Even though Al was in Salem, Edward hadn’t given up on going out on his patrols. He’d stopped going on them for a short while until he was sure Al would be safe and had something to do back in the hotel. It was a way for him to continue to learn about the kinds of creatures that roamed around Salem. Reading books about mythical monsters was all well and good but it only helped so much. Vampires were a prime example of that. There was more than one kind and they each had their own weaknesses and strengths. The practical beat out the theoretical and Ed didn’t like to be caught unprepared when he could help it. So when Al went about the hotel, Ed headed out and kept his phone close just in case Al needed him.
He picked a random direction and headed that way. He avoided starting out in the same place every night so it would be easier for him to stumble upon something new. So far vampires seemed to outnumber the other supernatural things running around, or they were the murdering assholes of the supernatural world, and they were the ones Ed wound up fighting most of the time. It became sort of routine for him to end the night with either a pile of dust, blood and gore, or an actual body to dispose of. The latter were the worst, at least the other two strains of vampire were more or less easy clean up.
Ed was hoping to run into something new like the ghoul he’d taken out a while back but he had no such luck this night. As he walked he heard the screech of tires as a car came to an abrupt halt in front of a really old looking church. He glanced around then quickly ducked into an empty alley way before the driver could see him. Ed waited a beat before he stealthily poked his head out to take a look. The block was empty aside from the car with only the streetlights keeping the dark at bay and allowing him to see what the hell was going on because his gut was telling him something wasn’t right.
He watched the guy get out of the car, noticed his skin was the kind of pale he only saw on vampires, figures, and make way for the trunk. Ed wasn’t entirely surprised to see him pull out a girl bound in rope and lug her easily over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes without batting an eye at the struggle she put up. Nope, not surprised in the least but still very much pissed. He liked to claim he didn’t give a damn about anyone he didn’t know but the truth was that he did care and he didn’t stand idly by when he could help and the sadistic vampires in Salem brought out a mean streak in him.
Ed waited for the vamp to go into the church before he finally walked out of the alley and followed him inside. The place wasn’t huge like some of the cathedrals he’d visited in Amestris but it was a decent size and was a two story building. He kept his steps quiet to keep them from echoing and taking away the element of surprise. He followed the trail of open doors until he finally caught up to the vampire opening a door to the basement. It was a weird place to take his victim to but Ed was seldom phased by anything anymore.
“Hey, jackass! Put the girl down and I might consider letting you walk away.”
The vampire spun on its heel, fangs already out, as he went from glaring to Edward to outright grinning at him. That was the problem with these idiots, they never once thought he was an actual threat. It was fine by him, it just made it that much easier to stake them.
“Go away, kid, play hero with someone else, I’m a little busy here.”
He snorted and turned his back on Ed like he wasn’t there. It made Ed grind his teeth, his temper flaring up. If that’s the way he wanted to play it, fine by him. Ed moved closer then sunk down to one knee, clapped his hands, and laid his palms flat on the stone floor. Electricity burst from his hands and the stone rose up and encircled the vampires legs up to the shins. That stopped the bastard dead in his tracks and before he could do more than curse in surprise, Edward took out the wooden stake he had tucked in his red coat and drove it straight into the moron’s heart. The vamp burst into dust but Ed was fast enough to catch the girl before she hit the floor.
He made quick work of getting her out of the ropes and helped her up onto her feet. She was obviously still shaken and Ed bet that the sooner she got back home, the sooner she could start to feel better. “Are you okay? Do you have anyone you can call?” When she nodded, Ed handed her his cell phone and let her make her call then waited out in front of the church with her until a friend of hers came by and picked her up. He stayed put until he saw the car turn and was finally out of sight.
It was his cue to go and keep on patrolling but there was a lingering feeling since he’d set foot in the church that there was something more going on than a vampire wanting to eat someone in a holy space. Ed glanced back over at it and his stomach clenched. It was still early and maybe he’d missed something.
