Is that like... magic or something? You seemed pretty human to me...

No offense or anything, but I imagine it's easier when you're a machine with a purpose. No human in the world was ever born with a clear purpose and the innate ability to fulfill it. So they make up religion to give them answers. And then it doesn't give them answers, so they destroy it. And then they do it again.

I dunno, the religion I was born into says I'm going to hell anyway no matter what I do so it doesn't probably matter too much.

I made a deal with Ares, Miniver, even before I arrived here.

It was a lot easier. I knew what I was supposed to do. I knew who I was supposed to trust. I had confidence in my abilities. Ever since I was granted humanity, I've been floundering. Sometimes I wonder if it was all worth it. I can't fall back on religion, not even to destroy it.

What religion was that? Maybe you're better off without any.

ARES made you human? What kind of a deal was that??

Well, I grew up Catholic. You're not allowed to be gay when you're Catholic. They don't like it. You go straight to Hell, do not pass Go, do not collect $200...

Um, but I think being human's worth it, Kitt. If it matters any, I'm glad to have met you.

It was a bad one. Or a very good one, depending on one's point of view. It would take a lot of explaining either way. It... Ares has no respect for me because of this deal. Well, less respect than he had before I made it with him.

Oh. Yes. Unless you're a priest, from what I gather. Maybe that's where you went wrong, Miniver.

I'm sorry. That was rude of me. I didn't mean to be offensive.

I'm glad to have met you, too. I suppose there are some things about being human that I am rather fond of.

Well, I got time if you do. I always got time for stories.

Nah, that's hilarious. And kind of true, depending who you ask.

Well for one thing I think getting through doors is usually hard when you're a car. What kinda car are you anyway?

It's a long one. I met a girl online while I was still a car - a woman, really. A young woman. We got to talking, but I don't think either of us expected things to go as far as they did. Before I even realized what was happening, I had developed feelings for her - so much so that I defied my programming in order to meet with her. She had developed feelings for me as well. I hadn't told her I was a car. Long story short, we did meet up, she accepted me for what I was, and we spent several pleasant days together while I ignored my homing beacon and the calls from my caretakers. And I suppose at some point we were lamenting our fate. I don't know why, but somehow we caught Ares' attention. He wanted us to shut up, I think. Made me human for a day. Lost my virginity that fast. Found out she was pregnant from Ares, also that fast. He agreed to allow me to access my humanity whenever I wished - for a price. He wanted 24 hours with my young lady. I would have no part of it, so I offered myself instead. I wasn't his first choice, but after some wrangling he agreed.

Do not ever agree to be Ares' sex slave, Miniver. Trust me on that one. Just. Don't. There are no safe words.

I'm not very enamored of anyone claiming to be religious. I'm glad I didn't offend you.

I made my own doors. I'm a black 1982 Trans Am.

Okay, I can actually safely say that's the weirdest story I've ever heard, and I've heard some truly weird shit. It's just that none of them involved inanimate objects. Except these two where some wizard guy put part of his soul into various... things. But that ain't quite the same. The One Ring didn't have internet access. [Except in MESPT.]

...um. Dude, that's so many kinds of fucked up, I can't even count them. But damn, you must have really loved that girl.

I've never lived through 1982 in any world so I'm gonna have to look that one up.

I only wish I'd been inanimate at the time I was with Ares. I was fully human. For most of it. I would say I'm honored to have the weirdest story, except I wish I didn't. The One Ring? Tolkien? I don't know what MESPT is.

I loved her more than anything. I married her. That was my son. We almost had to give him up to Ares for warrior training, but he agreed to allow us to name him after him instead. It doesn't matter now. They're both gone anyway. I took my first drink shortly after that.

Maybe one day I'll show you.

The stuff that makes the best stories is almost never the stuff you want to be living through when you live it. Anyway those are from a book. There's a wizard and a quest and elves and stuff... It's really very good.

It does matter, Kitt. It'll always matter.

...and now it's my turn to be inappropriate and say that sounds kind of slightly dirty. Heh. But it'd be really cool, I've never seen a guy turn into a car before. Or turn back. (Do your clothes change too?)

This isn't a story that I'm particularly fond of, even so. It's bad enough to have to deal with Ares on the boards. Can you imagine him with his hands and... other... parts... all over you? Everywhere? I'm not saying that's bad, just that it was... Ares.

I'll have to read it someday, then. I haven't been reading as much as I'd like to, lately.

Thank you, Miniver.

The clothes stay the same, whatever I'm wearing at the time. I've only ever shown it to my ex-wife. It's very... personal. Which does make it sound dirty.
