Derek wasn't the most friendly or outgoing person. He generally preferred his own company to that of... pretty much anyone else. Sure, he had people he considered friends, but they were few and far between. Most of them were in Beacon Hills though and that's why he was back in the town he had left behind so many months ago. There was too much pain here, too many bad memories, and he was tired of the weight of it hanging around him.

But there was a threat in town and he couldn't let that go. Especially after his own run-in with the chimera. He understood why Argent called him and knew that it was going to take all hands on deck to eliminate this threat.

He was standing in the parking lot of the high school, listening to Stiles yammer on about... something. Honestly, Derek tuned out most of the time when Stiles talked. A familiar scent caught his attention and he scanned the area, eyes falling on the girl he met the week before when he arrived back in town. Judith. She saved his life, of course he remembered her name. In fact, he had been meaning to give her a call to check in and just hadn't had a chance.

Without bothering to excuse himself, he walked away from the group and jogged across the lot to greet her. "Hey."

School was nothing but a hindrance. Judith had more important; more pressing things to be doing, but here she was in school because the deal between she and her dad was that if she didn't go, she didn't hunt and Judith knew he meant it. The town needed her help too much to just sit on her ass in a classroom learning useless shit she'd never need in real life, but it was better than being benched indefinitely for disobeying.

The bell rang and Judith loaded up her backpack, jogging down the stairs to the first floor and then out of the school, heading for the student parking lot. She'd been onto something, she knew she'd been onto something and if she didn't act fast, then she was going to lose her window of opportunity and that chimera was going to hurt someone else. She and Derek had tracked it down to two potential suspects that day he'd been injured and, while she should've been doing homework in the library during study hall, she'd been texting with Carl to nail down the potentials every day since. Carl had gotten a hit today. Judith needed to get there.

She didn't notice him at first, because she was on a mission, making a beeline for her truck, bag slung over one shoulder and hair pulled up in a sloppy bun at the top of her head because she'd tossed it up with the mirror in her locker so that she could just get going.

The sound of Derek's voice caught her attention and she slowed, looking over as he jogged up to meet her. "Well lookit that, he lives," she drawled, a little smile tugging at the corners of her mouth as she reached the truck and pulled out her keys to let herself into it. "Thought maybe you done got tangled up with another one when I wasn't there to save your ass, or somethin'," she added, looking over her shoulder at him, half-teasing and half-expressing her upset that she hadn't ever heard from him again. She'd liked hanging out with Derek. Judith didn't like people very often, so when she decided that she did, that stuck with her.

"I managed just fine for more than twenty five years without you," Derek reminded her, though he did manage a sheepish smile of apology for not getting in contact for the past few days. "Where you off to in such a hurry?"

Despite her obvious skills, he didn't like the idea of Judith going off and chasing down the chimera on her own. They had taken him down and he was a lot sturdier than she was. She was one of the only humans he actually liked and he didn't want to see anything bad happen to her.

He glanced over his shoulder, noticing the strange looks he was getting from Scott and the rest of his Pack, but he paid them no attention. It would probably make sense to introduce Judith to them at some point, but he wasn't sure he wanted to subject her to their nonsense.

"And yet my first impression was of you lyin' on the ground needin' your giant, werewolf ass hauled back to your apartment by a girl," she teased. Judith pulled the door of her truck open, tossing her backpack into the barely-there back seat under which her favorite gun of the arsenal she kept in the vehicle was hidden.

Looking back over at Derek, Judith lifted her eyebrows. "I got a lead. You want in? Cuz if not, I'mma have to catch up with you later, mi amigo, I gotta go," she said.

The invitation surprised Derek and, after another glance over towards the folks he had been talking to, he shrugged and walked over to the passenger door of her truck. His SUV would be fine in the parking lot for a while and the others could deal with him taking off.

"Where we headed?" he asked. After a moment's pause, he asked, "Do you think we need backup?"

As much as he wanted to keep her away from Scott's Pack, if they needed extra bodies, he would call them in for support.

Derek started to move around the hood of the truck to get to the passenger side, so Judith took that as a yes and climbed into the driver's seat, shutting the door behind her.

She started the vehicle and looked over at him. "I ain't stupid, Derek," she sighed, rolling her eyes in spite of the little smile that threatened to crack the serious look on her face. "I got back up. My people know where I'm goin' and they got eyes on it. I go alone, but I ain't ever really alone. Someone's always a couple minutes away."

She pulled out of the parking lot and started down the road. "She's working right now, local coffee house. Her shift oughta be up in the next twenty minutes, give or take, then we follow her."

"Sounds good," Derek said, pulling his phone out of his pocket and turning it to silent. It was already blowing up with text messages and phone calls with everyone wanting to know where he was going and who the girl was he was with. He had no interest in telling them anything until absolutely necessary.

He was one of those people who preferred driving over being a passenger, but given that he already trusted Judith to drive his vehicle, he was able to lean back in his seat and almost relax. "I could go for some coffee."

Who were her people, he wondered. Did they know she was keeping company with a werewolf? He supposed it didn't much matter as long as they didn't come after him.

At a stop light, Judith looked over at Derek and lifted her eyebrows. "...oh really?" she asked, looking interested. Judith gave a facial shrug. "You wanna expose yourself to the threat for caffeine you can't even feel? I really wonder about you sometimes," she laughed.

It only took another couple of minutes before she reached the center of town, parallel parking across the street and back a ways from the coffee shop where the chimera was working, trying to blend in, in between murders.

Judith leaned back in her seat, shutting off the truck for the moment and looked back over at Derek. "So, what? Are you Team Grimes, now, instead'a Team McCall, or you just had nothin' better to do today so you figured you'd help out on both sides since we all got a common goal?" she wondered, curious rather than accusing.

Derek chuckled. "She's hardly likely to attack me in the middle of her workplace," he pointed out. "And it might help if I can get a lock on her scent." It would make following her easier, if nothing else.

"I have never been Team McCall," he said. "I prefer to consider myself Team Derek."

He would work with whoever was necessary to get done what needed to get done. That's why he was friends with Chris Argent. It's why he created his own betas, and got two thirds of them killed.

"Yeah, well," Judith countered with a shrug, "she could lock a scent on you, too. I dunno what she is, yet. I just know who she is. But if you're goin', I'll take an Americano," she added with a smirk and a batting of her eyelashes just for the sake of amusement.

"Team Derek," she repeated, a facial shrug to follow, "yeah, all right then. Whatever you say. We ain't got any supernaturals on our team and we still seem to be takin' out more'a them things than McCall's pack can be bothered to. They're slow. Real slow. ...we could use you, Derek, y'know? Ain't ya ever wanted to be part of a group that had your back just as much as you got theirs? Them guys, they ain't like that, I know it. They ain't even got each other's backs half the time from what I hear and seen, they sure as hell ain't gonna have yours. Not like I would. Have."

She leaned back again, looking out her window at the coffee shop. "But maybe if not, at least Team Derek can help us out a little now and then, huh? When he ain't so busy needin' saved," she added, nudging at his arm with her elbow.

Judith had a point that the chimera could pick up his scent, and he wasn't sure if it was worth the potential risk to get some coffee and get her scent. He had a few minutes to decide though, so he settled back and listened as Judith spoke.

Derek preferred to keep his connections with other people fairly superficial. It made it a lot easier to deal with them if you didn't become emotionally involved. Losing his family definitely colored his feelings there. "I am more than willing to help you out any time, Judith," he said.

Nevermind that he preferred to keep a distance between him and other people. Judith had somehow managed to worm her way past his defenses within minutes of their first meeting. Derek wasn't sure how much of that should be chalked up to the fact that she saved his life and how much was just the kind of person she was.

With a small smile and a nod, Judith drummed her fingers gently against the steering wheel. "Well, that's good to know," she told him genuinely.

Judith let a comfortable silence fall between the two of them for a while as they waited. Digging into that unwillingness to give an allegiance wasn't really worth it; maybe Derek really did just want to freelance his way through so that when the chimera thing was over, he wouldn't feel obligated or roped into the next inevitable big bad and Judith could respect that. It was exhausting to do what they were doing, both physically and mentally. She couldn't very well begrudge him wanting an easy out when the current threat was neutralized.

"That's her," she spoke up suddenly, seeing the girl whose image Carl had text messaged her earlier walk out of the shop. Judith started the truck but made no attempt to pull out of the parking spot just then. "With the blonde hair and the white top." She looked over at Derek in a quick glance. "Ready?"

One of the reasons Derek actually didn't mind Judith's company was that she didn't feel the need to fill silence with unnecessary chatter. If only Stiles subscribed to that theory. He had a lot of reasons for not wanting to truly align himself with either McCall's Pack or Judith's family and he was glad she didn't dig further since they were reasons he would prefer not to share. Primarily that he didn't want more people in his life that he cared about because that meant the possibility of pain of losing them.

When Judith did speak, he looked up and narrowed his eyes at the girl she pointed out. On the surface, she seemed like a typical teenager, but then again, so did a lot of other people who were anything but.

"Ready," he said, sitting up a bit straighter in his seat so he felt more prepared for action. "Do we have any idea where she's going?"

Once the chimera had gone just out of Judith's range of sight, she stiffened slightly. This was the hard part. Pulling her phone out, she scrolled through the pictures Carl had sent and found one of the girl getting into her car, unaware that her picture was being taken. As soon as Judith saw the car pull out into the street, she pushed on the brake and shifted into drive, waiting to pull out behind her.

"Right now? Don't know, hopefully to meet her pack," she replied. "We ain't gonna have at her if she does, but I can take pictures and send 'em back so my team knows who the rest of 'em are. But the point's just followin' her and tryin'a find a way in. Gettin' her by herself is the hard part. Once we got that, I can take her out with one shot, like I did that one that got a hold'a you."

Derek nodded. It was a solid plan and he was impressed by Judith and her people. Part of him wanted to introduce her to Argent, figuring that the older man could offer some excellent hunting tips thanks to all of his experience. Another part of him didn't want her to get mixed up with anyone connected to Scott's Pack. They were kind of a mess these days and he wasn't sure what the hell happened between them.

"I could always lure her away," he suggested. "Bait a trap. She'd probably come after a werewolf."

Glancing briefly in Derek's direction before putting her focus back on the road and turning at the first light to follow the chimera, Judith's eyebrows lifted.

"Or maybe a pretty face," she pointed out, willing to give credit where it was due. "Are you sure you wanna do that? We don't know what she is, Derek, we ain't got that far yet..." The question and reason behind it came with more uncertainty than Judith would've liked to have him hear. Most of all, she didn't want to be the hunter that used a werewolf for bait and lost him...especially if that bait was her only real friend.

Her reference to his pretty face made Derek smirk. He knew well enough that he wasn't her type and it amused him that she would joke that way. "I'm not sure of anything, Judith," he admitted. "It was just a suggestion."

They were in uncharted territory with these chimera. They didn't follow the regular rules of the supernatural because of their unnatural, scientific nature and that meant they were more of a challenge than anything Derek had come up against in the past. It also meant taking risks that they wouldn't normally take to neutralize the threat.

"How many people do you have backing you up?" She had been pretty cagey thus far about her group, but it would help to know what they were working with.

"I don't know if I like it," Judith admitted, shrugging a little, without looking at him. She liked Derek, genuinely. She wouldn't send Carl in as bait, so why should she send someone else? If Derek really wanted to do that, she'd take advantage of the opportunity and let him, but she sure as hell wasn't going to encourage it. Not when they didn't know for sure what creatures were spliced to create this particular chimera.

Derek's question didn't phase her. It wasn't that she'd intentionally been evasive so much as she just didn't talk about the team much unless there was a reason to. Now there was. "My brother today. Usually also my dad, sometimes a cop friend or two of his. But today, 't's just you, me, and Carl watchin' our backs from afar."

She followed the car down another stretch of road and started to feel a little twitchy. "She's goin' outside town, I can feel it. I just got that feelin' in my gut and I ain't gonna be able to follow her too far like this or she's gon' notice..."

Derek noticed the change in her demeanor and shifted in his seat so he could study her more closely. "We can call this off right now if you have a bad feeling," he said. "Maybe we need to catch her as she's leaving her next shift at the coffee shop."

Snatch her, tie her up, toss her in the back of the truck, and take her somewhere secluded so they could question her and figure out what was going on. It would give them the upper hand and they could arrange for more backup than one human.

Shaking her head, Judith's brow creased. "Nah, it ain't a bad feeling like that, I just feel like we're gonna goddamned lose her and I can't keep up with a fuckin' car on foot," she said, frowning as she stopped at a sign, slamming a frustrated hand on the steering wheel before gesturing outward. "Dammit..." Just as Judith thought, the car turned again, heading down a lesser used stretch of dirt road off the main drag.

There weren't any other cars out on this road this time of day, so Judith let the car idle at the stop sign, looking over at him. "Take our chances or no?" she asked, valuing his input just as much in that moment as she would've Carl's. Derek was from here. Maybe he knew what was down that road and Judith hadn't ever been.

There was no possible way they could follow the girl down that road without being made. And they had no idea who or what was waiting for her at the end of it. If he was alone, Derek would probably go on foot and at least get the lay of the land, but he didn't want to put Judith at risk and he knew that she wasn't going to let him proceed alone.

"No, let's leave it for now," he said. "Find out when she works next and we'll set something up."

He would scout out this location later though. Or send McCall and his Pack to do it. The more intel they had, the better.

"How about I buy you that Americano? You can ask whoever is working when your good friend... uh, whatever that chick's name is... works next since you're so bummed about missing her today."

Frowning, Judith dropped her back dramatically against her seat. "The pack's probably down there," she groaned. Her lips pressed together in thought and she looked over at the road, drumming her fingers on the steering wheel again.

Carl would go. Rick would go. If she was alone, Judith wouldn't even think twice about going.

She fidgeted in her seat as Derek offered an alternative and she shook her head a little without even realizing that she was doing so. "We're missin' a big opportunity if we do that," she pointed out, not necessarily refusing the offer, but also not agreeing to it, either.

Derek figured the Pack was there too and that was precisely why he was hesitant to proceed with just the two of them. He genuinely liked Judith and knew that he wouldn't be able to live with himself if she got hurt on account of him. He had already failed to save too many people that were important to him and he had no interest in adding to that list.

He could figure out later just exactly when Judith became someone he considered important.

"It could be suicide to go down there," he said. "We have no idea how many of them there are or what kind of abilities they have."

He wasn't wrong, Judith knew that. She sighed and gave a slight tilt of her head, half a shrug without her shoulders. They didn't know how many were down there or what their abilities would be; no idea if it was just her or whether the whole pack of what was left of the chimera were down there.

"Or it could be a shot at genocide," she countered thoughtfully, referring to the chimera as the race on the table.

Again, she drummed her fingers on the steering wheel and took a deep breath, letting it out in a soft sigh. "I don't know, Derek, I wanna go down there, I ain't gonna lie," she admitted, looking over at him. "What about your people? What if I text Carl and you text McCall and them? We can just get a head start while they're headin' out here..." she suggested.
