The Seventh Sign

Two comics with Bryan Hitch art came out this week, surely signalling some imminent cataclysm:  three scans from Captain America: Reborn #1 and four from Fantastic Four #568.

First, in Reborn, the nerd squad assembles in the Mighty Avengers' HQ to discuss the tech behind whatever happened to Steve:

Also, Venom's there, but he's not in-panel.

Over in Fantastic Four, the seemingly omnipotent Marquis of Death and his minion subdue the Fantastic Four; the Marquis takes Reed on a little tour:

Reed says no.

They move on.

The Marquis didn't expect him to go for this either, so he takes him then to Area 87, where Clyde Wyncham, an incredibly dangerous supervillain is kept; Wyncham came from an alternate reality where he is the only mutant, but also has brain damage, and so a system designed by Reed keeps him subdued.  Tying into Millar's "Old Man Logan", apparently the villain revolt in the future set Wyncham lose, and he awoke, "his mind restored...

Aside from some disturbing thoughts about the Marquis having no apparent clothing OR genitalia, am I supposed to be finding him impressive here? Because I don't think it's working.

Same here. Blah blah millions of realities destroyed yadda yadda master of space and time hey could you wake me up when there are boobies involved? Thanks, man. It's like hearing that Roland Emmerich is going to do another film where everything goes to hell, again. And Thanos has another gizmo that will make him master of the universe, and he won't blow this one, honest... what's that you say, Lucy? Place-kicking practice? What the hell, football season is almost here, anyway... just don't pull that ball away, I'm on to you this time!

Look, it provides a motivation for him being such a tool without much further explanation needed.

A billion years in which he found nothing more constructive or interesting to do than pursue a vendetta against endless alternate versions of Reed Richards and blow crap up while pontificating about how very awesome and dark he is.

Yawn.

I did have some faint hope that this might turn out to be an interesting character. Oh well.

I hope they don't kill the Marquis off, he's a fantastic villain. Far more interesting than, say, the Hood or Norman Osborn. Reminds me of Morrison's sadly short-lived take on Magneto in "Planet X", stripped of all pretense to be revealed as the mass-murdering monster he really is.

Making a villain utterly devoid of any kind of layers doesn't count as fantastic for me, unfortunately.

I'm not really sure how much repeat-value he has, at least from what we've seen so far; among other things, his powerset is such that however he's defeated will presumably be a one-in-a-million chance. Those sorts of characters tend to suffer pretty marked decay in repeat appearances.

...sorry, isn't this the guy they specifically set up by having Doom bow to him just to artificially give him villain cred?

And now they've given him got powers and are making him try to do silly psychological things to heroes, who might as well be facepalming and rolling their eyes?

.......to... each... their own?

" Anyone else, it's their choice. "

And yet you're not willing to tell the multiverse-traversing maniac to kill his past self, an act he's apparently willing to do. Weird. (Unless you were expecting him to be all " Yeah... no ", which is probably a good thing to expect.)

This is a tiny grouch in the scheme of things, but I'm tired of grouching about big things, 'cause that always gives me a headache. Dear Assorted Colorists: Can we decide already whether Pym's costume is black, red, or somewhere in between?

Disappointed.

The one thing I like here is the "third way" thing with Reed. Reed ought to be one of these guys like Tom Strong whose mind goes that way.

I have decided I will buy 5 copies of the issue where Doom begins to kick this guys ass. I will buy more copies if there is a splash page of him screaming something about Doom while doing so. That is all.

They are STILL not selling me on Osborn.

Seriously Pym, it doesn't do to understimate, oh, Richards, or Spider-man, or Tony Stark. You wouldn't be too off if you decided to let Norman plot away in some dirty dank corner somewhere besides the Hudson. I mean, what's the worse that can happen? Another elaborately constructed plot displaying Norman's knowledge of Parker's secret identity, with probably a reference to Gwen Stacy, a moment of madness, before being punked by a pissed off Spider-man.

Let's face it - Spider-man is damn impressive and has a history of hitting above his powerclass on a regular basis, but he's not exactly Doctor Strange, Reed Richards, or Captain fuckin' America. Osborn wouldn't have the faintest clue as to how to take down any of them. Maniacal corporate losers dressed in green and purple togs are the least of their worries.
