The Seventh Sign

Two comics with Bryan Hitch art came out this week, surely signalling some imminent cataclysm:  three scans from Captain America: Reborn #1 and four from Fantastic Four #568.

First, in Reborn, the nerd squad assembles in the Mighty Avengers' HQ to discuss the tech behind whatever happened to Steve:

Also, Venom's there, but he's not in-panel.

Over in Fantastic Four, the seemingly omnipotent Marquis of Death and his minion subdue the Fantastic Four; the Marquis takes Reed on a little tour:

Reed says no.

They move on.

The Marquis didn't expect him to go for this either, so he takes him then to Area 87, where Clyde Wyncham, an incredibly dangerous supervillain is kept; Wyncham came from an alternate reality where he is the only mutant, but also has brain damage, and so a system designed by Reed keeps him subdued.  Tying into Millar's "Old Man Logan", apparently the villain revolt in the future set Wyncham lose, and he awoke, "his mind restored...

The way I look at it, Norman IS pretty good at what he does - he's been Spidey's top villain for years now, remember, and he's come up with some fairly clever schemes during that time - but he thinks he's much better than he actually is. It's a bad idea to underestimate him, but it's pointless to overestimate him.

I agree, Norman *is* good at what he does - screwing with Peter's head. Because he knows his secret identity.

But can you really put him in the same class as the Avengers? Spider-man was uniquely vulnerable because he was unwilling to give up his secret identity until very recently (and then retconned away). Norman was laced into Peter's history through the death of Gwen Stacy and his son's friendship with Peter. Norman was effective because he was a very personal foe.

Now, if it's the Kingpin, or Baron Strucker, or Zemo, those are people that I can find some root for the MU to be wary about.

Again, Norman's rise is, as I see it, due to the military-industrial complex that laces American politics. As we've seen, people who have come from a corporate setting don't necessarily (i.e. rarely) translate well to a government setting - so my only glimmer of joy in having Norman Osborn be at the head of National Security is so he can be, hopefully, erased once and for all.

Because, again, seriously. Norman Osborn. Claim to fame? Killing Spider-man's girlfriend. After that, resurrecting, and playing mind games with Spider-man ever since. How's that compare to, oh, the Red Skull. Ellis made him work because he was clearly insane and fixated with Spider-man still.

He's not in the same CLASS as the Avengers, no, but he does have a superteam of his own working for him, and a LOT of power, influence, and information at his command. Just how long he can handle these things is another issue, but at the moment, he's certainly powerful enough and paranoid enough to take seriously. He may not have that unique relationship with the Avengers that he has with Spidey, but that doesn't mean he's an incompetent, and ANYONE who has enough power at their command should not be underestimated.
