One of the reasons Derek actually didn't mind Judith's company was that she didn't feel the need to fill silence with unnecessary chatter. If only Stiles subscribed to that theory. He had a lot of reasons for not wanting to truly align himself with either McCall's Pack or Judith's family and he was glad she didn't dig further since they were reasons he would prefer not to share. Primarily that he didn't want more people in his life that he cared about because that meant the possibility of pain of losing them.

When Judith did speak, he looked up and narrowed his eyes at the girl she pointed out. On the surface, she seemed like a typical teenager, but then again, so did a lot of other people who were anything but.

"Ready," he said, sitting up a bit straighter in his seat so he felt more prepared for action. "Do we have any idea where she's going?"

Once the chimera had gone just out of Judith's range of sight, she stiffened slightly. This was the hard part. Pulling her phone out, she scrolled through the pictures Carl had sent and found one of the girl getting into her car, unaware that her picture was being taken. As soon as Judith saw the car pull out into the street, she pushed on the brake and shifted into drive, waiting to pull out behind her.

"Right now? Don't know, hopefully to meet her pack," she replied. "We ain't gonna have at her if she does, but I can take pictures and send 'em back so my team knows who the rest of 'em are. But the point's just followin' her and tryin'a find a way in. Gettin' her by herself is the hard part. Once we got that, I can take her out with one shot, like I did that one that got a hold'a you."

Derek nodded. It was a solid plan and he was impressed by Judith and her people. Part of him wanted to introduce her to Argent, figuring that the older man could offer some excellent hunting tips thanks to all of his experience. Another part of him didn't want her to get mixed up with anyone connected to Scott's Pack. They were kind of a mess these days and he wasn't sure what the hell happened between them.

"I could always lure her away," he suggested. "Bait a trap. She'd probably come after a werewolf."

Glancing briefly in Derek's direction before putting her focus back on the road and turning at the first light to follow the chimera, Judith's eyebrows lifted.

"Or maybe a pretty face," she pointed out, willing to give credit where it was due. "Are you sure you wanna do that? We don't know what she is, Derek, we ain't got that far yet..." The question and reason behind it came with more uncertainty than Judith would've liked to have him hear. Most of all, she didn't want to be the hunter that used a werewolf for bait and lost him...especially if that bait was her only real friend.

Her reference to his pretty face made Derek smirk. He knew well enough that he wasn't her type and it amused him that she would joke that way. "I'm not sure of anything, Judith," he admitted. "It was just a suggestion."

They were in uncharted territory with these chimera. They didn't follow the regular rules of the supernatural because of their unnatural, scientific nature and that meant they were more of a challenge than anything Derek had come up against in the past. It also meant taking risks that they wouldn't normally take to neutralize the threat.

"How many people do you have backing you up?" She had been pretty cagey thus far about her group, but it would help to know what they were working with.

"I don't know if I like it," Judith admitted, shrugging a little, without looking at him. She liked Derek, genuinely. She wouldn't send Carl in as bait, so why should she send someone else? If Derek really wanted to do that, she'd take advantage of the opportunity and let him, but she sure as hell wasn't going to encourage it. Not when they didn't know for sure what creatures were spliced to create this particular chimera.

Derek's question didn't phase her. It wasn't that she'd intentionally been evasive so much as she just didn't talk about the team much unless there was a reason to. Now there was. "My brother today. Usually also my dad, sometimes a cop friend or two of his. But today, 't's just you, me, and Carl watchin' our backs from afar."

She followed the car down another stretch of road and started to feel a little twitchy. "She's goin' outside town, I can feel it. I just got that feelin' in my gut and I ain't gonna be able to follow her too far like this or she's gon' notice..."

Derek noticed the change in her demeanor and shifted in his seat so he could study her more closely. "We can call this off right now if you have a bad feeling," he said. "Maybe we need to catch her as she's leaving her next shift at the coffee shop."

Snatch her, tie her up, toss her in the back of the truck, and take her somewhere secluded so they could question her and figure out what was going on. It would give them the upper hand and they could arrange for more backup than one human.

Shaking her head, Judith's brow creased. "Nah, it ain't a bad feeling like that, I just feel like we're gonna goddamned lose her and I can't keep up with a fuckin' car on foot," she said, frowning as she stopped at a sign, slamming a frustrated hand on the steering wheel before gesturing outward. "Dammit..." Just as Judith thought, the car turned again, heading down a lesser used stretch of dirt road off the main drag.

There weren't any other cars out on this road this time of day, so Judith let the car idle at the stop sign, looking over at him. "Take our chances or no?" she asked, valuing his input just as much in that moment as she would've Carl's. Derek was from here. Maybe he knew what was down that road and Judith hadn't ever been.

There was no possible way they could follow the girl down that road without being made. And they had no idea who or what was waiting for her at the end of it. If he was alone, Derek would probably go on foot and at least get the lay of the land, but he didn't want to put Judith at risk and he knew that she wasn't going to let him proceed alone.

"No, let's leave it for now," he said. "Find out when she works next and we'll set something up."

He would scout out this location later though. Or send McCall and his Pack to do it. The more intel they had, the better.

"How about I buy you that Americano? You can ask whoever is working when your good friend... uh, whatever that chick's name is... works next since you're so bummed about missing her today."

Frowning, Judith dropped her back dramatically against her seat. "The pack's probably down there," she groaned. Her lips pressed together in thought and she looked over at the road, drumming her fingers on the steering wheel again.

Carl would go. Rick would go. If she was alone, Judith wouldn't even think twice about going.

She fidgeted in her seat as Derek offered an alternative and she shook her head a little without even realizing that she was doing so. "We're missin' a big opportunity if we do that," she pointed out, not necessarily refusing the offer, but also not agreeing to it, either.

Derek figured the Pack was there too and that was precisely why he was hesitant to proceed with just the two of them. He genuinely liked Judith and knew that he wouldn't be able to live with himself if she got hurt on account of him. He had already failed to save too many people that were important to him and he had no interest in adding to that list.

He could figure out later just exactly when Judith became someone he considered important.

"It could be suicide to go down there," he said. "We have no idea how many of them there are or what kind of abilities they have."

He wasn't wrong, Judith knew that. She sighed and gave a slight tilt of her head, half a shrug without her shoulders. They didn't know how many were down there or what their abilities would be; no idea if it was just her or whether the whole pack of what was left of the chimera were down there.

"Or it could be a shot at genocide," she countered thoughtfully, referring to the chimera as the race on the table.

Again, she drummed her fingers on the steering wheel and took a deep breath, letting it out in a soft sigh. "I don't know, Derek, I wanna go down there, I ain't gonna lie," she admitted, looking over at him. "What about your people? What if I text Carl and you text McCall and them? We can just get a head start while they're headin' out here..." she suggested.

It wasn't like Derek wanted to turn tail and run. He was trying to be responsible though. Healing from a broken leg hadn't been fun and he had no intention of repeating that, let alone letting Judith get hurt.

He considered her suggestion. The others were probably pissed at him for taking off without a word and ignoring their texts and calls, but that didn't mean they wouldn't be there if he called and told them what was up. That had the downside of introducing them to Judith and he wasn't entirely sure he wanted that either, but if it was a choice between keeping them safe or not, that was the lesser of two evils.

With a sigh, he nodded. "Yeah. Okay. We call for backup and then we proceed on foot. Cautiously."

Judith gave Derek a patronizing little smile. "Well, now you done taken all the fun outta it," she joked, rolling her eyes as she shifted in her seat to pull her phone out of her pocket. "Course we go in cautiously and I done figured we'd have to go on foot, we can't just go drivin' in and expect it'll go well for us, I ain't stupid, come on now."

She shot off a text to Carl to loop him in and waited for a text back. "He says he's ten minutes out right now, he done found where she actually lives; he's been stakin' that out."

"Gee, sorry I'd like to keep you alive," he replied sardonically, scanning his phone for a response. "Looks like Scott and the others can be out here in about fifteen minutes."

That meant they should probably wait at least five before making a move. "Should we just recon here and then set a trap at her place?"

Judith grinned a little. "Yeah, well, you do owe me one after all," she teased.

McCall's group was further away and while Judith wasn't exactly thrilled at the idea of meeting them in this context — at all — she'd take what she could get. She'd give it five minutes before she was itching to get out of her car and go.

"Yeah, I reckon that's probably the best way to do it," she agreed, finally moving her foot off the brakes and onto the accelerator to pull a U-turn and park the car a few yards back from the turn in the road down which the chimera had driven. This time, when she stopped, she put it into park.

She looked over at Derek again. "You goin' in bare or you wanna gun? I got three handguns, two shot guns, and my crossbow, but I'm takin' the crossbow."

Derek hated guns, but he knew how to use them, thanks to Braeden and his brief stint without werewolf abilities. They were more effective at a distance than his claws and fangs, so he figured it couldn't hurt to have one.

"I'll take one of the handguns," he said. "Maybe we can pick them off without even getting close."

It never went that easy, but he could hold out hope. At least it wasn't one of Scott's plans. Scott was never allowed to make the plans.

Judith nodded and turned in the seat, wiggling her way out of it and into the backseat. "Handgun, you got it," she said, pulling open the window that separated the cab of the truck from the flatbed that was covered. "Here, hold onto my waist so I don't go fallin' in. I'd just go around the back like normal but I'm thinkin' it's better if we're not slammin' doors and all that," she said, leaning through the window to reach for her bag in the flatbed.

"And yeah, that's usually my plan, anyways. The further away I can get in my shot, the better. That's why I like—" she paused to grunt a little as she stretched to reach for her own weapon of choice, "—the crossbow."

She was already starting to lean through the window and Derek had to drop his phone to reach up and grab her before she fell through to the back of the truck. This would look so awkward if anyone saw them and he was glad that her brother and McCall's Pack weren't closer. He didn't want anyone to get the wrong idea.

"I learned how to use a gun a while back," he said. "Human friend of mine was a mercenary. Taught me a lot."

Sometimes he missed Braeden. They had a great thing going while it lasted.

Once she'd managed to get the gun out of the bag and had reached her crossbow and the quiver of arrows, Judith used her abdominal muscles to straighten her body enough to slip back out of the window with little extra help.

She handed Derek the gun, holding it by the barrel so that he could take it by the grip. "Yeah? And yet you're askin' for the handgun when I got shotguns. You could learn more," she pointed out as she got herself back into the driver's seat. "If you wanted."

Judith actually found, once the words left her mouth, that she kind of liked that idea, finally being the teacher instead of the student.

"You wanna teach me?" he asked. It couldn't hurt to be more proficient with weapons. His mother would probably roll over in her grave, but using the fangs and claws wasn't always possible. Sure, guns made things a bit more difficult since they were the domain of the humans, but they had their uses.

The idea of hanging out with her more wasn't terrible either. For some reason, Judith was one of the few people he could actually tolerate.

"If you wanna learn," came Judith's casual response, lifting her eyebrows as she looked back at him. "But I ain't gonna teach you more guns. You know how to use one, you know how to use 'em all, really. Mostly just a couple of main differences, but it ain't nothin' you couldn't learn in five minutes if you paid good attention. You wanna learn with me, you're gonna learn archery, 'cause it's better. Just as long a range, hell of a lot quieter," she replied.

Judith looked at the clock on the dash. "All right, I ain't sittin' here no more. You comin' or you wanna wait for them guys?" she asked.

Derek chuckled. "Okay, sure, why not?" It wasn't like learning archery could be a bad thing, right? Even if he preferred to fight with his fists and not a weapon, knowledge was power and all that.

Rather than answer, he opened the door and slipped out of the truck, tucking the gun into the waistband of his jeans. They waited long enough. Backup shouldn't be too far away and he certainly wasn't about to let Judith do this alone.

"Let me go first."

"Then yeah, I'll teach ya," Judith confirmed, following his lead by getting out of the truck and pushing the door closed rather than slamming it. She hefted the quiver onto her back and pulled an arrow out of it, loading the crossbow as she moved with him.

At his point, Judith looked back at him with incredulity. "Why?" she asked in a low voice, down near a whisper. "You got a thing for bein' a damsel in distress or somethin'?" she teased. But all the same, she gestured for him to go ahead. He had the heightened senses; she'd be an idiot not to let him take the lead.

Apparently he was never going to hear the end of it about their first meeting. One time he gets himself hurt and has to be rescued by a human. Not that he was really complaining. Judith was much cooler than Stiles.

"Shh," he said, holding his finger up in front of his lips before turning to start slowly and carefully making his way up the lane. He made sure he stuck close to the tree line so they had some kind of cover. It made the going a bit tougher and he had to snap a few low hanging branches out of the way, but after a few minutes, a clearing appeared in front of them.

He held up his hand, indicating that Judith should stop, and closed his eyes, trying to identify how many unique scents he could pick up. He looked over his shoulder and held up four fingers, hoping she would figure out what he was communicating.
