Tonight is the first night of Hanukkah, and as always, I welcome anyone who wishes to observe this Holiday (whether you or Jewish or not) into my home.

We will be lighting the Menorah shortly after nightfall before partaking in pray and a feast of fried foods to celebrate the miracle of the oil. Everyone is Welcome, though please let me know if you intend to stop by so I can ensure there is enough food to go around.

I hope to see the two of you tonight.

This is the first year I have ever celebrated Christmas as well as my own traditions because Tia and Tony celebrate and I want them to feel as happy and safe here as possible. I have a tree and lights and let them pick out a few random decorations.

Obviously I know about Santa Claus, but is there any other Christmas traditions I might need to know about to make sure that this goes well for them?

As for Christmas, there is a religious meaning, but plenty of non-religious (hi) celebrate too. Sounds like you got it about right with decorations and a tree.

I've never really thought about it before? There are like 14 or so, but most of them are 2 or more days long. What can I say, we love a good celebration. And not all of them are High Holy Days.

What happened? Why would they be upset with you?

They do seem to mostly involve food. And the food's always good. Except for the fish.

So, Klaus, were you planning on mentioning to the rest of us that you have children in your care, or were we supposed to just ignore them when we came around to exchange gifts and leave them feeling as awkward and neglected?

I need sizes and interests and I'm not interested in excuses.

Honestly? I don't know. I wasn't aware I owed them every detail of my life, and I could do without Vanya's implications. But maybe I'm also reading too much into it, and I need to get rid of my sensitivity chip.

I was useless, you know. I was the one they didn't want to look at because I dealt with my shit in a way they didn't approve off. Funny how drugs is like [...] really fucking taboo, right?

I think its clear that despite the wording of the message that Vanya is coming from a place... Of wanting to be a part of yours and the kids lives, and wanting to make them as happy during the holidays as we both do too.

But he wording could have been better, and he implication is unsettling. Your feelings are valid though Klaus, sensitivity chip or not.

This is your family, and so its hard for me to sort out meanings and tones when I dont know them well. I would like to tell Vanya that her implication is insulting, but I'll let you tell me how to navigate this situation, since you know better.

My feelings are the least valid, Dave. Five, Vanya and Luther come first. I'm just kinda left in the back alley.

I know that siblings don't always have to love or like each other, but I feel like Vanya's [...] done nothing but push me away ever since she came back, and that message is just adding to a lot of baggage that I haven't deal with it. Like, I thought I was doing okay with those kids because they're alive and happy? Maybe they're a little too polite, but we'll probably get our comeuppance when they become teenagers. Are you kinda looking forward to that? Because I am.

Maybe not yell at the person who destroyed my world?

I don't want to add to the drama, so I'll just write up a general post on the network about the kids and leave it at that. Address the situation on my fucking terms.

I’ve not celebrated anything in too long to know much about traditions for any holiday. I’m making up my own traditions as I go. Could do that? Make up and start new traditions as you go along. See what works and what doesn’t for next year.

From what I can tell, it can vary so much from one family to another, not to mention country to country, city to city, branch to branch of Christianity. I think having the bare bones is a good place to start. It might be a little late, but I just recently discovered if you write a letter to Santa Claus, and you mail it, you will get a response. Someone responds to the letters. It might be a little late to actually mail them (you don't need postage), but you could arrange for them to write to him if they want, and you could find someone to write a reply and have it delivered to them. Maybe left by the cookies and milk display.

You have a tree and lights and decorations. I don't know if it's a common tradition or not (I assume so based on what I've seen and read), but you could all go out and look at the lights and decorations in the city.

And there are a lot of Christmas movies. They have to be part of a lot of people's traditions. Maybe have a cocoa and cookies and movies night?

I don't mean to give suggestions if that's not what you're looking for. I'm just learning this Christmas thing as I go, too. Thought it couldn't hurt to share some thoughts I've had recently about how to celebrate it. Just in case they might be helpful.

It varies a bit depending on your family. Stockings is a big one, you fill them with random little things that aren't worth being actual presents. Keeps them busy until you open the big ones.
