I do wish we had horses here. This island is bigger than it looks and having to walk all around it is tiresome. If I could ride, it would be so much more efficient.

Anyhow, several days ago, I went around to gather some supplies that I thought might liven up the bland tea that we have. I've dried it all in the sun and sewed it into little tea bags. The results were not bad, if I do say so myself. I've made mint, ginger, lemon and lavender, so if you'd like to try some, let me know and I will give you a few bags.

Perhaps... They are usually made of leather. You are rather creative with such things.

I'm grew up in a poor fishing family so we learned to be very creative with rope. Plus I've been here since the beginning, back when things were much more primitive and we had to get used to improvising.

I don't think I ever introduced myself. I'm Finnick.

You did - Mr. Odair - back when I first arrived.

I did not live incredibly close to the ocean, but my country is a small island nation, so one was never incredibly far from the sea. We would frequently import fish from the small fishing villages on the coast.

I did? I'm sorry, it must be the sleep deprivation making me stupid.

Panem was...big, I think? They deliberately kept us ignorant of the geography, so I'm not sure. Most of the fish we caught went to the Capitol, which seemed a long ways away.

Yes, you fathered a child recently, didn't you? Congratulations.

Your world seems quite different from the one I am used to.

Yes, my son was born during the snow last week.

My world is quite different and not pleasant at all. I'm very glad that my son will grow up here.

How are you adjusting to being here?

How dreadful for his mother, though it seems that she came through alright.

I believe I am doing the best that I can. This type of living is difficult for me.

Oh, it wasn't so bad. We got a couple of fireplaces built in the medical center so it was comfortable enough. Not that giving birth is ever easy, but I don't think the snow made it any harder.

Is there anything I can do to make you more comfortable?

My son was born in September and I remember being cold. I cannot imagine what it would be like in winter, even with fires.

That's very kind of you to ask, but I believe I am well enough for now. My shelter is finished and I'm going to cultivate a few tea plants in my "backyard", as it were.

Chloe was hot all the time in late pregnancy. She actually enjoyed the snow. I was afraid she'd try to lie down in it and make snow angels.

That's nice. Was tea important to you in your world?

Oh, compared to where I am from, this place is often unbearably hot, but the snow was such a stark change.

Tea is a highly social drink in England. We often drink it in the morning and then at a special time in the afternoon and then again in the evening.

Where I'm from its usually warm, like this. I had only seen snow in the Capitol, never in District Four.

Oh, a social ritual! I think it's important to preserve and share some of those little cultural things from our homes.

Was your country divided into districts?

Perhaps someday I'll have a tea party, though we are missing quite a few crucial elements.

Yes. there was a Capitol and twelve districts. Each district specialized in a different industry and supplied resources for the people in the capitol.

I'd like to see that someday. What are the crucial elements? Maybe we can find a way to improvise them.

What did they supply to you?

Different types of pastries, honestly. Perhaps someone here is a creative baker, as I'm not sure if we have all of the ingredients here.

Uh...nothing we wanted, that's for sure.

I know we have flour and butter and eggs, but as far as I know we don't have sugar.

That does not seem like an efficient system. No wonder you say it was horrible.

I'll be honest and say that I do not know much about baking. I never did it at home.

Yeah, I don't think efficiency was the point. It was more about keeping us (the districts) in our place.

I'm no expert either. I can grill a fish and cook a few other basic things, but I never did much baking.

Mm, sounds like what my country has been trying to do to the rest of the world, really. It ended up bringing us into a war.

We had cooks. I'm sure that makes me sound terribly privliged.

We had a war, about seventy years ago. The districts rebelled, but we lost and we've been paying for it ever since.

Yeah, it kind of does. But you're here now roughing it with the rest of us, so I won't hold it against you.

Our war was mostly with other nations who are trying to take colonies in the lands that we are also trying to occupy. The entire thing is a bloody business.

Don't particularly have a choice about that, do I?

Like if our Capitol were competing with other Capitols and the districts were caught in the middle?

Well, there's always a choice. Some people have gone home, although I hope you won't choose that option.

Sounds like it, yes.

Despite the living conditions, no, I do not want to leave. There are some benefits to this place that outweigh the negative.

I agree, there are a lot of positives here. Once I settled in, I've never been happier in my life.
