the morning after
Who: Remus Lupin + Gwen Cooper + Baby Anwen
When: Morning of 1964 July 25
Where: A diner near the Center
What: Awake and hungry (and embarrassed; sorry, Millie), Remus goes on to live like a normal human.
Rating/status: ~PG/finished.

Remus awoke with a great hunger.

It came with a most disgusting groan from the depths of his stomach and he moaned when he dragged his right hand over to it, shaking as he placed it flat on his cold skin. When he felt his tummy move with his breath, he opened his dreary eyes and found the shadowed foot of his bed just half a hand away from his nose. Where had the wolf taken him?

He closed his eyes and breathed slowly. Then moving his palm to the surface of the floor he grunted and pushed himself up, sending the back of his head straight to the metallic frame of his bed so that he yelped and plummeted back to the floor. “Ow, god damn it!”

He spent the next sixteen minutes attached to the floor with his head against the edge of his mattress and at the seventeenth minute he finally pulled himself up, having regained strength to be human again. Stars exploded in his eyes the moment he was on his feet and though he paused to rest them, he stumbled the first few steps he took towards the washroom.

To count, he had eleven lacerations; four were on his left arm, three on his side, the rest on his right forearm. He also had a couple of bite marks that hurt more than the scratches themselves but they were to be expected. Checking his face, he noted that save for a graze he must have acquired for when he fought with his dresser, there was no other outstanding injury. And that was the best news of the day.

He washed up after applying Dittany to his wounds and dressed in a long summer polo top and a pair of brown slacks and his shoes. By then, he was already feeling much better although that didn’t mean much to his stomach. Wand at hand as soon as he was dressed, he began repairing the numerous objects he had damaged during his onslaught and those he couldn’t he simply...decided to position artfully until he could actually fix it.

Remus left his room vowing to do something about it and when he thought that he was finally about to leave last night’s mess behind, Millie’s note on his door would catch his eyes and he would read it with wide ones. He made an unhappy noise of sorts; his charms hadn’t been as effective as he’d hoped they would be. Three-thousand miles and 17 years away, he still needed his friends to clean up after him. On top of that, he was now being asked for a list of items...he couldn’t repair properly (this is how he read it). He wanted to wince at the thought of it. The prospect of chicken soup, however, had only let out an embarrassing noise from his stomach and he found himself in wanting. He couldn’t wait for an hour, though, so he decided that he would go out for breakfast and come back for soup.

On his way out of the Center, he made straight for Millie, depositing a list of the lost items (he decided to give into it), all the while looking at his feet like a schoolboy in detention; he was embarrassed for what he’d done and what she knew. He was moving so fast that he didn’t quite march out of the building, he more like swooped away from it. Interactions, after all, unless it came from his friends, were not anything he enjoyed after a full moon’s night. Outside the Center, he made straight for a diner place (the one thing that excited him about being in America) two corners away and occupied the first seat he could find; he was ravenous. He ordered for a plate of “chips” (“...you mean fries, Sir?” the cute waitress confirmed with him.), a sausage skillet and a cup of coffee, a luxurious meal for him but after having gone on days without proper food, he felt that this was only right. Whether he could afford it or not, he didn’t know, but the money he got for selling off a magically duplicated gold galleon coin, he felt, was more money than he had ever gotten in his entire life. It was illegal, he knew, but he didn’t know how to remove the protective charm on it and hadn’t quite found an American goblin bank yet and Selina’s five dollars only lasted him for so long. The gold seemed real, anyway...if not...a cheap fake...

Still, it only meant one thing: he needed a job. But when didn’t he? And other than a job, he needed a house before the next full moon. His own Shrieking Shack, so to say. Where he was going to find one, he didn’t know.

Remus sighed as he carried his head with his right on his face. Then when the cute waitress returned, he shot up and found her standing beside him with his plate of...fries, cup of coffee, and the morning newspaper.

“Is everything okay, Sir? Should I call an ambulance?”

“No, there is no need,” Remus said to her as she placed his orders on the tabletop as well as the newspapers. “Thank you.” He could barely wait for her to go away when he captured four strips from the plate and sent them straight into his mouth. It was hot enough to set his tongue on fire but he yearned for it. Still, he washed it down with a sip of coffee, ate another three strips before he finally tore open his newspaper.

And for a moment there, he was tempted to shake it until he remembered that he wasn’t reading the Daily Prophet and Muggle newspapers didn’t move. Remus groaned inwardly. This whole living like an American New Yorker Muggle is not going to be easy, he realized for the fifth time...

"My name is Severus," Remus said for his introduction. "Severus Snape." He wondered how many people knew him as Severus Snape now. His voice was light like a sunny day with little clouds and a good breeze. And when Anwen made a protest about her mother's gestures, his smile widened and he chuckled a little. "She's quite adorable," he said to Gwen. "How old is she?"

"Sausage skillet," the cute waitress announced upon her return and as Remus watched her place the deep plate before him, he nearly bit his lip in an effort to keep his stomach quiet although that didn't work quite well. He wondered if he regretted a little that he had "made friends" so early on that he couldn't eat like a pig anymore, but even without Gwen, he knew he would be too embarrassed to actually do it.

"Enjoy your breakfast," the waitress said to him as he picked up his fork and she moved to the Harknesses and beamed and clasped her hands together. "Is everything okay, Ma'am?" She also twiddled her fingers on Little Anwen.

"Nice to meet you, Severus," Gwen replied just before the waitress reappeared. Gwen was familiar enough with the look of hunger to realize that the young man in front of her was nearly starving.

"Everything's just fine," she answered. "Once the little one finishes up, I'll be back to eating my own food." The waitress grinned at Anwen and after pinching her cheeks finally left the table.

Anwen had just started drifting off again, and she started awake with the waitresses touch. Gwen rolled her eyes, but thankfully a few moments later she had drifted off again, this time into a deep enough sleep Gwen was able to get her into the carrier. She moved the nappy bag over first, followed by her plate and coffee, and finally she and Anwen moved over, helping herself to half of Remus' table without so much as a by-your-leave. Gwen still had her instinct, and her instinct was telling her this young man was in trouble... or needed someone to talk to... or something.

"She's all of two weeks," she explained as she slid into the booth across from Remus, bringing the sleeping Anwen with her. "She's a bit large for two weeks, I know. She's taking after her father that way." She picked up a rasher of bacon and took a bite of it. "Go on, tuck in. You're starving... and don't worry about manners. I used to work in an organisation where you learned to eat between alien invasions and planet threatening events. Manners go out the window when you've no clue when the next threat is coming."

Remus had to admit, Gwen sharing tables with him had come to him as a surprise but it was nothing he rejected. He hadn't been in the mood for a conversation but she was an entirely new face and he was banking on his guess that she wasn't a resident of the Center with him. And then there was her baby Anwen. He missed sharing tables with a baby.

So as Gwen settled into his table, he quickly folded over his newspaper and set it beside him on his couch while he rose halfway when he felt he ought to help Gwen with her belongings.

Her invitation to tuck in was definitely welcome, and Remus thanked her as he pierced his first sausage cuts and swallowed them whole, his spirits soaring at the savory flavor. He was determined to making this breakfast a damn good one, and she was helping him on that effort. "Aliens?" he repeated with some interest in his voice the moment he swallowed his food. "You mean those creatures who come in by flying saucers? Are they real?"

Gwen hummed and tilted her head from side to side in a way that was supposed to indicate 'sort of' or 'maybe'. "That question gets complicated to answer here. Yes, they're real where I'm from. Yes, they're real here. Where you're from? Maybe. Maybe not," she explained before taking another bite of bacon.

At this point, the secrecy she'd once had about the fact she was from another place and another time was almost entirely thrown out of the window. Maybe it was that Gwen was tired of having to live in secrecy all the time. Maybe it was the fact that almost everyone - natives included - had accepted that new residents from far off places and times were going to be the norm here.

"Tell me about where you're from. Are there aliens? Super heroes? Is there magic?"

Remus was slowly learning to accept it, but he couldn't believe how many Muggles here understood and accepted magic! There was probably only a small percentage of them as compared to the ignorant ones, but there was still more than he expected.

"Yes," he found himself admitting, because lying about it when she already prompted it so easily...seemed not right? "There is magic." A twitch of his wrist sent his wand slipping down to his right hand from his sleeve and he looked to make sure they were alone. The cute waitress had just been called to the kitchen and she slipped inside. And then there was squealing.

His left hand slipped a cheap sheet of tissue from its silver holder and placed it in-between he and Gwen, then revealing his wand, he made a lazy gesture at it, and the thin thing crumpled, as if on fire, all on its own only to open up again a perfect lily. It was probably the one flower he knew how to do best, no thanks to a certain friend of his and his wooing...style...

"Does Little Anwen like flowers?" he let the new flower float to the air by instruction of his wand and he let it hover towards mother and daughter.

Gwen would never say she understood magic. Not really. There was a certain element of magic in the way Jack was immortal and in the way the rift worked in general. The supernatural existed in her world parallel to or in conjunction with the scientific. At the base level, it was all the same thing - just manifesting in different ways. The magic Remus was showing her was something she'd never dreamt of.

She watched in wonder as the lily formed and only her experience with Torchwood kept her from sitting with her mouth open. She was sure her face held an amazed expression, but at least she didn't look like a complete fool gaping at him. She plucked the flower out of the air, running her fingers over the petals. "I'm sure she would if she could see them," she said with a bit of a laugh. "She's a bit young for them yet."

When she had moved to the table, she'd intended on offering Remus help - or perhaps asking him for some. Since they were working on reforming Torchwood, they needed experts from various worlds, but Gwen had lost her nerve. Jack was the recruitment expert... and perhaps she needed to be more careful about blurting everything out to anyone she met. There were supposedly evil wizards running about and Gwen wouldn't know how to fight one of those off if she were standing in front of one, though she supposed a gun would be an effective way to stop anyone.

She took a sip of her coffee after setting the lily next to her plate. "So, Severus, what part of England are you from?"

In hindsight, Remus realized that what he'd done was not a very smart move. Just because he hadn't seen any form of an American Ministry of Magic didn't mean that he could just go about showing his magic to Muggles, aware or not. But then he had to wonder, is there an American Ministry of Magic? A Knight Bus didn't seem to exist in the city and if there was a magical governing body, then they weren't doing a very good job seeing as every attempt he'd done to Apparate to Hogwarts sent him to the train station, the Central Park, Gimbels and even in the lady's room.

Well, if there was an American Ministry, he would at least get a letter from them and that would get him somewhere. In the meantime, he slipped his wand back into his sleeve until it was caught in the hidden strap and picked up his fork to stab on a couple of fries. "I'm from London," he said. It was the first city that popped to mind and anyway, he'd been to London many times. "Did you come from there, too?" he asked before he ate.

Gwen couldn't help but snort. "Me? From England? Lord no. Cardiff - that's in Wales if your geography is terrible." She was starting to wonder if this Severus bloke weren't a bit slow.

She worked on eating breakfast between talking. She wasn't overly concerned about manners herself, though she wasn't a complete slob. "Have you been paying much attention to the bulletin boards since you arrived?" she asked. She needed to know how much he had seen or read or figured out on his own. She needed to know if he could be trusted.

Oh. Right. "I see," he said simply. Wales, of course. Not everything and everyone has to be from England or Scotland (in the case of his alma mater). Remus hid his embarrassment by taking a sip of coffee and two bites out of his skillet. So far, he was steadily polishing breakfast. He should really start being more aware of these matters...

"I haven't really done much beyond trying to find a way home since I got here," he admitted to her later as he finished his plate of fries. It was partly true, anyhow, as the other part concerned him looking for a place to hide. "I have heard of them, though, and how they are mm...magical...for the lack of a better word," he said to excuse his definition. Gwen should know what he's talking about, though, if she asked him about it. "But I have not really been very attentive to them..." That must make him sound like a child, he thought.

"You may want to take a look at them," she advised. "About two weeks ago, something started happening, creatures and evil-doers from various universes began appearing. We're not sure how or why, but there you have it. Some people have posted about what the creatures are, how they look, and how to fight them. It would be good information to have."

She took a sip of her coffee and paused in her advice as the waitress showed up to refill her cup. She smiled up at the young girl and thanked her quickly so that she wouldn't stay to chat. "The group I worked for, we're attempting to get started again, but it's difficult without the tools we're used to. This is the sort of thing we used to specialise in. If you run into anything you can't handle, post a message or try to get in contact with us, and we'll try to help."

Two weeks ago? Remus' brows arched. That was about the same time that he arrived. And at that moment, he'd come with two others, a witch who'd died and the Death Eater who'd killed her and died eventually by a freak accident. He didn't know what happened to them, he made it a point not to look for them in the Muggle papers if they ever did make an appearance there...

His cup was refilled before the waitress had left to entertain a pair of customers, mother and daughter, and he listened to Gwen as he chewed down his sausage. "Of course, I will," he assured her. "But...are they still around? These creatures I mean, and the evil-doers?" Could there have been more dark wizards than just the one?

"I'm sure they are," Gwen replied. She didn't know for certain, but it seemed unlikely that these creatures and people just popped up and then disappeared. "At least some of them."

Gwen was concentrating on her eggs and toast, now, having eaten all of the bacon. "We're fairly certain there's a colony of weevils - vicious aliens - in the sewer system now. As for the others, we'll just have to see. We're - Torchwood, I mean - trying to gather up more information on the types of creatures on the loose and how to defend against them, so if you can help with that at all, it would be appreciated. Or if you can just let us know if you run into anything that would be a great help as well."

Aliens in the sewers. Remus had no idea how to imagine them, as the only visual that keeps popping in his mind is a green troll marching down the the pipes. That was a thing for thought...

"We," he began after a sip of coffee, "back home, I mean, we are not new to creatures as well. We ourselves have many: trolls, ogres, ghouls...and I am not sure if Mu-- if you," he had nearly called her a Muggle, how embarrassing, "would know...but we have mm...dementors, boggarts...grindylows, kappas, we have many. I am yet to see any of them here but..." he looked around the table in search for something, his left hand moving indecisively as though to steal another sheet of tissue. "There is something..."

Giving up, he decided on simply talking to Gwen about this something. "Have you seen someone wearing dark robes this late? Long dark robes with...or they might give up their robes for something more ordinary-looking...but they might have a mark on their forearm." Remus paused as if to let Gwen understand what he was saying. "A skull with a snake slithering through an open mouth, a dark mark. Have you seen one?"

"No, I haven't," Gwen answered, "but someone posted about one of those boggart things a few days ago. Feed off fears, yes?" She hadn't been exactly sure how to pronounce the word when she'd seen it written, but hearing Remus say it made it click.

She finished off her breakfast before adding more. "I'll add them to the list of things to be on the look-out for. Is it a single person or a group?" If Gwen was going to properly look for Death Eaters, she needed a better idea of what she was looking for. She reached into Anwen's nappy bag and dug out a note pad and a pen - always prepared, she was.

She jotted down the description of the mark and waited expectantly for Remus to give her more info.

"Yes," Remus said quickly, a mite bit enthusiastically when she'd mentioned what the boggarts did. He was a little surprised that someone would actually know what a boggart was and he wondered if they were magical as he was. He felt a bud of excitement in the center of his chest. He wasn't the only wizard in New York!

"They are a group," Remus said as he further reduced his skillet. "They're called the Death Eaters." He pierced two sausage cutlets by his fork and had been about to eat them when Gwen refused to make a word or a noise of affirmation and the silence grew thicker...

"Oh," he coughed a little, "They are mm...they are evil wizards." He could kill himself for such a cheap start. "They...operate under a central figure, a man who cannot be named, and it is for him that they commit hideous crimes not only on fellow wizards but also, to the non-wizards alike." It was getting harder not to say "Muggles". "They kill, slaughter, torture...hypnotise...they have no respect for life and values whatsoever. They are horrible at the least. There is nothing they care to preserve but for whatever benefits them."

"Gotcha," Gwen replied as he finished. They sounded a bit like every other gang Gwen had ever heard of, at least when it came to gangs bent on world domination. "If they're wizards, I'm assuming they're not invulnerable to physical attack. I mean, if I had to I could shoot to kill, right?"

It was a difficult question to ask, but it was necessary. This was the sort of thing she needed to know if people were going to be able to defend themselves. "It doesn't matter if they have magic that can stop the bullets or whatever. I just need to know if someone without magic could stand a chance of killing them or if there's something special about them that makes them impervious to physical attack."

"All assumptions aside, yes," Remus said nodding. "As far as I know, physical injury can take them down. It isn't very complicated either, if you just know how to move fast or how to fool them." He took two bites from his skillet.

"Every one of them is a powerful wizard, and they are not ashamed to flaunt it. There is one particular curse that...I'd say they are known to use with abundance." Remus sipped his coffee. "We call it the Killing Curse, and not many non-wizards know of it. The incantation is Avada Kedavra. A flick of a wand, a flash of green, and all that is left is a corpse. It cannot be stopped. So the best chance to incapacitate a Death Eater is to do so before they can cast the curse."

Gwen was quickly writing the information Remus was giving her, a worried expression on her face. "There's nothing anyone can do to avoid this Killing Curse thing?" she asked. She couldn't help but wonder if it would work on Jack. Sure, it might kill him, but he'd resurrect wouldn't he? And if he did and they weren't expecting it, at least they'd have the element of surprise on their side.

"Does hiding behind something help? Can you move out if its path?" She needed to know, mostly, if it could skip around Jack to hit someone else or if hiding behind an inanimate object was an option. If not, it was a rather terrifying prospect. How could you fight someone who could kill you with a thought and a wave of a wand?

Remus took a moment to think of his response. "If you hide behind something...then of course, the spell won't hit you. But as for running away from it..." he shook his head, "I had never seen anyone even so much as attempt to do it." He'd say it was worth a try but really, what a foolish answer that was.

"Perhaps this won't happen anytime soon, anyhow," Remus attached almost quickly as he polished his skillet and drained his cup of coffee, the bitterness of the last drops making him crumple his face tight. "At least I do not think there is enough Death Eaters here yet for them to attempt to expose themselves." And he would be there to stop them before it even happened, he had sworn.

Gwen finished off her coffee and nodded to show Remus she was listening. "There's no harm in being prepared, yeah?" she said. As she finished up her notes she flipped the page in the notebook and jotted down a phone number labelled "Torchwood", ripped out the page and handed it to Remus. "If you do see any of these Death Eaters call that number and let us know. Or anything else potentially dangerous, either. I know it might seem foolish, a lady with a baby in a diner acting like she can help keep people safe, but trust me." She took her last bite of toast and pushed the plate away chewing thoroughly before continuing. "If you need any help with anything just give us a call. We'll be there as soon as possible."

Remus was amused. People kept giving him numbers but he had no idea what to use them for. He understood that Muggles used the details to contact someone but he wondered if Gwen might have a fireplace in her residence and if he might be able to find a Floo powder somewhere...

He accepted the paper, anyway, and folded it neatly to keep in his pocket. "I trust you, Gwen," he said to her as he looked up to face her. "And it's not foolish at all I think, a lady with a baby acting like she can save people. If anything, I really think you can do it." This coming from his experience with his best lady friend, who herself was a new mother. And anyway, Gwen seemed like she knew what she was doing.

"Thank you for this," he said with a gesture at the note. "I will contact you as soon as I spot something."

With all of her experience with alien cultures, it had never occurred to Gwen a telephone number could be as foreign to someone from another universe as magic was to her.

"Thank you," she said with a grin. "Listen, Severus, it was lovely chatting with you, but if I don't get back to the laundry my husband is going to send out a search party for me." She glanced over at the sleeping Anwen, just barely stopping herself from reaching to stroke her cheek. She didn't want to wake her up when she was sleeping soundly, though.

"I hope you won't think Anwen and I are terribly rude if we head off, now."

"Not at all," said Remus with a shake of his head. In fact, he ought to be heading off himself. Millie must be waiting with his soup and he'd hate to be rude to such a kind offer. "Take care of yourself and Anwen, Gwen. I hope we see each other again someday."

He stayed in his seat.
