WHO: Beckett and Lucifer
WHEN: 226404.02 late evening
WHERE: The brig
SUMMARY: Lucifer's had a temper tantrum, so that should make Beckett's night at work more interesting.
WARNINGS: None, yet.

Once he realized that the security officers weren't just leading him out of the lounge, but instead were intent on taking him to the brig, Lucifer became rather belligerent. It ended up taking four of them to get him inside his overly lit and modern cell. Which he now sat in, two hours later, bored out of his mind. Twice he'd called out for someone to bring him a drink, and barring that, at least his PADD, because simply sitting and staring at a wall was enough to drive a man insane. Or so he thought right then, as there were plenty of other things he could be doing like distracting himself from the fact that Maze had left the ship and he hadn't.

"I hate this bloody place," he muttered to himself, but then looked up as he could feel someone watching him.

"What, jail?" Kate questioned, lifting one of those manicured eyebrows in his direction. "Most people do, that's why they work so hard not to get arrested."

Stepping fully into the brig with its row of cells, the low heel of her boots clicked along the floor as she walked towards Lucifer's cell, carrying a tray of food in her hands. "I know you don't need to eat, but part of being in the brig is that you're given meals at a certain time." The Enterprise might have been modern and, to her, futuristic but they had still gone with the old school format of sliding the tray through an opening in the door though she at least had to push a button to raise the door and press another to close it back.

"According to some of the others, that was quite a temper tantrum you had in the bar," Kate said once she had delivered the tray and secured the door.

"Well, yes," Lucifer replied. "Especially since it's so unnecessary but also this entire bloody ship in general." He looked at Kate, looked at the food she'd brought and wrinkled his nose. "I'm not about to eat that, you know."

Leaning back against the wall, he said, "Shouldn't you be with that husband of yours? Seems like that would be a good enough reason to take some time off bringing prisoners their dinners."

Glancing over at Beckett, he didn't respond at first. When he did, there was a touch of hysteria in his voice. "Yes, I had an impressive temper tantrum and now I'm in time-out. In the meantime, I'm still on this damned ship, and now the one person who's always been there for me isn't. And I just now realized she probably had her blades on her and that would have been enough to get me off the ship but too late!"

"This ship runs a lot like the military. You break the rules, you sit in the brig and don't really get a choice in the matter."

She hadn't expected Lucifer to eat what she brought, she had never seen him eat anything in the time she had known him, but much like breaking the rules got you thrown in the brig, Starfleet expected those contained inside of it to be given their meals at a proper time. "You don't have to eat it," she said with a shrug of her shoulders. "They just provide it in case you are hungry. Starvation is generally frowned upon."

With a snort of amusement, Kate turned to grab one of the chairs on the opposite wall and carried it over to the door of Lucifer's cell, taking a seat and making herself comfortable. "Fun thing about husbands, you can leave them alone and come back to them later. And I saw him all day yesterday." And well into this morning, but she didn't think that part was relevant.

It was interesting, and a tiny bit funny, watching him lose his cool but Kate resisted the urge to react. She kept her face neutral through his rant, only raising her eyebrows once it seemed like Lucifer had finished. " First of all, don't you think Maze would have offered them to you or found a way to take you with her? It's not exactly a secret that you want to leave."

"Are you hungry?" he asked. "Feel free to help yourself."

He'd seen Castle yesterday too, during laser tag, but hadn't really had a chance to meet him yet. For all he knew he had been putting it off as each new person that he got to know made his fate on this bloody starship more real.

Kate's question threw him off, and he stared at her silently for a moment. "I wonder where she's gone back to," he mused, his voice much calmer than before. "I hate the unknown more than anything. Well maybe slightly less than not being in control of my own life."

"No, I'm good."

"Home, hopefully," Kate replied, "Maybe she can find Chloe and explain that you've been detained." Maybe it was the wrong thing to say considering that they had no idea what happened when people left the ship, but she knew from experience that it was better to have a bit of hope versus none.

Leaning forward in the chair, Kate rested her elbows on top of her knees and gave a slow sigh. "See, I think you're wrong about that. Being in control of your life is really about doing the things that you want to do and living the life you want to live even in less than ideal circumstances."

"She could, couldn't she?" Lucifer asked. "And she definitely would," he added. Maze was nothing if not loyal. Of course, Chloe didn't even believe he was the devil. Explaining that Lucifer was trapped a couple hundred years in the future, in space, wasn't something he expected would go over any better.

Laughing abruptly, he said, "You know, it's funny that I'm in here for this, whereas the worst thing I've ever done? I got away with free and clear."

"That I can't tell you. I'm not really familiar with what demons can or can't do. But if you think she could, then I'd say that's good enough for everyone else."

It was strange to be sitting here, talking Lucifer off the same sort of ledge he'd eased her from last week. Kate's had been more about guilt and regret than anger, but both had created the same misery. "Do I want to know what that is?"

"Well, they were roommates, so I imagine she'd be able to find her rather easily," Lucifer mentioned.

Turning to face the wall, rather than Kate, Lucifer smirked. "Probably not," he mentioned. "Fratricide has been frowned upon since Cain killed Abel. Though I always found it hard to really blame Cain, since I know what it's like to be outside of my father's favor."

Turned to the wall, Lucifer wasn't able to see the way Kate's faced changed. At the mention of fratricide, the amusement in her face shifted. No longer did she look pleasantly amused, the slight grin on her lips faded out into a hard line and her eyes briefly lost their sparkle to reflect a glint of anger.

Even if they were friends, the discussion of one person taking the life of another was never something she could take lightly. Even if Kate understood and accepted the reasoning, even if she herself had been forced to kill in self-defense or the protection of others, it never made it any easier to swallow. The act was too close, to weighted down in how it had changed and molded her life.

"You killed your brother and got away with it?" she asked, forcing herself to sound casual, reverting to her training as a cop to make sure that her own thoughts stayed inward and didn't show on her face.

Not having expected to tell this story, Lucifer wasn't sure why he'd brought it up. The fact that he was now trapped without any alcohol wasn't going to make telling it any easier. And yet, it was still a worthy distraction from everything else.

"In one sense, yeah," he replied. "While invulnerable around most humans," Lucifer explained, "my siblings and I can hurt each other. Mortally even. But with Uriel, I didn't just kill him... No, that would have been too easy..."

Slumping now, against the wall, Lucifer stared down at the floor beneath him, trying to think of how best to tell the story.

"My brother showed up one day and I figured he was acting on behalf of my father, wanting me to complete my end of a bargain I'd made with dear old dad, where we had different ideas of how to settle it. And Uriel? He didn't just kill people or do something. He worked with patterns, and he'd set up a long and complicated path wherein everything was perfectly lined up according to his will. A dog barks and it sets in motion a chain of events that ends in a plane crash... It's hard to explain, really."

Sighing, Lucifer glanced over at Beckett. "It's a long story. Probably better for another night."

"So don't explain it," Kate replied, her voice filled with far more authority than she would normally use around a friend. The only way she knew to compartmentalize what she had learned was to fold in on herself, to use the part of her that was all cop and cajole the story out of Lucifer by whatever means she needed. "Uriel's patterns aren't important to the story. They aren't why you killed him."

At his look, she gave a shrug, gesturing to the empty brig. "No one here but us. You're the only person I have to guard, and I'm here all night. No reason to stop now."

"On the contrary, they're exactly why I killed him," Lucifer replied, his voice quickening. "Why else would I have killed my brother? You think I wanted to?"

His expression turned to one of annoyance as he continued. "He got my attention with one of his bloody, relevant patterns, letting Chloe get in a car accident. Because when I made my deal with my father, I was bargaining for the detective's life. That much should be obvious."

At least, it was to him, that the one reason he'd ask his father for any favors would be to save Chloe. A bitter laugh escaped his throat as he added, "Maybe it's better for her that I'm gone, as she was always on the verge of dying when I was around."

Staring intently at the wall, he continued. "I was supposed to bring my mother back to hell or lose Chloe, but I was tired of playing by my father's stupid rules. He didn't ever explicitly say that was the deal, because he never actually says anything, does he? He just drops hints, gives you visions, but never tells you what he wants because that would be too easy."

As he continued speaking the edge to his voice grew. "So I thought Uriel was there to deliver my mother back to where she belonged. Instead... Instead he had with him my sister Azrael's blade."

Which would have meant nothing to Beckett, but Lucifer's eyes were wide as he recalled that moment. That maddening realization of what his brother had intended to do.

"Okay, two things," Kate started, interrupting his story to jab a finger in his direction. "First of all, nothing about this is obvious. You tell stories like a drunk toddler, Lucifer. I wasn't there and I don't know your dad or Chloe or anyone else so what you think is obvious? It's not obvious to me. I personally don't think your dad is as manipulative to the rest of us as he is to you, but maybe that's because I'm not even sure I believe in God."

"Secondly, the patterns aren't why you killed your brother. They're maybe what put you on to the chain of events that led you to kill him, but that's not why you did it. People kill for love, jealousy, anger and money ninety-nine percent of the time. One of your siblings treating humans like puppets on strings isn't a reason, even if it does maybe make him a jackass. Generally, people don't want to kill unless they're a psychopath, and they rarely stop at one."

But Kate had a pretty good idea of where the story was going. Even if Lucifer didn't tell her the whole thing, she had a pretty strong intuition that ultimately what led to his taking someone else's life was the protection of someone else - namely the detective that she wasn't even sure Lucifer knew he was half in love with.

Reclining back in her chair, she waved her hand for him to continue. "Go ahead, finish the story. Get it all out there."

"Okay, first of all," Lucifer mimicked, a tad bit put off being interrupted. "Who the hell would serve alcohol to a toddler? Except maybe Maze. And second, it must be awfully nice to have that option."

She had a point though, but he wasn't about to concede it. "But since you probably don't know what Azrael's blade is, Azrael is my sister and it's her blade. And it doesn't just kill you. It wipes you from reality..."

He paused. "Uriel threatened my mother, and Chloe. And he was about to set one of his bloody patterns in motion that would have killed the both of them... And I used that blade..."

His head dropped. "I had never killed anyone before, and I killed my own brother. There's no afterlife for him, except I saw him, when I got trapped in Hell. I told you about that, right?" he asked emotionless. "I went down there for Chloe and I almost got trapped for eternity, forever stabbing him with that blade, unable to change that decision, to react differently. My mum had to pull me out..."

He didn't care if that didn't particularly make sense. "And I deserved to be punished, but here we are. I'm locked up for being a touch angry."

At that she did roll her eyes, pressing her lips together to keep from smiling. Lucifer's penchant for drama wasn't a surprise, in fact, she'd pay good money to get him in a room with her mother-in-law to see who could out theatricalize the other, but the level of dramatics in that one comeback was nearly more than she could take with a straight face.

Swallowing down the urge to laugh, Kate made herself focus again on the murder, hearing out the rest of his story with her complete attention. As she suspected, he had only killed to save others, used extreme force to protect two innocent people from having their lives wiped out in what seemed to her like some elaborate and horrific game.

"I've killed more than one person. I spent a lot of time thinking about all the ways I'd kill one particular person," she began quietly, softly clearing her throat and tucking a piece of hair behind her ear. "I've shot people to protect myself, to protect others. And this guilt you are feeling? It's normal. If it had been for someone you didn't know, you'd still feel it. But it being for someone you do? That makes it so much worse. It doesn't mean you need to be punished. I wouldn't even bring up charges if I had been working the murder. He could have come after you with the blade just as easily as anyone else."

"He was mad, at the end," Lucifer said quietly. "And it's good to hear you say all that, but that doesn't mean I don't deserve to be punished. At least, for that. Being here now because I scared a few people is a bit much."

He tried to laugh at the end of that statement, but it wasn't very convincing. "I need to apologize to Lady Mary though..."

"It's the fact you destroyed Starfleet property that put you here, not scaring people."

With a sigh, Kate got to her feet, walking right up to the door of his cell. "But anger is -- it's natural. For him, for you, for your dad. Anger is the one emotion that's always prevalent in murder. The trick is that you don't let it take over your life and let it define you."

It was clear from the look on her face that she was speaking from experience, but Kate didn't let herself go into any further detail. She had never told Lucifer why she became a cop, and while she probably would one day, now wasn't the time.

"Oh God," Kate scoffed at this last statement, shaking herself out of memories of her mother and all the sadness and darkness that came with it by rolling her eyes at him again. "Mary Crawley isn't as delicate as you like to think she is."

"I didn't destroy it," Lucifer protested. "I just put it in a new location, is all. The table's still there and now there's a nice new space on the floor where people can stand."

But as Kate spoke again, he listened to her, and watched her. Whatever it was that allowed her to speak so knowledgeably, she wasn't sharing, and he wasn't really in the position to push for details.

And then the moment was over and she was talking about Lady Mary, and Lucifer found he had to agree. "Maybe not, but I was still a right bastard."

Smirking he added, "Look at me. I'm a mess. I know I never expected that when I left hell. You humans are far too complicated, you know that?"

"It was bolted to the floor, Lucifer. That means it isn't intended to be moved."

"Life is messy. Nice of you to join us on the ride." Shaking her head at him, Kate lifted her hand to press the button that raised the small door. "Go ahead and push the food tray back out."

"Details," he muttered. "You wouldn't know it from how easy it was to lift up."

Pushing the tray out and grateful that it was now safely away from him, he looked at Kate. "If I'm going to be stuck on this bloody ship, I'm glad that you can put up with me. And I'm glad that husband of yours showed up. He seemed alright when he wasn't shouting at me while shooting me with a laser gun yesterday."

She had to grin at that, easily able to picture Rick yelling at complete strangers in the midst of one of the games that had been played the day before. "Yeah, he's......intense when it comes to laser tag." And a few other things, but Kate didn't think Lucifer really wanted to know that part.

"But you're right, I can put up with you. That's what friends do. Put up with each other, support each other, and kick their asses when it's needed." She shrugged her shoulders at that, grinning at him as she leaned down to pick up the tray. "The drama queen attitude isn't new, either. Seen it all before."

That part made Kate laugh, the sound echoing through the brig with all its glass and metal surfaces. "You'll have to explain that when you aren't locked up for being a menace."

But, for now, she needed to take the tray back and do her rounds on the rest of the ship. It wasn't likely that Lucifer would try to break out and it wasn't as if she wouldn't be right back in the brig within half an hour. "I'll be back later. Don't destroy the place."
