Positive Comics Week: A tale of Batman
Greetings, [info]scans_daily!

It's been about eight months since I discovered s_d back on LJ, and since I'm going to be busy soon I thought I'd make my first contribution now. It also fits nicely with Positive Comics Week (which is still on, yes? Till the 20th, at least?).

This is from Batman: Gotham Adventures #22. It's seven pages from a 22-page book.

(It's bigger and clearer in context, honestly)

Tim has just gotten back to the cave from a night on the job. He says of Batman, "the second he saw the old lady get carjacked, he was off" and notes that Batman was "a man on a mission". However, he wants to know why, despite all that, Batman "doesn't take a minute to make sure the person's okay. It's like he's always Batman and never Bruce Wayne. All hero and no human." He hastens to add that he's not really criticizing Bruce, but that he just doesn't get it.

This is where Alfred steps in with a story, starting with when Dick first moved to the Manor. He says that Bruce didn't know how to act around a child, having not been around children and since "he'd hardly been a child himself". However, Bruce could certainly relate to the nightmares little Dick had every night. Thus Bruce takes it upon himself to do something about them and disappears for a few days.

Note: in the pages that follow, the ones with colour are present-day action and the sepia-toned ones are illustrations for what Alfred is telling Tim.

It turns out that Bruce was looking for Haley's Circus, which was apparently the source of Dick's nightmares.

Meanwhile, Bruce (on foot) has chased down the man/one of the men who tried to carjack the old lady he and Tim saved. The guy was driving near the docks, and Batman's sudden appearance in front of him causes him to slam on the brakes, sending the car off the nearest pier and into the sea.

:D

Awwww. ♥

And there it is :D. Hope you enjoyed the story and that all the scans were legible.

Aw, that's sweet.

Batman: "I saved your dog. Here you go."

Old woman: :D

Batman: "Sorry he's wet. That's because I also caused your car-jacker to crash your car into the river, nearly killing your dog in the process."

Old woman: D:

I just love stories that emphasize the fact that Batman, above all else, is a man of great compassion toward the innocent.

Time and again, another reason why the DCAU trumps all others.

Thank you.

And some pics of sheer awesomeness.

Scan #2, panel 3. You guys just volunteered to give BATMAN a ride on your truck to catch up to car jacker who almost ran that woman over. Boy Scout Medal of the Day.

Scan#4, panel 1. THAT is how you capture everything in the art about the Batman DCAU that makes it great.
- The billowing cape hinting at the true larger-than-life character,
- Elegant silhouettes determening a solid, stoic, powerful figure sure of his motives, actions and convictions
- Capturing that chaotic "moment" when everything seems to happen so fast yet happen as if time slowed down at the same time, the moment of truth, and when that time comes, the Batman does not fail.
- The presence of the Bat has already captured you, the reader and the fleeing criminal. That tiny line indicating a rope is just a manifestation of that will. And it's not the wrapping up of one leg, or both legs. It's his entire body. The hood has absolutely no chance to escape. And he is barely registering it in his eyes as the only thing that does escape is his breath.
- You don't NEED the eyes to pierce the night, to cry vengeance. The shadow of the Batman has reached out and made Bruce as supernaturally close to the "bogeyman" and wraith as he can be.
Nothing mere about THAT mortal.

Can we also point out how awesome it is in that, when offered said ride, Batman accepted it by standing on the roof of the truck? I like to think he insisted that he do that.

And insisted on doing it so stoically, too! It's absolutely hilarious.

It just hit me.

Ted is the name of the bear, and the name of the dog.

Didn't Dick have a stuffed elephant named Eleonore?

Dick also had a REAL elephant to play with at the circus called, IIRC, Zitka.

I thought Batman was going to give Dick a sponge bath.

That's only on the nights BATMAN has nightmares and needs to cheer himself up.

Dick looks, like, 18 with that teddy bear. Where was it, exactly, that Bruce went to find it?

Oh my god, thiiissss. Maybe it took him that many years to track down the circus/teddy bear, though.

Relative sizes! Bruce's hand barely doesn't cover the entire bear, while Dick holds it in both hands.

This manages to be such an amazingly sweet story without ever going saccharine or silly. This to me is Bruce. The woman holding her dog, and the big Bat-hand tucking Dick in. He's damaged and he can be dickish, but it's more because he loves so hard it hurts him than genuine lack of concern or inability to relate to others.

Clearly I really need to read more DCAU stuff.
