Crazypants knows the deal
Characters: Zarkin Frood [NPC] and Samara Chambers, later Theodore Nott
Setting: Diagon Alley, main thoroughfare. Saturday November 8th, around 10:30 AM
Summary: Frood's off his rocker again but there may be something legit to what he's spewing.
Rating: Possibly high for disturbing imagery

Everyone knew that Zarkin Frood was pretty much completely nutters. He spoke with a thick heavy accent, something difficult enough for most Brits to understand, and that was before he started raving. He was in fine form this morning, muttering to himself as he paced the length and breadth of Diagon Alley's main thoroughfare. twice he stopped and accosted some poor unsuspected witch or wizard, warning them about 'that red-haired' bitch, before stalking off again.

Most people ignored him, but more than a few cast wary glances his way. Some people went out of their way to get out of his, but some few others were worried they actually heard a bit of sense in what he was yelling.

Samara spent a little too much time out and about these days, mostly because she was afraid of being alone in the house with Jason. She made excuses to always be around him when Eli was home as well, so it was rare that the poor boy was ever by himself with either of his parents now because she just did not trust herself or her husband anymore. Now she was sorely wishing she had not turned down her mother's offer for a house elf, because that would mean another eye in the house while Eli was at work. Even though she knew it wasn't Jason in the dreams upon waking, it didn't seem to help her sanity any. Nor did the fact that her husband had been lying to her about having the nightmares himself, but that was something she did not want to worry herself with at the present time.

She had gone to her brother Benji's to pick up Jason that morning and now they were wandering the streets of Diagon Alley, doing some casual shopping as well as looking for some take-away for lunch that afternoon. Samara was still on the fence about trying the Muggle restaurants that Aggie had suggested, but you could really only eat at the same places so many times before they became tired.

"Mum, can we go visit Da at work?" Jason asked her, squeezing her hand as he gazed at the shop windows that they passed.

Samara sighed. They had lunch with Eli from time to time while he was at work, but today was definitely not going to be one of those days. Jason had no idea that they had argued the night before, but she wasn't going to tell him that. With the nightmares returning last night, it felt like salt poured into an already aching wound. "No, love, your father has to work through lunch today. He'll see you this evening though.

"Here, how about we browse the potions ingredients? Didn't you say you had a polyjuice potion to brew?" She smiled warmly at him, seeing his face light up. She did not even notice the man standing on the street as she steered her son toward the entrance of Pottidge's Cauldron Shop.

Frood, his face contorted in a mix of fear and remembrance, barreled past a few other people, seemingly away from a ginger-haired woman who seemed nothing but confused as she looked after him. He had no direction, simply away and he was holding his lower stomach as he went. He stopped short, leaning against a building that turned out to be a cauldron shop, panting slightly as memories of torture flooded his mind. He could almost feel it again, the horror, the vile, disgusting realisation of what was happening. It hadn't hurt physically, not one bit. The emotional trauma was the worst.

He started when he heard a voice and before he could see who spoke, screamed at the top of his lunge, "Keep back you vile witch!" Though his accent was so thick it make the words difficult, the tone was unmistakable. His next words were lost in a jumbled sound of gasping and near-retching as he fought to keep the meager contest of his stomach down.

Samara and Jase had almost reached the doors of Pottidge's when a man off the side of the entrance screamed, startling Samara. She pulled Jason toward her instinctively, though the man wasn't coming toward them. It seemed as if he was getting sick against the wall.

"Mum, should we see if he's alright?" Jason looked up at her.

"I'm not sure if we should bother him, Jase." She was weary of the man after hearing his scream. She didn't know exactly what he'd said, but the tone was obvious enough.

"He may be in trouble. What if no one else helps him?" the boy looked pleadingly at her. She had no idea why he cared so much about some man he knew nothing about, but he was a child after all and he didn't know that some people it was better to just leave alone no matter their situation.

She sighed. "Alright, we'll see if there's anything we can do." They approached slowly toward the man and Samara called out, "Sir?" She held Jason back quite far from the strange man, just in case he was to do anything odd.

Frood heard a voice. A real voice, a woman and she was speaking to him. Maybe? He turned around, wiping his mouth with his sleeve. He looked at her, then at her son and flinched before asking roughly, "Who are you?"

His eyes were still a bit bleary but they focused on her and he pushed himself away from the wall to face her completely. People paused to look at them as they passed, but no one else stopped or even slowed. "Who are you," he repeated in exactly the same inflection as he had before.

"I'm Samara Chambers-" Jason tugged on her arm then seemingly making sure that he was not left out of the introductions as many adults were known to do with their children. She gestured to her son and continued, "And this is Jason Chambers. We just wanted to see if you were alright." Samara hoped she had heard him correctly. His accent was thick, even for these parts.

He certainly didn't look all that well, but then again not many of them did these days. Whether it be a family member having been murdered or being plagued nightly by the 'nightmares' or whatever they truly were, many people were not looking their best. Was it possible that this man was having the nightmares like her and her husband?

"Is there anything we can do for you, sir?" Jase asked then, sounding far older than he should. Samara squeezed his shoulder in reassurance.

Frood stood still for a long moment, not looking at them not answering. He mumbled to himself, then hummed, then mumbled again. Finally, he took a deep and steadying breath and looked at Samara. "No. Not all right. She's back and she's killing and she won't stop until she's put down. No one's listening, no one's..."

He trailed off, unblinking and stared down at the boy. "How old are you?" He asked the question very suddenly, his eyes intense and somewhat worried.

Samara wasn't sure if she was hearing him correctly. She went against her better judgement and moved closer to the man as he spoke to make sure she could catch his words through his thick accent. It sounded like he was talking about a murderer, possibly the murderer, but how could he know who it was?

She was about to ask him this, but he had addressed Jason before she had the chance and Jase always loved it when people gave him attention. "I turned five years old in October, sir."

Samara resisted the urge to roll her eyes at her son's reply, which was obviously more information than was needed, but showing off was a specialty of his. She looked back up at the man, noticing his look toward her son and chewed her lip. "Why do you ask?"

Frood nodded something slightly wistful in his expression. "Same age, same age," he murmured. He looked back at the boy's mother. "My boy. Was his age." He didn't finish the sentence but it was clear there was a note of loss, old loss, in his tone.

His look at Samara turned serious and then hard. "You watch him. Watch him good. You got a husband? Watch him too." That last part wasn't too clear whether he meant that Samara should watch her husband or he should also watch their son. "She's out there," he half-muttered, looking around himself darkly.

Samara tugged Jase out of the street toward the wall of the shop, so that they weren't being run into by passing shoppers but also so that they were closer to the man. It occurred to her then that they had not asked his name yet because they had been asking after his health. "I'm sorry to hear about your son. What was his name? What is your name?"

She was taken aback by his comment to watch her son. It was like he knew, but how could he? And then when he told her to watch her husband, she felt the hair on the back of her neck stand on end and a chill run through her entire body. Who was this man? How could he possibly know any of this? "What do you mean? Who's out there?" Instinctively she put an arm around Jason, pulling him closer to her. Jase looked up at her questioningly but said nothing, turning back to look at the man.

Frood took that supremely long pause again, longer this time. Again it seemed as though he wasn't going to answer. Finally he replied, "Zarkin Frood. Son's name was Zaphod." His face suddenly twisted again, not in grief but in revulsion and he clapped both hands to his head. A reedy thin sound came from him, as though he wanted to scream but couldn't draw in enough air.

He was rocking back and forth by the time he stopped, and his voice was hoarse. "That red-headed bitch. That evil slag. She'll kill you. Make you kill him. She won't stop. Did it before, she'll do it again." That reedy sound came back, steady like he was keening.

Samara stumbled back a bit, dragging Jason with her, when the strange noise came out of the man's mouth. She wasn't sure what it was but she was frightened that he might be sick in more ways than one.

She wasn't sure who the 'red-headed bitch' was that he was referring to. Normally Samara would not listen to these sort of ramblings, but considering what he was saying - that it was all matching up with her dreams and what the Prophet had mentioned about those who had been murdered recently - she couldn't just ignore it. She was clutching Jason's shoulders tightly, so much so that he was complaining, "Mum that hurts!" but she didn't hear him.

Her hands were shaking again like they always did when she got worked up about these 'nightmares' and she looked him square in the face, asking in a shaky, slightly higher voice than her usual, "Who? Who is she? Please, I have to know! You've got to tell me!" By the end she was almost screaming at him, paying no mind to the fact that she was in a busy street of Diagon Alley, right outside a popular cauldron shop.

Theodore had been watching the strange interaction for a period and had even preceded the collection of eyes that lingered upon them. He had always an interest in strange occurences and this was as odd as they did come. He had of course heard what the hysterical man, who now had the name of Zarkin Frood.

He had gone to the cauldron shop to replace his old desktop iron cauldron with something that can handle higher capacity potion brewing. But as he left the store he encountered the raving madman and someone he recognized as an alumni of his house. He paid attention between their exchange but soon noticed that she was starting to become unsteady herself...very anxious. Well of course, the madman was raving about something that would be frightening to any mother. That part made him at least somewhat compelled to act. There was something about mothers protecting their young that struck a chord with him, after all. And secondly, he wondered, what exactly this Frood character was referring to. Was it his dreams? Was it his reality?

He had approached, and walked past Samara with his usual detached confidence and addressed Frood. "Mr. Frood," he said in a startlingly calm tone that wildly contrasted with Samara's near hysterics and Frood's keening.

Frood hadn't even noticed Theodore. This woman was yelling at him and he very nearly clamped his hands over is ears. The only reason he didn't was that he could hear the fear in her voice. Good. She should be afraid. They should all be afraid. Everyone.

Yet when that calm almost quiet voice cut in, Frood broke off suddenly, whipping around to find its source. "Who are you," he asked, and his tone was exactly the same as it had been when he first addressed Samara. He didn't, however, respond to her frantic question.

"Theodore Nott," he replied, his confidence unwaivering in the face of what seemed to be very unsettling behaviour. Theodore noticed bit of sanity return to this interaction. Maybe.

"Mrs. Chambers here had a few questions about this woman that you speak of. Can't you offer any clear answer as to who she is? She is obviously besides herself with worry."

Samara whipped around to look at the man who had just interrupted them, annoyance and desperation on her face. She recognised him from Hogwarts - he was younger than her and a Slytherin, she believed he was Nott. She was about to address him in exasperation but then he seemed to be offering her help, probing Frood for the information that she had already been asking. She wasn't sure why he was doing so but she wasn't going to question it just then.

"Yes, Mr. Frood, please, who is the woman with the red hair that you are referring to?"

"Not who?" Frood seemed to misunderstand what Theo meant but he didn't wait for clarification. He swung back round to the woman and child. They were listening, he realised. They were actually listening. No one listened. His eyes were wide, startled, and he seemed to be flirting with insanity again. "She made me do it," he whispered. "I didn't want to. I loved him. Loved my wife. Watched them both die. It was all her fault. Pandora."

The name came out quiet, as though he were afraid to actually say it. A hysterical sound escaped him and he said it again. "Pandora." He leaned over and made that retching sound again, but nothing came up. He hung the, bent over, panting for a long moment. Then he straightened, staring first at Jason, then Samara, and finally looked at Theo.

"Pandora Zurlo will kill you all." Those six words were spoken with perfect clarity, and then his eyes glazed once more. He let out a strange whopping sound and turned, barrelling through the crowd at top speed.

In moments, he'd hooked a corner, turned down and alley and was gone.

"Well, I gather that we've gotten our answer," Theodore said still in a bit of a deadpan manner, watching as Frood disappeared into the crowd. He was somewhat shaken by this, but had buried that feeling to look at the mothe and child once more.

"Are you alright?" he asked, turning and looking back at her once more, and then looking at the little boy. Actual concern revealed itself for that brief moment--it was like a tune in his repertoire that wasn't played too often since it was far too personal and heartfelt.

They watched the man run off, Samara feeling strange and hallow inside. Despite hearing the name, it didn't seem to help alleviate any of the tension inside of her. She still felt just as confused and worried as before.

"Who's Pandora Zurlo, Mum?"

"Not right now, Jase." Samara replied.

She looked up at Theodore, surprised at the concern he seemed to have for them. She hadn't known him that well, yet his concern seemed genuine. "Er, we're fine, I think." Her hands were still shaking on her son's shoulders, betraying her words. "Thank you for asking, Theodore."

"Indeed you are," he said, looking down at the child before looking back at her. Of course she wouldn't show her worry in front of Jase as children easily do pick up on that sort of thing and would also worry. Or maybe it was the shock and the need to process the whole incident.

"You're welcome. In any case, if you do feel concerned please feel free to send me an owl. I am typically quick to reply." He paused for a moment before continuing. "Pandora Zurlo," he said, crouching down to be at least somewhat more level with the child. "Is--was--Gellert Grindelwald's most loyal follower. Every wizard needs someone to carry out his ideals. Behind every great man there's a great woman, after all." He stood up and returned his gaze to Samara. "Take care."

With all the odd things happening these days, she shouldn't be very surprised to have something else strange occur, but she couldn't help be taken aback by his utter kindness for someone who, for all intents and purposes, was really a stranger. Sure they went to school together and saw each other at social events throughout the years but they had never been close in any way.

She nodded. "Thank you for the offer. I might just do that." It felt odd to want to talk to someone else besides her husband, but they hadn't had the best conversation the night before and could it really hurt? Not to mention he was addressing Jason like a human being rather than some annoying thing like many often did with children his age.

Jase listened carefully to Theodore and when he was finished looked up at his mother. "Like you and Da? He's a great wizard so you're the great woman behind him, yeah?"

Samara couldn't help but smile, despite the fight they might have had the night before. She loved her husband and what her son said was true for the most part. She would always stand behind her husband, no matter what. "Yes, love, I suppose that is right. Thank you, Theodore. I hope you have a pleasant day."

"Goodbye Theodore!" Jason said too, waving after the man whom he now probably had an affection for seeing as he had spoken to him on his own level.
