Delia was terribly bored. Inclined to hang back in parties as she was, she usually did manage to snag herself at least one young man to keep her entertained, or perhaps a young lady that she could verbally pick apart, watching her as she tried not to burst into tears, but no one caught her eye. Or they had not yet, at least. If she could not find herself someone to save her from her boredom she would be forced to write off the entire evening as a loss, which would annoy her to no end as her occasional glances to her father and his whore told her they were having a good time. She loved her father, but he and his tart were not allowed to have a better time than she did. She decided she would have to be more proactive.

She was as charming as ever, her gown in the very same shade of blue as her eyes, dark hair done up in the latest style, jewelry and shoes matched in the seemingly effortless perfection she was known for. And her loveliness had not gone unnoticed, a few looks over her person had resulted in a few flirtatious conversations with wealthy looking, well-bred gentlemen. Unfortunately none of them struck her fancy enough for her to stay longer than a conversation, after all, she was looking for entertainment, not more work. Perhaps her recent stay with the major and his family had caused her to be more gun-shy than she would have liked to believe.

Grabbing another glass of wine, she moved to a spot where she could keep an eye on all that was going on. From there she decided to engage in her second favorite hobby: people watching.

Ramez was also people watching. He was standing in a corner cradling his wine as he observed everyone in attendance. Fisher, Slater, the two feuding lords of the underworld were high focus points for him. Lord Hurst drew his attention more often than not as did the Russian. Were these all competition? Hurst could possibly be associated with any of these "leaders" so that did make him a threat. How would Ramez go about it?

He set his eyes intently on a few people as he remained unobserved when a woman stepped infront of him, seemingly doing the same thing, and blocked his vision. With a disgruntled wrinkle of his nose, the Spaniard stepped forward and tapped her gently on the shoulder. "Pardon me, Senoria, but I am afraid you are obstructing my view of the party... just because I am not part of it does not mean I do not wish to witness it."

She turned her head at the touch to her shoulder and the accented voice in her ear, she did like a good accent from time to time, though here lately she had grown bored with the french as it was so frequently heard these days. Brilliant blue eyes finding their way up to the face that belonged to the finger that had so rudely tapped at her without permission, deciding then that the accent had to belong somewhere on the Mediterranean rim from the sun-kissed tint to his skin. Spanish, or perhaps Italian, she couldn't be bothered to know as she 'did not speak foreign'.

"If such a tiny thing as I am obstructing your view, perhaps the good Sir should find himself a new and better vantage point from which to view the goings on. Or perhaps grow another foot as I am not very tall but one could see much better over me from such a height." She had such a mouth on her, and was not inclined to apologize or meekly move as would most of her sex when confronted by such an imposing stranger.

At first the Spaniard did not look impressed. Then as he looked down at her a smirk formed at one side of his lips and if possible, his formidable manner became even more unnerving. This girl had fire. She was pretty, and unafraid to call him on his little point, and it intrigued him.

"Size does not matter when your aura projects so violently around you," he said cryptically. "Nor does it come into play when your ego seems to make you seven inches taller..."

She raised her eyebrows at that, managing to keep herself from grinning. His reaction pleased her a great deal as she had expected him to grow annoyed or merely to grumble and move away. She liked a healthy, witty exchange and he seemed willing to offer her that.

She turned it right back on him, enjoying the thought of a good give and take between them. "If that is true, Sir, then your extra seven inches should make it so your view is never obstructed. Those of my country are usually of the milkweed sort and are rarely so tall, so you should have no trouble seeing anything you wish to in rooms as crowded as these."

"You would think I could see over all, but I seem to have met my match with you," he replied, soft and smooth as he sipped his wine with an air of indifference that usually infuriated people he spoke to. He wanted to test this little woman. She didn't seem to be backing down and secretly that made her a deeper mystery to be explored at any opportunity. "Your words seem to flutter up and stick in the air like smoke... you are a new creature and one which I am most fortunate to meet."

With another smile Ramez extended his hand. "I am Ramez Detraum. And you are?"

"How poetic, I shall have to remember that. Though I will say the word 'smoke' does seem to come up a great deal when one is speaking of anything that has to do with me, perhaps I should look into that." she knew well that 'fire' was a better and more frequent word, as she did tend to burn and smolder. She did like it, surprisingly, but then she had always been enthralled by fire.

"Cordelia Slater." she slid her delicate hand into his, half expecting him to crush it in his massive hand. It was so refreshing to find a man dressed so well exuding so much masculinity, and there was hardly anything more she liked in a man than masculinity.

A Slater? This was too delicious, he had to be dreaming. With a flicking blink of his eyes he studied her closely. This was not too good to be true... please, fate, do not be so cruel. "Pleasure to meet you, Senorita Slater, Fire of London," he said smoothly. "I am referred to as an inferno more often than not. I would disagree but I cannot deny that I leave many infernos in my wake..." He glanced around the room as if she were already boring him but he continued to speak. "One cannot help the fact that sparks fly where they will, especially around me. Judging by my meeting you this evening and despite your icey appearance," he added, meaning her dress, "it seems I have the brightest in my midst."

"You do have a tongue as smooth as silk, Mr. Detraum, I am very sure you leave many burning in your wake with such talk as that." and while he was very charming, Delia was quite fond of the way he pronounced S' in his exotic accent, but she was not so easily taken in. But it did leave her more inclined to remain in his company, so perhaps his words were having the desired affect after all.

She knew his game, she played it often enough to know it well, but this was one of the rare times she got to be on the receiving end. "But tell me, what brings you to England, and to this..." she glanced out at the crowd for a moment then looked back to him. "Dull affair?"

He had meant inferno literally - anyone who knew the Detraum family also knew their penchant for flaming buildings - but he hadn't the heart to stand there and explain, shattering the illusion. She was on to him, he knew that, but she seemed to find it fun and so Ramez continued in the same way.

"Business. I am here to assess my competition and attempt to gain new clients, but so far I cannot find anyone who might be in need of any of my services. How about you, Senorita? A lady such as you should be charming the likes of the bachelors on the dance floor. Unless... you are one of those 'different women', the ones so intent to be independant that you are putting off the plight for marriage until you have your adventure out of your system."

"I do my best to always attend the right parties every season, Sir, and any event thrown by Lord Hurst is usually the talk of the whole year. Also," she added a slight smile coming to her lips and she tilted her head in the direction of her father. "My father was planning to attend and he has been doing his best to keep his eye on me thanks to his concerns of the potential actions of one, Mr. Fisher." it also had something to do with all the trouble she had been stirring up lately, but Mr. Detraum did not need to know that.

That smile only grew, "I am not one of the miserable few who think marriage is just cause to dampen an adventurous spirit and should be avoided. Most of the bachelors here, while charming and well turned out, are hardly worth the effort I have found, so that is why I have come to stand here and observe, hoping some late arrival will spark my fancy."

As Ramez spoke to this woman he was learning all the more about his new residence in London. Fisher and Slater did not trust each other, and knew of each. Fisher was quite a one, and Slater was a master at working the room if what Ramez had seen was to be believed. Judging by his daughter he was a strong person. If children were the product of their parents, Cordelia might be a carbon copy.

"Late arrival?" Ramez inquired innocently, taking another idle sip from the glass. "I was only tardy by a few minutes. Hardly what you could call late..." his eyes twinkled in that knowing manner and he hid his grin beneath the glass as he took another drink.

That caused her to chuckle lightly. "Such cheek for a foreigner." she was pleased he had tapped her and had caused her to forget the boredom of a few moments ago. "You are very bold, Sir, is it particular to you or is it a common trait among your countrymen?" she was fishing for information as always, most she came across usually gave up more than they were willing when confronted with drink and her lovely, sweet face.

"You mentioned looking for clients, Mr. Detraum, what is it that you do?" she was hoping it would be something useful to her as she was growing to like this spaniard before her. It would be a shame if she had to toss him away because he wasn't useful.

He knew Miss Salter by sight. And reputation, for that matter. It was well-known that she and her father fought, and that the two were more alike than anyone could sanely want to be to Irving Slater. Still, perhaps she wasn't as murderous as her father, and Harry wasn't ready to approach the man yet, especially with the treacherous red-head in tow.

"I see your father's here." He said to her, taking another glass himself from the tray. "And he's brought his ginger slut. How lovely." He added, taking a swallow. "I've heard that you went on the piss the other day." He said more directly to her, smiling slightly, "Have fun?" He had dropped the posh accent now, his voice as Hackney as any other lower-class urchin.

Delia wasn't sure who he was at first. She had never seen Fisher before, or if she had, she had forgotten. But from his face, Mary had hold her a bit of what he looked like, but that had been ages ago, he also seemed to know her, and he was brave enough to march up to her and insult Slater's woman, she quickly came to the conclusion that he had to be Fisher.

His mention of Viv set her jaw on edge, agreeing with him but she would not make comments on the woman to him. She did not want to give him an opening. "You'll have to ask Mary and your little Irish twat. Did he manage to get himself free and back to you even without his clothes? I know I did not tie him down too tightly, but perhaps your sister was feeling spiteful, and after he fucked her so well only hours before." she shook her head. "Tsk, tsk, tsk, I love Mary with all of my heart, but I still cannot see why anyone would think her the good one out of the two of us when she does things like that, and especially when it was her idea."

It was only a pity she did not know she would run into Harry that night, she would have brought her knife.

Harry smirked, taking a swallow from his glass. She wasn't that old, not really, but certainly much like her father. Angry, yes, but everyone was at that age. He was, especially, but she was unlikely to be whipped half to death. "I don't know. But it was rather amusing when he stumbled in the door naked. Personally, I would have thought you two girls had better taste then to spend the evening with him. Then again, you did tie him up; which was a good idea. Pity he managed to get himself free, really." He said, taking another swallow and watching the press of dancers in the centre of the room. "Perhaps she has a more innocent face?" He proposed, with a slight shrug. "Although I can't see it myself. She used to lift up her skirts when she was three, to anyone passing by the house. I think she learnt it from our mother." Another shrug. Anything else she could insult him with after that lot would be water under the bridge.

"I'd say she got that from your sister Ann, with what I've been hearing about her lately."

Slater sidled up behind Harry, moving over to place a protective hand on Delia's shoulder. He didn't like Fisher talking to his girl. Hell he didn't like Fisher. But then, this Russian the ball was in aid of wasn't really on Fisher's side and to know that he, Slater, could be part of his downfall just made the music merrier and the wine all that sweeter.

"Quite surprised you came here tonight, Fisher. There's a rumour Mr Petrov aint too keen on you."

"Mr Slater, what a wonderful surprise." Harry said rather dryly, dropping the Hackney accent like the plague. "And dressed up in your Sunday best too." He smiled, and took another swallow of his wine. "And where is your good lady friend? Not turned her colours again and run away from you too?"

He set his glass down then, looking from father to daughter. "She is more than old enough to fight her own battles, Irving. Don't moddy-coddle her. We were simply having a chat about her evening out with Paddy. You know Paddy, don't you? Irish lad, likes to think he has a way with women."

"Oh, the lanky-haired Russian? I can't say I've spoken to him this evening. I'm here to see Lord Hurst. He and I have some business arrangements." He said with a small smile.

She should have expected her father to have his eye on her and to come over at the first sign of trouble. Of course that was all subjective as she saw the man before her as nothing but an insignificant little insect that needed to be crushed. Still, if her father was with her he was not with Viv and that pleased her a great deal.

"Such a worthless speck of a human being would hardly be of notice to my father, Mr. Fisher, especially since he is one of your lot." she said quickly, not concerned as Viv had probably already mentioned the boy to her father. "But I feel we must trust your more intimate knowledge on the subject of lads."

It truly was a shame that her father felt the need to come over, even if she thought it wonderfully sweet of him, she could have had so much fun trading insults with Fisher. At least with her father there to witness she could earn back a little more of his good graces.

Slater beamed when his daughter began to insult Fisher but tried to direct it downwards as he made to stroke some dust off her shoulder - however there was no dust there and the gesture was to assure her she was doing well. It felt good to see her fighting the Slater corner. What did Fisher have? A letchy old Lord and a teenage boy who looked like an ugly girl. Oh yes... and a price on his head.

"Now, now, Delia, love, we shouldn't be paying attention to the rumours which are already rife about Mr Fisher's past-times," he said, mocking in his usual gentle tone whilst avoiding doing it directly to Harry's face. "We both know it's no good for his reputation... well, what's left of it."

Turning his attention to Fisher he beamed again. "Aye, the lanky-haired russian, the one who didn't really take a shine to you... isn't this ball in aid of him?... curious. I wonder if he knows of yours and Lord Hurst's business plans..." A chuckle came from deep in his throat. "If you can really call it a business."

Harry smiled a little more, "Ah, you've trained her up, Slater. Glad to see it. Good to see she's got a bit more spine then some women." He said, implying Viv but not saying it allowed.

He couldn't help rolling his eyes though, at the talk of rumours about his passed. "Irving, Irving. Quoting gossip and rumour? I thought you had more dirt on me that that. Fucking my mother should have given you a bit more sway then that. Glad to hear you bumped off Darby though, I owe you for that." He reached for another drink, "But the pair of you together? Father and daughter? Together your more than twice my age. Try to hit me with something vaguely more threatening then my reputation and the state of the Theatre's clientèle."

Vivian had been watching the whole exchange from afar. Too worried about what could come of it to step any closer, she'd simply listened, trying not to wince at the various insults traded between two men she cared deeply about. It was awful how things had turned out. It wasn't fair, but she couldn't think about that now.

Something in her snapped and she drained the last of her drink, taking a step forwards and laying her hand against Slater's shoulder. Avoiding Delia's eyes and instead looking at Harry with a quietly sympathetic expression, she cleared her throat. "Play nice, now, Irving. Tonight isn't for bickering. Just... let Mr Fisher be."

Just what he needed. There was nothing worse than being called Irving twice in a row. Giving Vivian a subtle yet still obvious-to-her warning look he then turned to Harry.

"Not to worry, Vivian, love. The discussion is hardly going anywhere when all the other party can do is pick holes in my argument as they haven't got their own." He patted her arm gently and then turned to Delia. "As you seem so keen as to perfect my insults though, Fisher I'll offer you some advice.. I wouldn't bother trying to bring up my dealings with your dear old Ma. The experience wasn't that memorable, so that particular blade will hardly cut deep. The one which sorted out your Georgie on the other hand..." he smirked, "well. Less said about that, the better eh?"

Damn, damn, damn the man to hell! Harry had kept his composure, even attempted to show himself amused by the poor quality of insults that were thrown. But as Slater cast Vivian off like some unimportant trollop, and then, then say Georgie's name, that was it. Harry snapped, and as tightly wound as he had been these last few months, all the pent-up anger, the rage, the tiredness and frustration had to come out somewhere, and unfortunately (perhaps only unfortunate due to their current surroundings) the target for all those emotions became Slater's nose, which Harry took great delight in punching as hard as he fucking well could. "Treat the lady with some respect." He hissed, "And don't sound so happy you had a kid murdered, you little shit."

Vivian swallowed, stepping back and shrinking into herself a little. She had been clearly warned by Slater, her pride a little hurt, and she chewed her lip, listening half-heartedly to the inevitable insults still being thrown. When Georgie's name was mentioned, however, she let out a tiny gasp, looking up; oh, that was low. That was low, and she was about to step forward again and berate Slater when... Harry punched him.

For a moment, she was preoccupied with the fact that Harry actually cared whether she was shown respect or not. Her internal dialogue momentarily sent feelings of fondness in Harry's direction before she realised that... he'd... just... punched... Slater. And then she cried out and covered her mouth, eyes wide. "Harry!!"
