Do the people in these ports generally speak High English, or do they have their own?

And while I'm on that note, how many languages are spoken amongst the people on this ship? I'd like to learn at least one of them in the time I'm here.

ALUCARD EMERY

I'm fairly confident I'm going to win the bet.

They do, strangely enough. Either that or something not only magically translates everything but makes it lipreadable too.

I've heard of translation runes, but this is on a much wider scale.

Even still, I much prefer being able to speak languages myself instead of having to rely on any kind of translator, even a magical one.

Especially since if it is magically translating, it's not magically translating perfectly. I can understand exactly the same amount as I normally understand when someone speaks English.

I'm usually the same. I don't trust translations to convey the same nuance.

Exactly. My parents always relied on translators in diplomatic situations, but I hope to never need one myself. At least not for long.

What languages do you speak?

Speak, English, Algonquin, Spanish, Japanese, ASL, PISL, JSL and International sign.

What I can read is a much longer list.

That's a very impressive list already.

What language(s) do you use most here, aside from English?

I'm good at patterns, so language structure is easy to pick up.

American Sign. English is definitely standard but there are a few people who like to practice occasionally.

That's an interesting way of putting it. The structures of languages have always made sense to me as well, although I'm not sure I'm as good with other types of patterns.

I will certainly look into that one. Hopefully there are some books on it that I can borrow in the library, or in one of the ports.

More likely the library than the ports, I think.

Then I hope it is well-stocked. If not, I'll have to learn the harder way.

I'd suggest looking for Russian as well, I know there are several people who speak that.

Thank you! The man below said he speaks Russian, and was willing to teach me. I'll put those two at the top of my list for now.

It's one of the ones I know on paper, but it's not familiar enough to lipread and I'm not too sure about the pronunciation.

Would you like to learn along with me?

Problematic, given I can't hear anything. It took a long while to manage the ones I have.

There's nothing wrong with learning slow. But if you don't have an interest, I won't be insulted.

Is the other language - the sign one - one of the languages that isn't spoken, then?

It's not so much slow as incredibly tedious to learn to pronounce things you can't hear. Aside from English the ones I can actually speak have a fairly predictable system of sounds but I still get things wrong. And learning to lipread a language that you aren't instinctively fluent in is very difficult as well. Reading and writing, that's just a matter of understanding the grammar and learning the vocabulary.

Non-verbal, yes. Hand shapes, positions, and movements, and facial expressions often add nuance.

I can understand that. Well [...] I can't really, but I'm doing my best to imagine.

Fascinating. I'm very excited to learn that one.
