"I just happen to be gifted with an excellent pair of ears, one must if one is going to survive in London. But I will admit that I have had occasional trouble with some of your words, and your S' are very amusing, so forgive me if I have been smiling after some of your words. And if you do not like this accent I have another, not so posh, but it would better denote that I am indeed a Slater." and she saw no shame in that, she was very proud of her father and of belonging to his family.

His eyes were so dark and it seemed as if they went on forever, it caused her to hold his glaze perhaps a bit longer than she should. "As difficult as it may be for you to believe, I was a sweet, good natured child, so I hardly think I would have uttered any sort of profanity." even if she had heard her father cursing as far back as she could remember.

"My S's?" Ramez studied her with some amusement now, knowing she was teasing. He thought he spoke perfect English despite the slight inflection of his Spanish accent. "I should hope you have another accent - if what you are speaking now is not posh then I dread to think what your normal speaking voice sounds like."

With a rub of his chin he surveyed her closer still. "I believe you were sweet. I believe you were good natured. I also believe something happened to you to turn the tide. Forgive me if I am wrong."

She laughed lightly, "If it makes you feel any better it is nice to hear an accent that is not French, London was invaded when I wasn't looking apparently." she would not switch into her 'street' accent here, as this was the last place she would she would even think to use it.

"I-" that one simple little comment had knocked her off her stride, something that was so very hard to do. To be fair, she was still very sore over what her mother had done to her and the rest of the family. It was hard enough being so little and watching her mother walk out on them, but to see her father and brother in pain... It stung every time she thought of it. She quickly looked away for a moment, trying to find a way around of all of this.

"It isn't important." she said, then met his eyes once more.

"I believe it is. We brush over the most important things as if they never happened to conceal the hurt, but truly we are just hiding from ourselves. Our will to cover up our misery increases the pain and we are caught in an infinite web of inner disdain..."

Ramez knew he was getting to her and continued to play the card. Subtlely did it, not wanting to overbear her, but wanting to know more of this spirited creature. If he wanted to know more - she would need something in return. "I watched my mother's body being taken down the stairs after she was murdered. I admit it to you now because it is important. It is who I am. Despite my strange S's and penchant for old customs..." he added with a small smile.

She took a very deep drink, finishing it off, then placing it down on a passing tray. She did not like that he had so easily found her sore spot, it made her angry, made her feel weak and transparent.

"Perhaps you were lucky, you stay with your mother long enough and she'll do nothing but hurt you." she said quickly and much too flippantly, her tone sounding terrible to her own ears. She took another drag from the cigar, still having plenty left. "I'm perfectly happy in my web of disdain, my anger keeps me warm when the nights get cold and lonely."

"Really?... I use something else to keep me warm at night," Ramez said, but not necessarily meaning the thing she might have deduced from his comment. She was stirred and Ramez liked it, pressing on. "My view is that most parents hope their children outlive them so they can pass on the misery without facing consequences. Unfortunately my father lived too longand met his demise by one of his own."

She was beginning to grow very uncomfortable with his prodding and pushing into her psyche. She was looking for a bit of fun, not to be analyzed by some stranger with an accent and to open old wounds. She shifted her weight a little as she brought the cigar to her lips again and breathed out the smoke quickly. "I don't care to linger with other things that would keep a person warm." and he could take that any way he liked.

"I'm sure that was difficult for you, but at least you know the man is well and truly dead." she did not want to keep talking about this and if he kept pushing her she would leave him there to watch the party alone.

"I do not know a person with sense who does wish to linger," Ramez commented briefly, catching the eye of a pretty lady and smiling towards her, bowing his head politely. She was one with the leads to many high places. He needed to keep her sweet and he made a mental note to follow her up later.

"Si, I know first hand," he said with an idle tone, "but let us not linger on it. I can see you are distressed by men's underhand business. A delicate lady like you should not be privvy to such deeds..." The slight sarcasm was evident but he didn't overdo it, wanting to get back to the hearty banter they had exchanged before.

"Distressed by men's underhand business." she repeated, eyebrows raised. "Surely you know that is far from true given the man who is my father alone, and while my looks are delicate, they are the only delicate things about me." she smiled slightly, quickly forgiving him for his little attempted foray into her head.

"Though I very much doubt, from the tone in your voice, that you would be surprised that I understand 'men's underhanded business' far better than I do other members of my own sex." she used the word sex as opposed to gender for a reason, she also knew he was probably clever enough to figure out why. "While you on the other hand seem to do quite well with women, it would be such an interesting talent were it not inherent in every fop and dandy one comes across."

Ramez laughed - he could not keep a straight face and throw insults after she had so cleverly delivered that one on him. "You would think it would offend me to be bundled into the same line as the weak and feminine men but on the contrary it amuses me a great deal. I highly doubt you think I am, shall we say, on the same page as they are. The only men I place a kiss upon are the ones who are about to die." At my mercy...

Wrinkling his eyes at her, a twinkle in the depths of them, he added "and I must say, Miss Slater, that your delicate looks might be the only endearing thing about you."

"How very continental of you." she said, referring to him kissing any man at all. "But you are making assumptions on the way I think, not a very wise thing, assuming what a woman is thinking. But I will say you hardly look the sort to fancy other men, though appearances, as I am sure you know, mean nothing. I am an excellent example of this truth, I may look delicate and I am certainly not."

Her smile was sweet and urbane as one would expect from a proper young woman, when she was decidedly not. "You could say that, but it would most certainly be a lie. You find my tongue amusing, if you had not you would have told me off and left. But I think the real reason you're hanging about me is that I am in fact Irving Slater's daughter and you think I could be possibly be useful to you."

"Or assuming that women think at all," he said prominently, a very stern look on his face as if it were a serious problem. One could never be too careful - women who had a braincell were quite dangerous. This one was tenfold.

Whilst Delia spoke Ramez took the opportunity to grab a drink from a passing servant and smelled the wine before he drank it. Nice taste, but nothing like home. "Ah, see - but there you go! You assume that I would have simply walked off if I found you annoying when in fact, I am one to challenge annoying people just to annoy them themselves..." Another sip, another smile. "And of course you are of use to me. You are distracting me from dismally formal proceedings."

She chuckled lightly, "Oh women certainly think, they think a great deal more than they should. And we do not have the distraction of thinking with the wrong head as you men do." Delia was a clever little thing, which only made her more dangerous.

"If you are using that sort of logic, Mr. Detraum, then you must not think me annoying, as I am far from annoyed. In fact, if we are to judge my current feelings as an indication of yours, then you must enjoy my company a great deal." but she knew he was drawn to her because her name was Slater. And she actually was alright with that as he was very entertaining. "I make a very good distraction."
