There was so much screaming in her mind; Hydra had never allowed her to go this long without any kind of wipe or debrief before. She didn't know what to do with the leeching memories that were bleeding into her brain like drops of ink in water. Some were strong and lingered whilst others disappeared after moments. She wasn't sure what were hers and what were planted, the fake ones felt just as real and she was not the person to say which were which.
It had been a slow drip feed of people talking to her over the few days she had been cut off from her handlers. The Winter Soldier preferred solitary confinement, but even in the hospital the security was rather lax. She could so very easily now slip from the room and look out over the snow as she had done at night. The desire to see Rogers dead was waning though she wouldn't have minded giving him another good left swing to break his perfect pretty face. He was far too attractive for his own good.
Now, though, the hospital was not peaceful. There had been commotion yesterday and she had mostly been left to her own devices all through the day and night. It was easy to figure out what had happened judging by the incessantly crying child on the floor above her. Her hand twitched every time it cried, though it never lasted long. The mother's footsteps shuffled and the baby was quietened and soothed. Her hand still twitched when it cried.
By Wednesday afternoon, early, the child had been sleeping and there were footsteps again and running water. It wasn't until the water was hammering that the child cried. And cried and cried. There was nobody there to soothe it - and her - again. The Winter Soldier's whole body lurched forward as if pulled by strings. She jimmied the window and climbed up the floor to the baby's room.
It was a tiny thing. Pink and soft and new. She didn't hesitate to take the girl into her arms - it was nice to know it was a girl - and tried to soothe her. The Winter Soldier's eyes stung with stubborn tears as old memories and new memories dripped into the watered down vat of her mind.
"Shhh, little girl, your mother will help you," she whispered to it, rocking it in her arms.
