[The arena is dim today, the light of the torches giving way to a shimmering sort of half-light as one approaches. The ambiance is more that of twilight than dawn, and it flatters the smiles on the statue of the Twins high above. Tiny white lights flicker and disappear in the air, swaying and dancing like fireflies, but to any who examine them closely, they seem to lack substance.]

[What stands in the rest of the arena, however, remains a mystery- for towering to an improbable height near the foot of the stairs is a gate of ornate iron scrollwork, and the wall attached encircles the arena, blocking off the space closest to the statue. Lanterns of colored paper and whimsical metal shapes have been hung from the top of it, adding a splash of color- here Cepheus purple, there Hydra green, and all the teams represented in their turn. From above the gates, there rings out a voice that is pleasant and more than a little amused.]

I only call it like I see it. You don't believe you're being paranoid, fine. Well I don't believe I'm stupid, either, but you keep insisting that I am. But that doesn't mean you don't care about me, the same way it doesn't mean I don't care about you.

... You always ... read only the worst into what I say. How is that not paranoid? I didn't mean to say you were soulless. There was a "we" in that sentence. If you're soulless, then I would be too. What I meant was that every time we make awful decisions in those games, we lose a little part of ourselves. Myself included.

I just want you to stop mis-interpreting what I say, and to stop treating me like a child when you're just as prone to making mistakes as I am, and everyone else. Why is it okay for you to pick on my faults but not the other way around?

. . . The only reason I ever get mad at you is because you ignore some warning we give you to protect you. Like the time you wandered around with that Lepus after I warned you about them. Or when you wanted to talk to Jace. —And I'm not saying it's okay, but at least I'm not doing it because I'm fucking worried.

You always fight us on this shit, and one day you're going to make "friends" with some psychopath like Rezo and it'll blow up in your face. But you never want to listen to anything we say even though we've seen this shit happen before. We're always just wrong to you.

I listened to you on the first two points, didn't I? I haven't gone near Lepus or Canis since then. But-- I want you to understand, too. I had my whole life dictated out to me, Scowl-- from birth to death, with no choice in the matter. Told who I had to be, who I could and couldn't make friends with, who I had to marry, what job I was going to do when I graduated, what clothes I had to wear, what hobbies I had to have-- I'm really... I'm sick of it. This is the first time I've ever had the freedom to make my own decisions. And maybe they're bad decisions! But you have to let me make them! Or I'm only going to continue to be some naive kid who's been sheltered all his life by others...

I just... I've listened to you about everyone else. I just want the freedom to choose this one friend you dislike. I don't expect you to trust me, or to like him, but...
