Stepping on the greens in her designer jeans
Who: Lucy and Max
What: Mini golf whoo!
Where: Mini golf course
When: September 14, evening
Warnings: It seems highly unlikely at this point.
Notes:

Putter and blue golf ball in hand, Lucy was ready to take on the course. Well, mostly. This was her first rather physical outing since she ended treatment. How this was going to go was anyones guess. But Max seemed nice. She hadn't known him very long, but she felt confident in her assessment. Anyone who was willing to go for random mini golf outings had to be a good person, right?

She surveyed the course with a critical eye. She wanted to know what she was going to be up against. The first hole, as usual, was fairly straight forward. The obstacles loomed off in the distance in various forms. She looked over at her golf buddy. She'd never consider him competition. This was a team! They were going to take on the course together and conquer it. Winning wasn't important. Getting through it and saying they had beat it was.

"You ready for this?"

Max had been gifted with a red club and a lime-green golf ball. Anyone who had issues with color coordination probably would've lost it at such a combination, but he was just happy to be doing any form of gaming.

If memory served, the last time Max had played mini-golf had been during a rare outing with his grandfather, potentially for his birthday. The game had ended quickly when he had whapped the ball so hard that it had gone flying into a nearby freeway, bouncing neatly off of the hood of a car going eighty miles an hour and disappearing for good. Max had gotten upset and had only been appeased when the golf course had given him twenty five dollars worth of tokens for their arcade, where he had happily plugged away at virtual sports and gun fights for the rest of the afternoon.

Hopefully, today wouldn't prove as traumatic.

He tossed the offendingly lime-green ball into the air with his right hand, catching it easily while the red golf club was slug across a shoulder. "Uh, yeah. This should be cake." Or so he hoped. How hard could it be to hit a ball into a little hole? "Ladies first?" He waved at the first putt, standing off to the side so Lucy could give it a shot.

Lucy lined up her shot. It was pretty straight forward since this was only the first hole. She wrinkled her nose and looked over at Max.

"I'm not very good at this."

Lucy didn't have much of a competitive streak in her. It was really much more fun when everyone won and everyone was happy. When she was little, her favorite part of these outings had always been the trips for ice cream afterward. Mini golf was fun, but ice cream was better!

With her tongue poking out of the corner of her mouth, she gave the putter a few gentle line up swings, then tapped the ball. It rolled right down the green and just shy of the hole. She huffed and glanced at her companion.

"See? I told you I'm not good at this. Your turn!"

He followed Lucy in putting his ball down and lining up his shot. Max's face adopted a much more confident and perhaps serious look than had Lucy's, but as his ball rolled down the green, it too looped around the hole to end up five inches away from it.

"Well these things are meant to be harder than they look," he replied, the serious mask he'd been wearing lost in favor of a smile. "I mean, there's a little hill there and it speeds up your ball if you hit it too hard to begin with! And this is just the first hole."

He took up a spot off to the side, waiting for Lucy to take her next turn. In the back of his mind, he couldn't get rid of the thought that she seemed somehow familiar.

"Lucy, we haven't met before, right? Like, were you around the night of the blackout?"

She walked down to where her ball rested and lined up her next shot. With a gentle tap, the ball rolled right into the hole. She grinned and clapped her hands together, obviously very pleased with herself.

She retrieved her ball and moved off to the side, thinking about what Max had asked. She had felt something similar, an odd sense of recognition. It was a very diluted version of what she had felt with James. Maybe there was something in the air system at Pax that made people feel like they knew one another. Why anyone would want to do that was beyond her. Maybe it was some sort of science experiment.

"I don't think so? I mean, if we did I don't remember. Sort of. Like...I kind of feel like I remember you, but not really? That doesn't make any sense, does it?"

"No, but I think I know what you mean..." He moved to where his lime-green ball waited, and carefully tapped it in for a birdie. Retrieving his ball, he followed Lucy over to the second hole. This one offered a swinging beam over the goal point, every few seconds or so denying access to anyone who didn't time their club's swing correctly. Max could see it being a frustrating obstacle for just a second course.

"Could have seen each other in the lobby - or maybe in the elevator?" But the feeling was different than a simple glance-and-gone; not necessarily like he'd known her his whole life, but had certainly been aware of her. Max frowned, taking up a position to the side to allow Lucy to go first as before. He counted the time between the pendulum swings.

"Looks like ten seconds, so I'd count to ten and then swing; aim for it when the pendulum covers the hole."

"It's kind of weird, isn't it? The whole building seems to be full of people I feel I know, but I totally don't remember meeting them."

Lucy set her ball down and eyed the obstacle and counted to ten, out loud, like Max had suggested. Her ball made it through just barely, narrowly missing the beam, and it rolled into the hole. After a quick squeal of celebration, she retrieved her ball and stood off to the side so Max could take his turn.

She thought about what he had said. Had she seen him in passing? It was entirely possible, but it didn't feel complete enough. She felt too comfortable with him for their meeting, if it had happened, to be a mere passing glance.

"I don't know," she finally responded to his question. "I don't think that's it. I feel like it would have been more than that if it had happened." She furrowed her brow. Articulating this was hard. You would think after multiple instances of this she would be better equipped with ways to explain it. Instead, it became more and more difficult.

"Nice shot!" Despite being competitive in nature, Max was never one to be a sore loser. If someone played well, he was usually the first in line to congratulate them - after all, he'd want others to do the same for him. Quickly, he placed his ball on the mat and lined up his shot.

"The whole building, huh? Who else have you met that seemed familiar?" He didn't tack on that he hadn't met any others who could seem like he should know them - there had been plenty of strange things, for sure, which could, in turn, tie together in the end.

Pursing his lips, he swung and knocked the ball down the green, only to have it be batted away by the swinging pendulum. "Darn it, must've counted too fast..." He hurried down the path to finish up his shot and managed a birdie in the end. Glancing over to Lucy, he mustered a smile, waving a gentle hand to encourage her to continue to the next course.

She applauded for him before she moved on to the next hole. This one was designed with a forked path. One of the options led straight to the hole, but it was not as easily accessed as the other two options that took you on a more convoluted path. She frowned slightly as she studied it, forming an answer to Max's question.

"Alexandria and her brother." Her brother especially, but she wouldn't get into that. She hadn't processed that encounter enough to be comfortable enough with it to share. It was still a guarded secret. She wasn't quite sure how she felt about it yet.

"It's like a weird sense of deja vu. Have you not felt it?"

She lined up her shot and of course was misdirected and found herself miles away from the hole.

He shook his head as he took his place after Lucy, trying to not mimic what she had done, especially since he was already behind. Taking a moment to study the course, carefully hitting his ball off of a wall to angle it down the short path toward the hole - unfortunately the shot skirted the goal by just a bare inch, rolling a little ways past.

Max tossed the golf club up to grab it in the middle of the shaft. "You're the first one who's had that effect on me. And I haven't met Alexandria or her brother."

Walking down the path, he watched from the side for Lucy to take her next shot. "If it's deja vu, is that supposed to imply that we've met before? Or maybe it's just that you remind me of someone. It might take me a bit to place it, that's all..." Of course, he wondered where this fell among the checklist of strange events that had been occurring around the apartment.

Lucy lined up her shot and watched the ball roll within sight of the hole finally. Rather than being excited, she found herself quietly contemplating Max's question. She frowned slightly. Had they met before? She'd heard of people discussing reincarnation from time to time, was that what Max had meant? The idea...didn't seem so far fetched. It should have.

"I don't know. I don't really understand what all of this is. But it's weird. And I'm glad it's not just me."

She tilted her head, giving him a thoughtful look. "Do you think it's something we're suppose to figure out? Like, that it's trying to tell us something?"

He finished his turn on the course, batting the ball in with a gentle tap. After retrieving it, he gave Lucy a look with a furrowed brow.

"Who's trying to tell us something?" The question came out a little too excitedly - it was like Lucy had stumbled onto a quandary he'd not yet thought of. Especially when it was tied into the other strange goings-on around the apartment; a subtle recognition, the weird room with belongings of ex-tenants, people disappearing. But how did it all fit together?

"This is like a puzzle where we're missing too many pieces," he grumbled.

Lucy took her shot and sank the ball. She retrieved it and headed towards the next hole, now far more focused on their conversation than the game they were playing. It was far more intriguing than tapping a ball into a hole.

She chewed on her lip, thinking hard. Who would be telling them something? And why would they feel the need to tell them something? What was it they had to know, and how did Max and James and Alex play into it? Her dad always told her everything happened for a reason. There had to be a reason for all of this.

"Do you think the landlord is in on this? Do you think the landlord knows what's going on?" That was the only person that had any sort of information about all of them. But that didn't explain why. She felt like she should know why, like the answer was inside of her, just written in another language that she could not understand. It was frustrating.

She lined up her shot and took it carelessly. It didn't even get close to the hole. She didn't care.

His turn followed much in the same manner as Lucy's - the game was still fun and he still paid an amount of attention to it, but the conversation and its relation to everything that had been going on in the apartment building was taking precedence over the sport.

"Have you ever even met the landlord?" Max had had no hand in the selection or application for his shared apartment with his sister. As far as he knew, everything had been done through email or over the phone, and he'd never thought to ask Lily just how she'd even found the apartment building. He'd just been content to have a place to live and play his video games.

Part of him wondered if he should give Lucy all of the information he had. About the weird room, about how Fiona had said people she had previously met had just disappeared from the building without so much as a goodbye, nice knowing you. But he didn't want to scare her, especially since there was no way of knowing how she might react. But wasn't it better if they were all working together? More people helping to work through the mystery of Pax.

"Hey, if I tell you something...you wouldn't freak out, would you?" Wow, great way to gauge someone's reaction, Max, he quickly lamented once the words were already out of his mouth.

Again Lucy took a careless shot, not even bothering to direct her gaze away from Max this time. She hadn't met the landlord. The whole transaction had gone smoothly, so smoothly her parents had been surprised. Lucy had been convinced their money had done the talking for them, but now she wasn't so sure. She'd never seen the landlord. After her elevator adventure, she'd been sure someone would come and talk to her about what happened and that it had been fixed, but no. Sometime quietly in the night the elevator had been repaired.

"I haven't. Have you?"

She stilled when he asked her if she'd freak out. It was hard to say without knowing what he was going to tell her, but it did make the hair on the back of her neck stand up. This obviously had something to do with the apartment building, so she definitely wanted to know.

"I...well I don't know. I'll try not to?"

Her reaction to his question was to be as expected - after all, why did he need to make it so dramatic? But how else was he supposed to preface the comment "hey have you seen that weird room in the lobby that's full of crap like a trash bin? It looks like stuff that was left behind by other tenants..." And not just that it was all lying there, but put there by someone, meticulously labeled and organized. That spoke of forethought and planning, which made its presence all the creepier.

"Well..." Max licked his lips, dropping the ball to the mat and stepping on it with his foot to keep it from rolling before swatting at it with his club. He really wasn't paying attention anymore, and it carelessly went bouncing from wall to wall to go right past the cup and bat off another wall into a dip in the surface that would be extremely difficult to get out of.

"I haven't met the landlord. And another girl and I - Fiona Shepard, have you met her? - we found this room. In the lobby. Full of stuff." He figured it would be better to go in pieces instead of all at once. Let her absorb the information.

Lucy forced herself to move toward her ball and tapped it gently, not caring where it went. Frankly, had lost its appeal with the introduction of a mystery. This called for Scooby Snacks. Pity she didn't have any. Did they even make those for people? She'd seen them as dog treats before, but she'd never thought to check to see if they made them for people. She'd have to check that out so she'd be ready the next time they decided to go golfing.

"I haven't met her. Do you think she has met the landlord? And there's a room in the lobby? I've never seen it. What kind of stuff is in there?"

"All kinds of stuff. Like, uh...stuff that past tenants might've left behind." With one hand, he used the club to bat at the ball, keeping them both lingering at the green they were currently on. Thankfully the course was rather sparse, so there wasn't anyone behind them to complain.

"I don't think Fiona has met the landlord, but I never asked her. Both she and her sister live in the building - I guess I could ask them both, maybe we could do some kind of survey. I mean, don't you think that's weird? No one having met the landlord..." Max didn't quite notice the circles he was drawing in his own mind, too absorbed in turning over the puzzle from every possible angle.

"Anyway, the room. It had all this weird stuff. Like a spatula, this huge bra, just all this junk. But it wasn't a trash room - everything was on shelves, and labeled with numbers." He paused, not intending to be dramatic, but certainly falling out that way. "The numbers matched the apartment numbers in the building. Like the stuff used to belong to prior tenants."

She frowned. What sort of weird person would go around collecting things like spatulas and bras? And why would they keep them like a collection? It was an uncomfortable idea. Had this person gone through her things? If that were true, that would mean they would know about her wigs. What if they took one for the room? And what sort of person kept a secret collection in a room right off the lobby? That seemed like a really bad hiding place to her.

"There has to be a landlord. I mean, we totally pay rent. It has to go somewhere. Someone has to take it, right?" If it just disappeared into thin air she was going to be so mad. It wasn't really her money, and she hadn't worked for it like most people have to, but her family had. It was the principal of the thing that was important.

"That room sounds really creepy." She took another swing. This one barely connected with the ball and so she made little progress. It didn't matter, it wasn't like they were keeping score anymore.

"Believe me, it is." Well, she hadn't gone screaming in the other direction, which Max wasn't sure to count as a point in his or her favor. But he continued.

"Anyway, me and Fee, we were both in the lobby. The door was open, the door to the room, I mean. Normally you can't see it, it looks like part of the wall. So we went inside, and then someone showed up, and closed the door." He tapped his ball into the hole, then bent to retrieve it, the motion familiar. Suddenly the mini-golf course seemed to have a dark cloud hovering over it, casting a shadow on the once fun game. The idea of hitting balls into holes no longer held any semblance of fun, not with the subject matter they were slowly working through.

"And yeah, I agree. There has to be a landlord." Gripping the ball in his hand, Max fell quiet for a moment. Then he glanced back to Lucy. "Do you think you could ask Alex and James if they've met the landlord? I can ask Fee and her sister, my sister too. Just, you know, see if anyone knows anything."

"They closed you in the room?!" The idea of being trapped in some crazy persons collection room was horrifying. He made it out alive though, which is the important part.

Lucy didn't even bother to go after her ball again. It didn't matter anymore. In fact, she kind of didn't want to be so out in the open while they were discussing this. Maybe the creepy room person was around here and they were listening. She did not want to be the next person on their list.

"I could ask them. I kind of have a feeling they probably haven't. Though I wonder who comes around to fix things when they break, like the elevator." She hadn't gotten back in the elevator since she'd gotten stuck. The stairs took a lot out of her, but she'd rather be winded than trapped.

"Almost," he corrected, moreso himself than Lucy. "Fiona made a distraction and we both ran. We got to the parking lot and just left the building... I don't know if it was the concierge who almost locked us in there, or someone else, but no one's said anything about it. Like everyone is just pretending it didn't happen." No one had said anything about it, a fact for which Max was grateful. But at the same time, every time he passed through the lobby he couldn't help glancing at where the door had been and wondering who had been behind it all.

"Well, it'd be worth a shot. I mean, just to find out more. I might try getting back into that room, just so I know I wasn't crazy and making stuff up." He noted Lucy's stance, suddenly aware that all of this talk, while not necessarily scaring her, might be making her uncomfortable. Without asking, he grabbed her ball from the astroturf green.

"Do you wanna go grab something to eat? I don't really feel like playing anymore." He hoped he wasn't being presumptuous.

"I'm glad you got out." Who knows what could have happened if they hadn't. "And maybe it's better no one talks about it." Talking could lead to finding out things that you were better off not knowing, kind of like this conversation. She'd been so thrilled about starting over in a place that was so comfortable and inviting. Now she had her doubts.

"Do you really think you should go back in there? I mean...what if you don't get out this time?" That would change the game entirely, wouldn't it? She didn't want to think about that.

"Food sounds good. Much better than finishing the game. Do you want me to call the driver?"

"There's a barbecue place here, unless you want to get something else?" Max turned his feet in the direction of where they'd gotten their equipment - no use in hanging on to it if they weren't going to play any more.

For a moment an unsettling feeling made his stomach twist, and he opened his mouth to apologize to Lucy for spoiling their nice afternoon. Then he closed it, his teeth moving together without sound. It was probably better that she found out now, rather than later - it would be so much worse if she wasn't prepared, and that made him wonder at his choice to keep Lily in the dark regarding all of this stuff.

"I think it'll be all right," he replied to her worry that he'd get caught. A smile moved over his face, completely sure of himself. Of course, he was anything but, though he'd still do his damnedest to find out more. The mystery niggling at the back of his mind was just too tempting to let slide by.

"That sounds fine to me." She would have agreed to anything at this point. She just wanted to get off of this golf course, sit down somewhere and process all of this. Max had given her a lot to think about. Maybe she'd talk to her parents, see if they knew who the landlord was since they handled her rent. Maybe they could help her figure out what was going on. Telling them would make it more concrete and real and she wasn't sure she wanted that.

Maybe they were just making something out of nothing. That was always a possibility. It was a very slim possibility, but a possibility. If only she could get herself to fully believe that, she'd be set.

"I still don't think you should go," she said quietly as they headed back to the building where they got their equipment. "You almost got caught last time. What will happen if you get caught again?"

Walking up to the window, Max handed in his ball and club, giving the employee a brief smile before he waited for Lucy to do the same. Then the two of them headed in the direction of the barbeque, the smell wafting toward them over a slight breeze that had struck up. It made his mouth water and stomach grumble a little, despite the depressive nature of their conversation.

"I can just wait until the concierge is gone for the day," he explained. "I keep pretty weird hours as it is - I think if I try to get in there in the early morning, no one will be any the wiser." Of course, he wasn't thinking of the potential aspect of alarms and security systems, but he'd get around to that later.

Lucy followed Max, her arms folded across her chest. The smell of food was having the opposite effect on her. It was making her stomach roll and her mind rebelled at the idea of putting any of it into her system. She was too worried to eat. She wasn't as convinced as he was that he'd be okay if he returned to that room. Something about the whole situation gave her a very bad feeling.

"What if they don't sleep though? Or what if they have a weird sleeping habit and are awake at odd hours too? You can't go. Especially not by yourself." In her mind, she'd need an army to make this entire trip acceptable. He was taking too big a risk that she wasn't sure was worth it.

"Why, are you offering to come along?" The question was more of a light tease than an actual invitation. Max had no intention of taking anyone along with him this time (though if he thought long and hard about it, it was all Fee's doing that had gotten them out of the situation to begin with - and yet it had been her that had gotten them into it as well) and figured that one person would have an easier time of slipping in and out. That was, if the door could even be found.

He stopped by the edge of the dining area, turning to look back at his golfing companion. She looked intensely worried, the emotion painted on her face clearly, and Max felt a pang of guilt because he knew that he had probably put it there. Why she should be so concerned with his well being was beyond him, but at the same time spoke lengths of her character. He lifted a hand as though he were going to touch her shoulder, but then let it fall before the action was completed.

"Look, I...if I do go, I mean, I'll take somebody with. Somebody big and beefy, like Sam, maybe. That way if anyone tries to sneak up on me, I'd have a muscle man, yah know?" Max grinned at the thought, though he doubted that Sam would be so agreeable toward the idea of playing bodyguard to a kid with aspirations of being a detective slash spy. But he hoped the thought would at least crack a smile on Lucy's face, if not reassure her.

Oh no. Oh she hadn't meant that at all. She wasn't the brave sort. Adventures were fun and all, but only when they didn't involve mysterious people trying to lock other people into hidden rooms with creepy collections of things.

"Someone needs to go with you," she reaffirmed. "And if it has to be me, then I will." She really, really hoped it wouldn't have to be her. She hoped it would be an army. A big army, all well armed and protected and carrying well charged cell phones that had good signals.

When he assured her he would take someone with him, she pursed and twisted her lips into a slightly crooked, concerned expression.

"You should take more than one person. You don't know how many people are in on this. And you need someone who can help you in case they hurt one of you. Or you both get trapped."

Sorry Max, there were no smiles to be had today.

"Well if we get trapped, it'll be like how many people can you fit into a telephone booth," he joked, still giving it a go to try and do his best at softening the topic at hand. He had no idea that it would take such a turn, the innocent asking if there was anything odd going on in the building according to Lucy's knowledge. The guilt of ruining what could have been a perfectly normal game of mini-golf settled on him, and he slid his hands into his pockets.

"Do you wanna just call the car and we can drive through some place on the way home?" Maybe being in the familiar vehicle that her family owned would help to calm her. Max just knew that some food in his stomach would do wonders.

"Unless they knock you out and take you somewhere else." Or kill them. She wasn't going to say that, though. It was probably for the best if only she went down that line of thinking. The day had already taken a turn for the less than awesome, she didn't need to take it any further down that path.

She pulled her cellphone out and called the driver. She wanted to go home, smoke a joint, eat a lot of junk food, watch cartoons and forget that the building she lived in had a spooky room and creepy people. She'd push the conversation to the back of her mind and convince herself it was nothing but a bad dream. It was the only option that didn't make her want to freak out.

"He'll be here in about five minutes. We can decide where we want to eat once we get into the car." They could stop talking about this and talk about food. Food was a much safer conversation.

Well wasn't she just a glass half full type of person.

"I don't think anyone's going to get kidnapped...probably just yelled at and then maybe kicked out of the complex." Had that been what had happened to all of the previous tenants? And then all of the left over items were trophies, ill-gained and gloated over for the memory of what had happened to those poor people who had simply been looking for somewhere to store their precious electronics, like Max? He gave a light shiver, but did his best to school himself before Lucy noted anything else that might put her off more than she already was.

"Hamburgers sound good right about now," he chirped, looking to switch the conversation as the car pulled up to the curb in front of them. The driver got out before Max could be chivalrous and get the door, but he still waited for Lucy to slide in first. Lily would demand that he have some manners after all.

"How about In 'n Out?"

(ooc: do you wanna wrap it up?)

If this was Bones or CSI or NCIS, he would get kidnapped and killed. That's how it worked. No one ever got yelled at and kicked out. They'd end up shot, or stuffed in a wall or something. If the building already had a creepy collector, she had a feeling that person would have no problem stuffing someone in a wall. She kind of hoped he was right. She hated to think of him stuffed in a wall. It was time to close this conversation.

"Hamburgers sound fine."

She slid into the car and fastened her seat belt. Once Max was in the car, the driver closed the door and went around the car to settle into the drivers seat. Once he was given their chosen destination, the car pulled away from the curb and carried them away from their short, rather revealing round of mini golf. She had no idea who won. She didn't care.
