Do the people in these ports generally speak High English, or do they have their own?

And while I'm on that note, how many languages are spoken amongst the people on this ship? I'd like to learn at least one of them in the time I'm here.

A wide number of languages. I believe some of the gods speak most if not all of them.

They do, strangely enough. Either that or something not only magically translates everything but makes it lipreadable too.

I've heard of translation runes, but this is on a much wider scale.

Even still, I much prefer being able to speak languages myself instead of having to rely on any kind of translator, even a magical one.

Especially since if it is magically translating, it's not magically translating perfectly. I can understand exactly the same amount as I normally understand when someone speaks English.

I'm usually the same. I don't trust translations to convey the same nuance.

Portuguese! That's a new name. I'd like to learn that one.

I know eleven languages, but I've yet to hear a single one of them spoken besides English - which in my country is called High Royal.

Which English are we talking? There's dozens of dialects.

Might want to check with someone else on the Portuguese before I teach you how to ask for grilled cheese and you end up ordering fried scorpions instead. My Russian's better. And my Spanish. Chinese. Arabic. Picked up a lot of Sindarin in Middle-Earth ...

I recently spent two years deciphering an extinct alien language which may have been the base communication system for most of Earth's early linguistic roots. Although it is a fascinating combination of syntax and morphology, I would not recommend it if you wish to actually communicate in the language you are interested in learning. As far as I am aware there are no members of that species on board this vessel.

That sounds fascinating, but yes, communication is my highest priority. Should I be here long enough to learn the useful languages, however, I'd also be happy to take a look at that one. I wonder how much of it would apply to the languages I know from my Earth.

Not knowing your Earth I cannot provide a sufficient response. The language, however, was an amalgamation of ancient Sumerian and Late Indo-European convergences, with influences from various other archaic dialects. Their writing system was similar to Mesopotamian cuneiform.

I am able to mimic the voice of a good friend of mine, to the point that I can convince those on the receiving end of a telephone call that it is my friend speaking.

So far I have only met one of the other Russian speakers here. I should do this.

Spanish and Italian are similar, though I did not study them, so my knowledge is limited.
