Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
WHO: Gellert and Albus
WHEN: Now
WHERE: Wherever the wind takes us!
WHAT: Clearly I did not think this through.

Gellert was frustrated beyond all reason. The search for the Hallows had stalled, thanks to being catapulted into the future. All the trails had gone cold, he didn't even know where to begin to look for new information, and he was beginning to fear that it might be hopeless.

Obviously, it was vital that they return to their own time.

"Obviously," he said, pacing on the sidewalk in Hogsmeade, where they had come to enjoy the quaint village atmosphere because it was so crowded in the Ministry housing, "it is vital that we return to our own time."

Gellert paused and tapped a finger against his lips. He was wearing his jeans again, mostly because he could, and a rather fuzzy sweater that he feared made him look silly but which was quite warm. "But," he mused. "How to manage this. Perhaps! You should get a job in the Department of Mysteries."

It was almost impossible to read when Gellert was in one of his moods but that was fine as Albus was more than content, if a little exasperated, with watching Grindelwald pace around back and forth while he vented his frustrations, though somewhere in the back of Albus' mind he was sure Gellert was just talking to hear the sound of his voice. So far nothing he said had any point to it, leastwise since they came out of the rift.

With a quiet sigh, Albus closed the tome he'd been perusing and leaned casually against the shop wall, folding his long arms across his chest while his blue eyes trailed back and forth after his companion. A job in the Ministry? "I've considered it," he agreed mildly, hoping to satiate his impatient friend. "But I've also concluded that the Ministry is not looking for employees from a different dimension. Considering we've been here less than I month I don't think they're going to offer us jobs," okay, so much for pleasing Gellert but that was better than lying at any rate, right?

Gellert paused in his ranting when he actually got a response, and scrutinised Albus carefully. Naturally, he didn't mind that his friend often read in his presence instead of basking in it, because that was how Albus was and he wouldn't have him any other way. But perhaps. They could have a serious conversation.

He began plotting how to remove the book from the area. Just in case it was tempting.

"That is plainly ridiculous," Gellert said loftily. "We are two of the most brilliant wizards of the age. Any age. They'd be lucky to have us, and all we have to do is make sure they know it. I have been," he added in an aggrieved tone, "investigating this dimension, and I believe I am prepared to take the step of mingling with...these people. Aren't you?"

Naturally Gellert was not going to mingle if Albus did. No reason for both of them to do it.

He was far more clever than that and pulled the book back and away from Gellert's touch, giving him a clearly scrutinizing glance. People seemed more hopeful of Albus whenever he was around them, some regarded him with scorn but others.. well others seemed thrilled. It was a curious mixture and Albus was very intrigued as to why they behaved in such a fashion.

"Regardless of what you think, I'm sure we should read a biography or two." Maybe not though--Minister? Albus canted his head to the side and raised a brow, mulling over that notion. "Such a position would certainly help with our quest," he agreed and re-folded his arms across his chest. "You may be right, Gellert." There was a feeling in his belly that was ill-at-ease with his suggestion, but he was very efficient at ignoring that. "But lets finish this quest for the hallows.. before taking over the Ministry."

Gellert reached after the book again, covering it with a soothing pat of Albus's hand.

Of course, then Albus mentioned the damned hallows, and Gellert made a little huffy sound and flounced off down the street, toward the outskirts of town.

"But perhaps the way to get to the hallows is through political power!" he insisted. "I know that's not what we originally planned, but while you have been hiding in the library not getting enough sun - " It really was depressing, how pale Albus got sometimes - "I have been asking around and trying my best to find the slightest scrap of information that could give us a clue. But mention Godric's Hollow now, and you get nothing but swooning over people called Potters. It is truly distressing." He gave Albus an earnest look over his shoulder, like a puppy in need of comfort. "This would be easier in our own time," he finished, cajolingly. "Therefore, we must return to our own time. Therefore, we need the resources of the Ministry."

He did not vocalise his true fear, which was that they had already found the Hallows, in this dimension, that they had lost their shot. They needed to accomplish their quest in a place where there could be no competition with themselves.

"I hope you're far too busy too," he said matter-of-factly and laughed, pulling the book out of Gellert's reach, in fact all he did was lift his hand above both of their heads. His height definitely gave him an advantage over Gellert. Albus laughed good naturally and broke away from his friend's grasp. "I'm not done reading this, Gellert, when I've finished you can peruse the pages yourself." He knew very well it wasn't about the book, but he wasn't going to give Gellert the satisfaction. Or.. at least not yet. Albus smiled knowingly at Gellert and idly walked away from him and in the general direction towards their new Ministry approved housing.

"I will be very busy," Gellert said crossly. Silly Albus, and his tricks. When all Gellert was trying to do was help him to improve his focus. "Reading books. So allow me to begin, please."

The please sounded more like a command than a politeness.

He walked after Albus, catching up quickly, and tucked his arm through the other man's, leaning his head on Albus's shoulder - or as close to it as he could reach, anyway. "Must we go back?" he asked plaintively. "We could find a quiet place in the countryside, sit under a tree and read together. We could buy apples."

"Reading it to refresh my memory as I learned it quite well enough outside of Hogwarts. We had other things to learn, thank you very much, like Defense and Transfiguration," which were Albus' key strengths in magic.. though he too knew a fair bit of dark magic, enough to give Grindelwald a run for his money in the futuristic past. He of course, did not know about this yet. But dark magic, yes, Albus knew it but refused thus far in his young life to use it. Perhaps it would be necessary soon, but it was all for the greater good. Albus cast a sideways glance at his friend and smiled genuinely while throwing out the issue of Gellert's educational upbringing.. and how they'd managed to meet.

"I admire you always, Gellert.. now I just want to see you pick apples. It'll be a humbling experience for the greatest minds of the age... climbing trees like commoners to pick the fruits of Eden." Biblical passages.. or references rather, what did it matter?

"You would not need to refresh your memory," Gellert said, "if you had learned it in your youth, along with Defence and what to feed a flobberworm." He raised an eyebrow at that, daring Albus to comment. No one could defend that course. No one.

The Biblical reference earned quite a nasty eyeroll from Gellert, whose mother was a strict Catholic. He had little respect for her, since she had somehow managed to reconcile her faith with the fact of magic, yet called him a heretic when he suggested that some of the Biblical rules were arbitrary and that politics in the human sphere, perhaps, should not be governed by them. He had not been raised to question the veracity of God's Word, she didn't know where she went wrong; of course, he hadn't been raised to question those in authority, either, and certainly did. Was it his fault that everyone else was dimwitted?

Everyone but Albus. A true godsend, if one could believe in that.

"The fruit of Eden is unnamed," he said, curling closer into Albus's warmth. "Honestly, learn your Hebrew, Englishman."

"Because a wild flobberworm serves no purpose to a daily gardener, Gellert, in order to keep a herd of them we must learn to raise them properly and keep them alive to defend the food we sow." That was obvious, wasn't it? But regardless he was running out of reasons to keep flobberworms, they were a rather useless creature when one actually thought about it.

But back around to English and the Bible. "English is a Germanic Language with instances of the Romance languages intertwined, it is a beautiful manner of speaking and will one day become the universal language, and please, join a monastery and you may learn the dead language of Latin. But if you did so, I would be very, very lonesome without your company." The smile always won out and Albus almost lost himself in it, but that would be a dangerous pursuit with this man.

"I would like that very much," he said airily and smiled.

"Perhaps that might have been a useful waste of time in Herbology class, then, Albus. But certainly there are better things for students to do with their time than learn what end of the worm to poke the lettuce in, when they could find that in a book if they chose to keep a garden?"

Gellert sometimes thought that he would be a fantastic professor. Because clearly, he knew what was really important.

"The day it becomes a universal language is the day I top myself, Albus," Gellert said fervently. "Its rules are slipshod and too often broken, and each day it becomes less elegant, if that were possible. I am appalled at the way it is used in this time. It makes me want to slip into German just to make myself happy," he finished, doing just that. It made him smile, and he added, "Some days we can speak English under our tree, to make you happy. But not all of them, dear Albus."

"Then close your ears and go about your way merrily ignoring them?" he suggested offhandedly and was about to further his point with argument when Gellert caught him off guard with that kiss. He stopped in his steps and peered very sternly down his long nose at his friend, stunned momentarily by the inappropriate expression that the kiss signified.. and yet not altogether offended by it. His skin felt like it was on fire where those lips touched him and he wanted to press his fingers against the skin to soothe it..

What he did instead was reach up to brush back Gellert's curly, blonde locks, pushing them from his handsome face then idly brushing the tips of his fingers across a high cheekbone, caressing his face gently before he pressed in, closing the distance between them to return the kiss. He'd be a fool to say he did not entertain the idea of this.. Albus pulled away from the lingering kiss and peered into his friend's eyes, offering the briefest flash of a genuine smile before he lowered his hand and withdrew from Gellert. Albus didn't know what to say so he did not say anything at all.. he just stared for a moment then casually stepped around him, casting a suggestive glance back before continuing down the street in the direction of Gellert's apple tree.

Ha! Gellert had him in the palm of his hand.

But also, apart from the manipulation that had inspired him to kiss Albus in the first place, Gellert found that he actually had enjoyed it, brief as it had been. He cared deeply for Albus, who was his dearest friend in the world, the only one who truly understood him, despite their disagreements. It had never occurred to him before that he could do more than use Albus's obvious affection for him - that maybe he could try feeling something back.

Which would be weird, because Gellert was the very definition of a user.

He paused for a moment to sort a few things out, mainly the way Albus had smiled at him and the way that felt, and then pushed it all away, deciding that the most important thing was to get the book and therefore win. And he could use this to do that.

So he trailed after Albus, catching up with him at the end of the street and tucking into his side again. "You shouldn't leave me like that," he said lightly. "I was cold." This despite his fuzzy sweater.

It was entirely unfair how much of a hold Gellert had on Albus, all things considered. Maybe Albus had the same affect over his friend, but it never occurred to him to use the power for his own means. But, he was un-phased by Gellert's sly purpose just then, and concentrated instead on that pleasant feel of the man on his arm. They came upon the apple tree eventually and Albus was forced to let his friend go, that pretty smile touching the corners of his lips at his friend's suggestion that he might die.

"Nonsense, if you can't defeat the simple apple tree, then how do you intend to own Death's Wand?" he asked and turned away to shrug his long, thick cloak off of his thin shoulders. He let it float to the ground, but halfway there and a little bit of wandless magic, made it unfurl itself to settle neatly like a blanket on the grass beneath the tree.

"There," he said, "now, apples."

"I will have Death's Wand," Gellert said grumpily, spreading his fingers in a generically magical gesture. "I will take it with my awesome and terrible power. This apple tree, however, is not worthy of witnessing my magics."

And also, he was a bit of a show-off, and Albus knew full well that Gellert was a great wizard. But he'd never seen him climb a tree.

He gave an approving nod at the cloak that spread itself on the ground and slipped out of his own, flicking it at Albus without benefit of a spell. "Take care of that, my dear, won't you?" he drawled, before turning his attention to the tree. Fortunately it was not terribly large, and there were branches in clear reach; he calculated a path with ease and then scrambled onto the first branch, somewhat less elegantly than he'd hoped.

He blamed the sweater. It was catching on things.

"Hush," he instructed and shook his head at Gellert, "If you stop pouting and focus on the task no such thing will happen and you'll be down in a few moments. I could request the farthest and highest apple from the branches, but I'll make this easy and request the closest one instead," he said and laughed softly. He had a fair opinion of Gellert's tree climbing skills, he wasn't doing much of a funny job of it but there was the slight chance he would fall and then Albus might feel marginally guilty for goading him.. but that was yet to happen.

He leaned back and opened his book to the proper page once more, his brilliant, twinkling eyes turning back to peruse the pages. But sadly neither his mind focus, nor could his eyes as they twitched back to the blond every thirty seconds then away again and his mind.. well it was replaying their shared kiss. A first kiss, really, it wasn't so.. magical as women sometimes made it out to be but there was definitely something else there.. It had felt.. different.

"Gellert, hurry up." The words surprised Albus.

Oh, so he was laughing now? Gellert made a huffy sound and another reckless jump. He was well within reach of the fruit by now, but he had no intention of simply handing over the closest one as Albus requested; that would not be a fair test of his skills. He saw a group of apples that looked perfectly lovely, just a couple branches higher; it required some twisty movements and one soft curse under his breath when he smacked his knee on the tree trunk, but finally he was in reach, straddling a branch and hooking his ankles together so he wouldn't slip off.

He was rather peeved about Albus's obvious attention to the book, until he noticed his friend glancing up at him. And then Albus spoke, and Gellert was almost certain it had absolutely nothing to do with his desire for apples.

In response, Gellert plucked the first of the group and dropped it, aiming for the pages of the book; from this height, he missed, but only by a foot or so, and at least he didn't hit Albus in the head. "Why are you rushing me?" he asked mildly, as if he didn't know. "That desperate to get a sweet apple between your teeth, my dear?"

Don't you want me to do what you want? The sheer insolence of Gellert's tone irritated Albus and somewhere in the back of his mind he grew entirely too suspicious of his blond friend, what was this whole thing abou, after all? Albus' twinkling blue eyes darkened considerably and he stared up at the young man for a long moment before tearing his gaze away and slowly pushing himself to his feet. It didn't make him on level with Gellert and he actually had to look down at him but it felt better than looking up.

Though, he did feel ridiculously young just then. Did it really make any difference? Albus peered at Gellert's good looking face and his stupidly charming smile then very slowly reached up to push his fingers through the curly locks of hair, then as hesitantly as he had before, Albus leaned in and pressed his lips to Gellert's for a deeper kiss than the first. He wasn't sure what made him do it, he wasn't sure that he cared.. but what if Gellert cared? What if he didn't really want this? Dumbledore pulled away briskly while trying to look natural about what he'd done. He exhaled a soft breath and shook his head a fraction, "No, I wanted to do what I wanted to."

Gellert wasn't sure precisely what he'd done to prompt this, but he didn't exactly mind; he submitted to the kiss willingly enough, not trying to take charge. Not this time.

Unfortunately it didn't last even slightly long enough, and Albus pulled away a little too fast. Gellert made a soft whining sound when their lips parted, and narrowed his eyes at his friend. "And what about what I want to do?" he asked crossly before pressing close again, leaning up to bring their lips together more forcefully than before, his hand curling around the back of Albus's neck.

He was good at it and it stunned Albus in mostly every sense of the word, he didn't want to pull away from it but the screaming, burning feeling in his lungs forced him to. He inhaled sharply and peered with a flushed embarrassment at his friend. That was the most intimate he'd ever been with anyone and admittedly, if he could have chose the person to share that with it would be Gellert and it would be the man every damned time.

Albus brushed his long fingers through Gellert's blond hair, pushing it back from his handsome face with a gentle touch. He didn't know what to say, he was still feeling uncharacteristically awkward. Dumbledore lowered his hand and stepped away a pace to resettle himself on the ground, his hand straying back to his book even while his twinkling eyes fixed on Gellert.

"Sit down, you're making me nervous," he admitted and smiled faintly.

Apparently someone hadn't yet learned how to breathe while kissing. That was okay. Gellert could teach him.

He could teach Albus a lot of things, actually, and had every intention of doing so. Sooner rather than later, for preference, because Gellert was really quite insatiable. Also it was cold, and snogging was warm.

He leaned into Albus's touch like a stroked cat and followed him to the ground, with a shining grin. "Nervous, hmm," he said. "What is it that makes you nervous? Do you just not like it when I'm taller than you?" Curling up at Albus's side, Gellert rested his head on the other man's shoulder, pressing his lips lightly to Albus's throat.

It was only then that he noted Albus's protective hand hovering over the book. Damn, he hadn't forgotten yet...but for a moment there, Gellert had, which was unexpected.

This required thinking about. Later. After he had the book. And more kissing.

That was an odd question and quite inappropriate in Dumbledore's immediate thought. He peered at Gellert in mild offense, his head canting to the side for a brief moment before he looked away and shrugged a thin shoulder. "It is particularly soft," he said mildly, "and it's curly unlike my own. I could pull it instead of touch it," he said and demonstrated with a rude, albeit weak, tug of a golden lock of hair.

Albus paused after that and shifted uncomfortably, feeling uncharacteristically awkward and really just not liking it.. What was this? He frowned at himself and after another long pause and silent hesitation, Dumbledore opened his mouth to speak.

"Would you like for me to touch you elsewhere?"

Well, Gellert could hardly help being a big fan of things that most people would consider inappropriate - like premarital sex, and premarital sex with men, and premarital sex with men for the purpose of stealing a book.

Because that was the only reason he was contemplating it. Right?

"It is good hair," Gellert agreed. "I like yours too. Straight and such a beautiful shade." He smiled when Albus tugged at his hair and leaned closer.

The question was a surprise, coming from Albus, but not entirely - or at all - an unpleasant one. "Yes," he said. "Elsewhere, and everywhere. Does that bother you?"

Imagine that.

He was nervous. That's what it was.. not doubt or fear.. just nerves.. That was odd, it was a weird sensation and even weirder that it would be inspired by the one man who knew everything about Albus Dumbledore, every hope, aspiration, fear and dream... Albus canted his head to the side and peered into Gellert's stunning eyes. It was easier to mollify the emotion now that he pinned it down. It was easier to subdue. He exhaled a soft breath and kissed those fingertips very lightly.

"You undo me.. I can't think straight," he admitted and exhaled a soft breath. Really, just really. Stop trying to analyze everything Dumbledore, just do it and let it be done then think about it... mull it over later, for now.. just do. Albus pulled his friend closer and kissed him again, uncertain about where to place his hands just then but ultimately settling them at his waist.

That wasn't so bad. He was very warm and very solid and very, very soft when he slipped his fingers under the hem of that ridiculously fuzzy sweater.

Gellert's eyelids fluttered a bit at the unexpectedly romantic, unexpectedly sweet kiss to his fingertips, and he gave Albus a soft, sincere smile. He hadn't been treated with much gentleness in the past - he was too much of a wild thing himself, his past love affairs had been all frenzied, carnal lust - but this was different. Everything was different with Albus, who was brilliant and beautiful and wise beyond his years, the only person who had ever been able to match Gellert intellectually - and more than that, to challenge him.

"I think you undo me too," he said quietly, and leaned in to kiss back, fingers sliding around to the nape of Albus's neck to hold him close, his other hand resting for now at the small of the man's back. He shifted up into the touch at his waist, silently encouraging more.

It wasn't that he was not having a good time with his friend... it was that he was worried someone else would stumble across them in the middle of it and the last thing they needed was to have a scandal between them. Especially if Dumbledore was going to make a bid for Minister of Magic, so really.. going back to the privacy of their own home was better than sitting beneath this apple tree. Albus gazed at Gellert and offered a brilliant smile, "Come along child," he said with a wink and to further the playful insult, took Gellert's hand to lead him forward like he was a five year old boy.

He let him go though so Gellert wouldn't be reduced to that petulant childishness any further than he was already.
