Who: Lily & Adam.
What: Lily to the rescue.
Where: Random dudebro beach, boardwalk shopping type area.
When: 7:49 PM.
Warnings: Annoying, bigoted dudebro NPC/s. Language.
Notes: LOTTERY POST, Y'ALL

Between work and his own natural inclinations, it was a rare day that found Adam Vejas near the shore. The bright sun and crowded shores were far removed from the solitude he typically sought when not caught up in work. He favored quiet places, calmness, serenity, his preferred company his mp3 player - and when possible, Alex. Tonight, for whatever reason, had been different. The sound of the ocean seemed to call to him somehow, the tide breaking on the sand a hauntingly familiar siren's song. He could not have begun to guess why, acknowledging at once the strangeness of the sensation, but giving in to it all the same. When darkness at last began to steal across the ocean, thinning somewhat the herd of tourists and local beach bums alike, Adam left Pax Letale and made his way to parts unknown.

For a time he simply wandered, parking in the first spot available to him, a block away from a beach he was quite unfamiliar with. Caught up in his thoughts, circular and pointless though they were, he failed at first to notice the area's rather jockish clientele. His roving gaze saw only the abundance of health food shops, locally owned storefronts and organic groceries jammed tight alongside snake oil salesmen with chain-store names. It was an interesting amalgamation, and one that piqued his curiosity. Earbuds firmly shoved into his ears, he followed his feet into the first such store, peering at the shelves with heavy-lidded, black-limned eyes.

In short order, the first objector to his arrival appeared. A meaty hand curved hard around his shoulder, pulling him around to face his would-be bully.

"Nothing in here that'll help you," he said, unnaturally tanned lips sneering out the words. Adam heard nothing, all sound drowned out by Otep screaming in his ears. He quirked a black brow, casting an impassive glance up at the bleach blonde clerk. After what appeared to be a moment of contemplation - but was, in truth, merely a brief contemplation of a lyric he had forgotten, now heard and appreciated anew - Adam put his back to the man, slinking lithely past him to reach for a ludicrously sized bottle of vitamins.

This, of course, did not provoke the most desirable response. "Are you retarded?" the man went on. He pointed a thick finger to a sign by the door. "We have the right to refuse service. So get the fuck out."

Lily didn't particularly enjoy this shop. The men who ran it were pompous and had their heads up their butts but it was the only place that Lily could get decent amounts of herbal remedies in a nice pill form. Today's trip was to restock on some natural remedies that would power up Max's energy. Well, she hoped it would anyway. But the store associate that was raising his voice broke Lily out of her little world.

Turning to look for the cause of disturbance Lily's blue-green eyes settled on a familiar form. Adam, one of the residents of her apartment complex whom she had met a few times, was being cornered by one of the men from the store. Placing the pill bottle back on the shelf Lily took a few steps forward. Whatever the cause of this was, she didn't care to see how this man was treating Adam. She didn't know the man very well but she found him to be sweet and this type of treatment of him raised an fierce protectiveness that Lily had only ever felt for Max.

She slipped closer, cutting between them and placing a thin hand on Adam's shoulder. "Well, isn't it nice to see you here," she said cheerfully before turning an angry glare to man. "He's just in the store and doing nothing wrong, you can't refuse service for that."

Adam had, moments before, set upon a particular course of action. It largely involved ignoring the brute for as long as was possible, letting his music set the score for his inevitable, bodily removal from the shop. To Adam's mind the man had at least a foot and no small number of pounds on him, and this conversation was quickly shaping up to be more trouble than it was worth. Adam felt quite certain there was nothing in the shop worth taking a beating for, and for years the concepts of calculated risks and strategic retreats had been his preferred M.O. But it seemed his slender neighbor had other plans.

"That's alright," he said, reaching up to tug one small earbud from his ear. It fell lax around his neck, thumping lightly against his black tee shirt. He tried to place her name, but it slipped his mind; all the same she felt familiar, known to him in a way she could not place. He looked to her, rather than to the makeshift bouncer, rolling his shoulder to remove it from beneath the other man's grip. "I was just leaving."

"Fuckin' right you were," the clerk said. He looked from Adam to Lily, as if sizing up the potential trouble they might cause him were he to cast them both out together. Dimly he recognized the girl, but the pale, skinny boy was an unknown quantity. Uncertainty, however, did not seem to lessen his vehemence. "We can refuse anybody for any reason. He's scaring off the clientele, Hot Topic lookin' motherfucker."

"What clientele?" Lily snapped, turning fully towards the clerk. She felt herself nearly vibrating as she stared into the eyes of the clerk. "The only clientele here is myself and this gentleman. Your typical meat heads already came and went before he even walked through the door. Keep treating customers like this and you will start to lose them."

She looked the man over with complete disgust then turned back to Adam and reached up to gently touch his shoulder. "If you want anything that this store sells I know of much nicer establishment up the road." She glanced over her shoulder at the clerk then turned back to Adam. Her eyes still held some level of annoyance due to the clerk but she quickly took on an expression of sweetness. "I can take you there if you'd like."

Not surprisingly, the clerk seemed reticent to back down in the face of the newcomer's fury. It was clear even to him she meant business, but just as clear to all that he refused to lose face. Behind her Adam seemed to shrink, black eyes glittering as they watched their apparent opponent, unblinking as they watched, trying to assess what the other man might do. In that moment Adam seemed more animal than man, a creature long accustomed to defusing danger rather than rising to meet it. But his apparent timidity was only one small facet of his response, all smoke and mirrors meant to cover his true intent: Underneath it all he was closely studying their potential enemy, searching for signs that his blustering aggression might turn into something real. Were he to raise a hand to Lily - or to Adam himself, it seemed - things would get ugly, and quick.

"Yeah," he said, giving a single, boyishly vigorous nod of his head. He shifted on his feet, his hand wrapping high and loose around Lily's arm, the chain belt around his waist making a metallic clacking as he moved toward the door. "Sounds good. Let's get out of here."

"What a great idea," the clerk deadpanned, appearing to have conveniently forgotten whose idea their leaving had been, but clearly happy to take credit for it. "Fuck off, fag, you and your pretty bodyguard."

The touch of the other man on her arm made Lily relax slightly. It was a good reminder that Adam was still there and it wasn't solely Lily and the clerk in the room. She looked at Adam and her eyes softened in a comforting gaze to him. He seemed cautious of all that was going on but Lily felt in her gut that there was much more to Adam than he was letting on and it pleased her. "We can walk. It's a lovely place that doesn't employ assholes."

Her hand brushed over Adam's back as they moved forward but the clerks parting words caused Lily to pause again. Her jaw set and she looked dangerous. Turning she glared at the clerk with a look that could have set anyone on fire. Call her a bodyguard, sure, she had been one for her brother all of her life. But the derogatory term was what caught her attention and she considered with quick angry thoughts if she should hit the man or not. "What?"

Adam would have been perfectly content to continue their timely egress, but it seemed things were not meant to be so easy. The clerk did not balk in the least at her swift and violent response. Instead he merely swelled up a bit, hovering as menacingly as he could manage in the couple's general direction. Adam keenly felt the lack of any witnesses, though he hoped there was at least a closed circuit camera capturing the confrontation; as he brushed pale fingers close against the thick metal of his belt, ready to wrap its length around his knuckles at a moment's notice, he wondered if things might truly get out of hand, as they seemed to be doing with alarming speed.

"You heard me," he snapped, a single step carrying him further into Lily's space.

Adam had heard too many such insults in his time to be overtly ruffled by them: What had begun in his youth had continued into adulthood, though thankfully the steadily increasing ratio of those who found his look appealing to those threatened or put off by it had helped ease the worst of his self consciousness. But what truly bothered him was Lily's reaction to it, the fact that she was clearly offended and angered on his behalf; he did not know how to respond to this, nor how to repay it in kind. So he merely stood by her side, straightening up to at least show his solidarity with her - all the while, of course, hoping this would still end peacefully, that they all might go their separate ways with no harm done. But their new nemesis, it seemed, could not leave well enough alone.

"Take your pet 'mo and get the fuck out."

Lily set her jaw, her eyes narrowing as she glared at the store clerk. It seemed in that moment that her entire being illuminated itself. From the roots to tips of her hair, her skin, her clothes, her eyes all took on a blinding light. But it was brief, had someone blinked as it happened they wouldn't have seen it, but the clerk did and he stood dumbfounded before Lily.

Lily, however, hadn't exactly caught on to what had happened. A flash of lightning outside? She gave a shake of her head and blinked. It seemed to be clear out, no chance of storms. Still, the man seemed to have lost the fight in him.

Turning away from the man Lily looked at Adam with concern and comfort. "Let's go, Adam. Your name is Adam, right? I'm sorry about the idiot here. He shouldn't have said those things." Her voice rose so that she was once more talking to both Adam and the man.

"Adam, yeah," he said, his voice soft and utterly distracted. The light had come and gone so quickly Adam could not be entirely sure he had seen it at all. But the evidence was there, plainly laid out before them - or staggering, more to the point, the victim of that blinding flash now stumbling through his own beloved store, knocking about like a bull in a china shop. It was, perhaps, the best possible end to a quickly escalating situation. "It's no big deal. It's only words, and I've heard worse."

Earbuds still dangling at his chest, Adam reached out to take Lily's arm, happy to guide her out of the store at last. "I didn't catch your name." As the door slammed behind them, he turned to look at her, a smile tugging upward the corner of his lips. "Thanks, by the way. You didn't have to do all that."

Lily glanced over her shoulder, watching the clerk with sudden unease and worry on her face. "I wonder what's wrong with him," Lily murmured as she accepted Adam taking her arm. Looking back at him the very corners of her lips curved into a frown. "I'm sorry you've heard worse. People can be cruel. And I'm Lily. I've seen you around Pax, caught your name and stuff."

She gave a small smile but glanced back at the man again. Giving a shake of her head she looked at Adam again. "Of course I had to, people shouldn't treat others with so much disrespect. You did nothing wrong."

Adam smiled a bit at her words, grateful she was not an entirely unknown quantity in this uncomfortable situation. The initial danger having passed, he felt now the thick, heady ebbing of adrenaline, leaving in its wake a kind of dreamy contemplation.

"Lily," he repeated, committing the name to memory. There might come a time when he would be able to repay her for the favor she had done him, and he resolved to take that chance the first moment it came; he had few enough friends in the building, and it was always good to add another to the fold. It did not pass his notice that he felt oddly at ease in her presence, not just because she had so quickly flown to his rescue. There was something in her bearing that beckoned to him, a familiar quality he had experienced in the past but had never been able to place.

"I think I remember you from the power outage," he said. "Sorry I haven't managed a better introduction since then. Working nights tends to limit opportunities for things like that."

"Oh gosh, the power outage," Lily said with a laugh. "It's fine, don't worry. I was so completely out of it during the outage. I was half asleep the entire time and barely noticed anything. Even if you had introduced yourself I probably wouldn't have remembered."

She smiled at Adam, feeling a little more relaxed now that she was away from the toxic environment of the store, although her mind was still on the strange reaction of the man in the store. It worried her a little and she couldn't help but want to go back and see if he was all right. It was simply in her nature to do while her near explosion in the store was not like her. Not so much unless Max was being teased.

"So you're another night owl? My brother is one, I can barely keep my eyes open once it grows dark." She glanced at the store before looking back to Adam. "So, would you like me to show you that other store? I don't want to keep you waiting with anything."

He nodded in answer to her question, following close at her side. His hand had slipped away from her arm as they walked, the distance between them growing to something more comfortable and less motivated by that initial flight response. With the imminent danger now past, had Adam known the thrust of her thoughts, he may well have agreed to go back with her; as it was, they walked on, each of them lost to their own quiet musings.

His eyes flicked to hers at the mention of the shop. After a brief moment of consideration, he raised one shoulder in an airy sort of shrug. "Up to you," he said. "I was just killing time. I didn't really intend to buy anything, but I like looking." He gave a quiet, self deprecating chuckle. "What brings you out here?"

"Oh, well then we don't have to go to the other shop!" She smiled and absentmindedly played with her mother's necklace. "I was just looking for some herbal remedies in a pill form. They usually have a decent stock but I'd rather order online then go back there... after that incident."

She frowned slightly, observing Adam closely just to make sure that he was indeed okay after all of that and not just lying to her. "I also like watching the sun set if I have a chance and seeing the shoreline come to life in the darkness. Kind of a nerd in that regard." She gave a small shrug but the smile didn't leave her face. It was odd how comfortable she felt with this man. She had only seen him in passing maybe once or twice but she felt like he was an old acquaintance of sorts.

Adam felt a subtle kind of sting at her words, feeling chastised, somehow, though he knew that was far from her likely intent. It was difficult, though, for him to put aside the knowledge that it was his own doing that had interrupted her errand-running, and perhaps rendered an entire store off bounds for her future perusal. He did not in the slightest get the impression she regretted what had happened, but that did not stop this line of thought. Luckily she moved the conversation neatly along, bringing up a new topic with which he could readily identify.

"Then we're both nerds," he said, chuckling softly. "This is one of the best times of day to come to the beach, for that very reason." He glanced down to his own arms, where vibrant tattoos covered pale flesh. "Besides, too much sun means way more work to keep these up, and I like them how they are."

Lily's eyes turned down to look over her companions arms. They widened slightly as she took in the tattoos that covered his skin. She had always had a strange fascination of tattoos but had none herself. Still, she knew little about them, but was always eager to learn. "Does the sun do something to the ink?" Her eyes flicked back to Adam's and they were full of questions. "I... I'm sorry I don't know a lot about tattoos. They're beautifully done on you though."

A hand reached forward, her fingers ready to touch one of the designs, but it stopped short. Lily wasn't one to unnecessarily invade someone's personal space and she didn't want to come across as rude. "I usually come here while the sun is still up. I love the sunshine and, well, I don't have any tattoos to worry about." She smiled again, the situation in the store beginning to be forgotten.

Adam smiled, looking down to her hand as she pulled it away. "That does make it easier," he said, laughing quietly. "A little sunscreen and I'm fine, so I come out here when I can. Too much sun fades the ink, is all. Reds and yellows go the fastest, and I have a good bit of those." He held his arm out to her, tipping his head to indicate its colorful length. "You can touch it if you want," he said, his smile twitching wider. He could well understand her curiosity; he had always felt similarly, even long before his own first designs. "The skin does feel different than where it isn't inked." He watched her from beneath his dark lashes, regarding her with new curiosity of his own. "Have you ever thought about getting one?"

"Are you sure?" Lily asked, suddenly weary. She didn't want to be rude, she was trying to avoid that, but the tattoos did fascinate her. To her knowledge Max never gotten a tattoo, her Aunt didn't have one nor did she. She had never really noticed or touched the tattoos of anyone she had slept with either. But looking at Adam she felt that sense of ease once more and smiled. Lightly, with dancing fingers, she brushed over the skin of Adam's arm.

"Oh, I see, it's almost like the skin is raised in some places. Like you could feel the design," She said softly. "But in other places it's smooth, like regular skin." She made a pout, a tendency she had when she was being thoughtful, and gently pulled her hand away from Adam's arm. Hearing his question her attention went back to his face.

"As a teenager I wanted to get tattoos. Butterflies and the sun and all of that. Nature things. I haven't really thought about it since. I guess once I became old enough that I could have actually gone and gotten a tattoo it lost some of it's spark. Although..." Lily looked back at Adam's tattoos briefly. "I don't know, maybe one day I would. Does it hurt horribly?"

"Depends on where you get them," he said, chuckling quietly. "I mean, anywhere you get a tattoo, it's going to be a bunch of needles drilling into your skin. It's never going to feel great, and don't let anybody tell you otherwise." He laughed again, thinking back to all the posturing he had heard in his past. A little pain with one's pleasure was all well and good, as even Adam knew, but a tattoo was another thing entirely. He thought back to the work done on his chest, inching over ever more of his flesh, at last coursing a path over the hard lines of his sternum. "Skin over bone hurts worse," he said. "I'm sure you knew that. So if you do get one, pick a softer spot than I often have."

He cast her a sidelong glance, black lashes hiding blacker eyes. His smile crept slow across his lips. "If you decide to get one, I'd love to go with you."

Lily frowned at the description of the needles. That was what stopped her from getting a tattoo, the idea of allowing a needle to drill into her skin. "I'll definitely not get anything over a bone then. It sounds too painful."

She frowned again but her eyes flicked back to Adam's and her lips softened into a smile. "I would appreciate that. Show me the ropes of how to get a tattoo and where to go and all of that." Silently she tacked on that she hoped he wouldn't be freaked if she cried. She really didn't like needles but she couldn't lie, the idea of tattoos had sparked her curiosity. "So, would you like to wander the pier a little and maybe get something to eat? Don't tell my brother but I really love the sweet potato fries they sell a couple of shops down."

Adam smiled at her caveat, politely leaving out the fact that he was not entirely sure who her brother was. "Not a word," he said, nodding pleasantly. Regardless, sweet potato fries did sound remarkably good, particularly after the rough day of attempted shopping they had shared. He nodded enthusiastically, following her as she led them on.
