Amazing Spider-Man #601

Mary Jane sets a date with Peter, but when he gets there she never shows up.

There's also a back-up story by Bendis and Quesada, where Jessica Jones tells Peter how she was there when he fought Sandman at their high school (from Amazing Spider-Man #4; it turns out she was the brown-haired girl next to Flash), and that it inspired her to become a superhero.

Until the next time her life is threatened by a villain or old-age?

And then Peter chooses MAY instead of MJ?

And then MJ realizes she's got better things to do with her time.

The ridiculous thing is that had May been given a choice in all this she would probably have flat out told Peter to refuse it and called him an idiot for even contemplating it. I can't imagine her choosing her own life over Peter's and MJ's future happiness, not when she loves the two of them so much.

Now, this is both entirely true and yet entirely what Peter has always screwed up on. May could have handled being told it back in '66. Peter just didn't think so.

Thing is, she did. Peter did this seance thing to talk to the comatose May, and May flat-out told him to go ahead and let her die because she'd led a long an happy life, and it wasn't worth Peter's happiness to keep May alive.

... Seriously? FFS! I know Peter is a prat at times but WTF?! What issue was that in because I've not seen it...

It was in the last few issues of Spectacular Spider-Man -- sorry, don't know them off the top of my head, but they're probably compiled in the "Back in Black" trade ... which was actually a good storyline in my opinion other than it leading to "One More Day!"

"Back in Black" does have the distinction of having an even more useless Reed Richards, as well as Dr. Strange. Reed invents interdimensional portals and cures alien viruses, and Dr. Strange is both the most powerful magician in the world as well as being an actual medical doctor; and yet neither of them can help with a simple gunshot wound. Seriously, Dr. Strange, just cast "Cure Heavy Wounds," or Reed, whip up a Fantasti-Heals-Gunshot-Wounds-Device, and we'll be done for the day.

That said, Peter throwing that jeep across a street at like the fifth floor of a building was pretty damn impressive.

Oh, wait, that was in Back in Black? I thought that was in OMD for some reason. My bad!

Besides those two, there's also the X-Men. I mean, Elixir REGENERATED SOMEONE'S HEART. I'm pretty sure Aunt May would not be a problem. Plus, imagine how Otto would react if Spider-Man went to him hat in hand and said, "May Parker is dying and I need your help?" (That would actually be an awesome story.)
