Derek figured the Pack was there too and that was precisely why he was hesitant to proceed with just the two of them. He genuinely liked Judith and knew that he wouldn't be able to live with himself if she got hurt on account of him. He had already failed to save too many people that were important to him and he had no interest in adding to that list.

He could figure out later just exactly when Judith became someone he considered important.

"It could be suicide to go down there," he said. "We have no idea how many of them there are or what kind of abilities they have."

He wasn't wrong, Judith knew that. She sighed and gave a slight tilt of her head, half a shrug without her shoulders. They didn't know how many were down there or what their abilities would be; no idea if it was just her or whether the whole pack of what was left of the chimera were down there.

"Or it could be a shot at genocide," she countered thoughtfully, referring to the chimera as the race on the table.

Again, she drummed her fingers on the steering wheel and took a deep breath, letting it out in a soft sigh. "I don't know, Derek, I wanna go down there, I ain't gonna lie," she admitted, looking over at him. "What about your people? What if I text Carl and you text McCall and them? We can just get a head start while they're headin' out here..." she suggested.

It wasn't like Derek wanted to turn tail and run. He was trying to be responsible though. Healing from a broken leg hadn't been fun and he had no intention of repeating that, let alone letting Judith get hurt.

He considered her suggestion. The others were probably pissed at him for taking off without a word and ignoring their texts and calls, but that didn't mean they wouldn't be there if he called and told them what was up. That had the downside of introducing them to Judith and he wasn't entirely sure he wanted that either, but if it was a choice between keeping them safe or not, that was the lesser of two evils.

With a sigh, he nodded. "Yeah. Okay. We call for backup and then we proceed on foot. Cautiously."

Judith gave Derek a patronizing little smile. "Well, now you done taken all the fun outta it," she joked, rolling her eyes as she shifted in her seat to pull her phone out of her pocket. "Course we go in cautiously and I done figured we'd have to go on foot, we can't just go drivin' in and expect it'll go well for us, I ain't stupid, come on now."

She shot off a text to Carl to loop him in and waited for a text back. "He says he's ten minutes out right now, he done found where she actually lives; he's been stakin' that out."

"Gee, sorry I'd like to keep you alive," he replied sardonically, scanning his phone for a response. "Looks like Scott and the others can be out here in about fifteen minutes."

That meant they should probably wait at least five before making a move. "Should we just recon here and then set a trap at her place?"

Judith grinned a little. "Yeah, well, you do owe me one after all," she teased.

McCall's group was further away and while Judith wasn't exactly thrilled at the idea of meeting them in this context — at all — she'd take what she could get. She'd give it five minutes before she was itching to get out of her car and go.

"Yeah, I reckon that's probably the best way to do it," she agreed, finally moving her foot off the brakes and onto the accelerator to pull a U-turn and park the car a few yards back from the turn in the road down which the chimera had driven. This time, when she stopped, she put it into park.

She looked over at Derek again. "You goin' in bare or you wanna gun? I got three handguns, two shot guns, and my crossbow, but I'm takin' the crossbow."

Derek hated guns, but he knew how to use them, thanks to Braeden and his brief stint without werewolf abilities. They were more effective at a distance than his claws and fangs, so he figured it couldn't hurt to have one.

"I'll take one of the handguns," he said. "Maybe we can pick them off without even getting close."

It never went that easy, but he could hold out hope. At least it wasn't one of Scott's plans. Scott was never allowed to make the plans.

Judith nodded and turned in the seat, wiggling her way out of it and into the backseat. "Handgun, you got it," she said, pulling open the window that separated the cab of the truck from the flatbed that was covered. "Here, hold onto my waist so I don't go fallin' in. I'd just go around the back like normal but I'm thinkin' it's better if we're not slammin' doors and all that," she said, leaning through the window to reach for her bag in the flatbed.

"And yeah, that's usually my plan, anyways. The further away I can get in my shot, the better. That's why I like—" she paused to grunt a little as she stretched to reach for her own weapon of choice, "—the crossbow."

She was already starting to lean through the window and Derek had to drop his phone to reach up and grab her before she fell through to the back of the truck. This would look so awkward if anyone saw them and he was glad that her brother and McCall's Pack weren't closer. He didn't want anyone to get the wrong idea.

"I learned how to use a gun a while back," he said. "Human friend of mine was a mercenary. Taught me a lot."

Sometimes he missed Braeden. They had a great thing going while it lasted.

Once she'd managed to get the gun out of the bag and had reached her crossbow and the quiver of arrows, Judith used her abdominal muscles to straighten her body enough to slip back out of the window with little extra help.

She handed Derek the gun, holding it by the barrel so that he could take it by the grip. "Yeah? And yet you're askin' for the handgun when I got shotguns. You could learn more," she pointed out as she got herself back into the driver's seat. "If you wanted."

Judith actually found, once the words left her mouth, that she kind of liked that idea, finally being the teacher instead of the student.

"You wanna teach me?" he asked. It couldn't hurt to be more proficient with weapons. His mother would probably roll over in her grave, but using the fangs and claws wasn't always possible. Sure, guns made things a bit more difficult since they were the domain of the humans, but they had their uses.

The idea of hanging out with her more wasn't terrible either. For some reason, Judith was one of the few people he could actually tolerate.

"If you wanna learn," came Judith's casual response, lifting her eyebrows as she looked back at him. "But I ain't gonna teach you more guns. You know how to use one, you know how to use 'em all, really. Mostly just a couple of main differences, but it ain't nothin' you couldn't learn in five minutes if you paid good attention. You wanna learn with me, you're gonna learn archery, 'cause it's better. Just as long a range, hell of a lot quieter," she replied.

Judith looked at the clock on the dash. "All right, I ain't sittin' here no more. You comin' or you wanna wait for them guys?" she asked.

Derek chuckled. "Okay, sure, why not?" It wasn't like learning archery could be a bad thing, right? Even if he preferred to fight with his fists and not a weapon, knowledge was power and all that.

Rather than answer, he opened the door and slipped out of the truck, tucking the gun into the waistband of his jeans. They waited long enough. Backup shouldn't be too far away and he certainly wasn't about to let Judith do this alone.

"Let me go first."

"Then yeah, I'll teach ya," Judith confirmed, following his lead by getting out of the truck and pushing the door closed rather than slamming it. She hefted the quiver onto her back and pulled an arrow out of it, loading the crossbow as she moved with him.

At his point, Judith looked back at him with incredulity. "Why?" she asked in a low voice, down near a whisper. "You got a thing for bein' a damsel in distress or somethin'?" she teased. But all the same, she gestured for him to go ahead. He had the heightened senses; she'd be an idiot not to let him take the lead.

Apparently he was never going to hear the end of it about their first meeting. One time he gets himself hurt and has to be rescued by a human. Not that he was really complaining. Judith was much cooler than Stiles.

"Shh," he said, holding his finger up in front of his lips before turning to start slowly and carefully making his way up the lane. He made sure he stuck close to the tree line so they had some kind of cover. It made the going a bit tougher and he had to snap a few low hanging branches out of the way, but after a few minutes, a clearing appeared in front of them.

He held up his hand, indicating that Judith should stop, and closed his eyes, trying to identify how many unique scents he could pick up. He looked over his shoulder and held up four fingers, hoping she would figure out what he was communicating.

While she doesn't really need the shushing, Judith doesn't give him any shit for it, instead just giving him a nod of acknowledgement and staying close behind him, her crossbow up and ready. She admittedly felt a little bad that he was having to break all those little twigs and branches because it meant that they were making noise that sensitive ears like his would be able to hear. But he didn't seem to mind it, and didn't appear to be worried, yet, so she let it be.

Judith stopped at his gesture and she waited while he, presumably, scented the air around him to try to discern how many of these damn things they would be going up against.

Derek looked over his shoulder and held up four fingers. Judith nodded. Four of them. That was two for each of them; that wasn't so bad, so long as they continued to have the element of surprise. Next, she nodded for him to keep going while looking uncertain as if rather than saying "keep moving," she was asking whether that was in his plan.

Derek held up one finger, indicating that she needed to wait a minute while he formulated a plan. So far, they still did have the element of surprise on their side and they had backup on the way. He and Judith should be able to dispatch of this Pack expediently and stop them before they hurt anyone else. Anything they could to do cripple the chimera and stifle the Dread Doctors would count as a win.

The girl they followed was having a very intense conversation with a guy who looked like he didn't weigh a hundred pounds soaking wet. The other two were examining a pile of... something he couldn't quite make out and weren't even paying attention to their friends.

He pointed at Judith and then at the girl they followed and the little guy. She should be able to take them out pretty easily with her crossbow while Derek crept closer to the other two and tried to figure out what they were working on. He wasn't crazy about splitting up, but it was the obvious solution.

Judith waited patiently for Derek to give her some kind of communication as to what their next steps were going to be. Her eyes moved to follow his finger and she gave a solemn nod to let him know that she understood and was ready.

While Derek didn't appear to be super comfortable about the idea of splitting up, Judith was used to working on her own and this was nothing new. She had six arrows, so she could miss twice and still have enough arrows to take every last one of them out if something went wrong and Derek was overtaken.

"Psst," she hissed softly to get his attention one last time. When he turned to face her, Judith whispered with next to no sound, knowing he'd still be able to hear it. "Tell me when." She raised her crossbow a few inches to indicate what she meant. Then she nodded one more time to let him know that that was all she needed.

Derek pulled out the gun and checked that the safety was off and it was ready to fire. It still wasn't his weapon of choice, but he was glad he had it right now. If they could pick these guys off without getting too close, that was the safest option. Of course, there was also always the chance that bullets and arrows wouldn't take them down. That's why there was backup on the way.

A quick jerk of his head in the direction of a tree with better cover for Judith and he was off to his own hiding spot, keeping a close eye on her and her progress. Once they were both settled in and ready, he held up a hand and counted down using his fingers.

When he got to one, he took a deep breath and held it as he stepped out and opened fire on the chimera.

Following the subtly communicated suggestion, Judith started to move, slowly and carefully until she was able to get behind the tree he'd indicated. It was a shame she wouldn't have time to climb it, because she could definitely get in a better shot, but the branches were too high for her to reach on her own and it was a little too late to ask Derek for a boost.

Instead, she aimed the crossbow at the girl they'd followed, since she was the first priority in this mission and she gave Derek a sideways glance, waiting for his signal.

When he got to one, Judith's eyes shifted back to double check her aim and then she pulled the trigger, sending the arrow directly into the back of the female chimera's neck, dropping her. It might not kill her, but it'd slow her down enough for the moment and Judith didn't have a lot of time to react. She pulled another arrow and loaded it quickly, taking aim on the gangly male chimera while she still had the element of surprise — and the chimeras' subsequent flash of shock and confusion — on her side.

She managed to take him down with one shot, not missing the aim for his head and she loaded up the crossbow again, but didn't have time to actually line up a shot by the female had dragged the arrow back out of her throat and had started — too quickly — toward her.

Instead of taking another shot, Judith lunged forward to meet the girl halfway and swung the metal frame of the crossbow in the air, slamming it into the girl's face with all the force she could muster, knocking the girl back a few steps and slowing her down again.

Derek managed to get in two quick head shots thanks to Braeden's tutelage and both of his targets went down fast. He wasn't sure if they would stay down, but when he realized that Judith was in trouble, he decided not to worry about that for the moment and rushed across the yard to help her.

She got off a good hit with her bow, but the girl was already moving towards Judith again. Derek stuffed the gun in his jeans and focused on letting his claws grow, eyes glowing bright yellow. He growled and launched himself at her, claws automatically aiming for the carotid artery in her neck.

Judith took advantage of Derek's distraction of the beast to set up and aim the crossbow and carefully followed their movements to try to get in a shot without hitting Derek.

As the two of them tangled, Derek on the offensive and the chimera attempting to dodge repeated attacks, Judith noticed belatedly the girl growing a tail. "Derek, move!" she finally yelped, half in panic mode because the last time she'd seen a tail like that on one of those damn things, it'd been part-kanima. "Tail!" she warned and, as soon as Derek's head was cleared of her shot, Judith took it.

The arrow embedded itself in the girl's left eye with a sickening, watery thunk and Judith let out the breath she didn't realize she'd been holding, gasping for air right afterward. She reached back and grabbed one of her arrows, loading the crossbow again, quickly, as she panted for air, wanting it to be ready, just in case one of the damn things wasn't quite as dead as they thought. "Derek, you okay?" she asked, to make sure the tail hadn't swiped him; that he wasn't seconds away from dropping, himself, paralysed from venom neither of them had expected to have to avoid. She hadn't seen it happen, so she hoped that meant it hadn't, rather than that it had been a blink and miss it situation.

The shouted warning was enough to prevent Derek from being swiped by the tail. Fuck, these chimera were more of a challenge than the nogitsune. He was relieved when the arrow pierced the girl's eye and he bent over at the waist, resting his hands on his knees for a moment.

His ears didn't pick up any movement other than Judith, so he was hoping that meant they had actually dispatched this group. "I'm fine," he said. "You okay?" He straightened up and gave her a critical once over, looking for any sign that she had been injured in the melee.

Judith was rigidly on alert until Derek said that he was fine, because he collapsed forward a little and she suspected that if he'd smelled any other potential threat, he wouldn't have relaxed like that. Judith leaned back against the nearest tree and lowered herself onto the ground, breathing heavily now that she felt like it was safe enough to rest to catch her breath.

At his question, she gave him a tired smile and nodded against the tree trunk, her eyes closing in a slow blink. "Yeah...yeah, I'm okay. I ain't hurt. Shit...no wonder Carl done had her as the priority hit," she huffed, a barked laugh that had little sound left for her breathlessness. That was an exaggeration; Carl had her as the priority hit because he knew for certain that she was a chimera and there was no room for doubt. He hadn't known what she was. "Christ all fuckin' Mighty," she sighed, pushing herself back up to her feet after catching her breath. "We done make a pretty good team, you know that? Thanks for savin' my ass. Guess we're even now and I ain't allowed to pick on ya no more."

Derek chuckled. "Somehow, I don't think that's going to stop you, Judith," he said. But he was relieved that they were both okay and had managed to take out this cluster of chimera.

Which of course was when all of their backup seemed to arrive. He heard Stilinski's piece of shit Jeep sputtering to a stop up the road a way and knew they would be here within minutes. "Sounds like the cavalry is here. You want to actually meet them?"

If she wanted to take off, he wouldn't blame her.
