Perhaps. We can't know how intelligent they are. [It's hard to gauge the intelligence of something that wants to eat you.] Being driven by instinct is no guarantee that a being lacks sentience entirely.

You a vegetarian? [ Genuinely curious. This is the kind of thing Rebecca would say. ]

No, and this is the cause of much internal conflict. [He's not serious, mostly. Maybe a little serious.] We grow most of our meat when I'm from.

You grow it? Isn't that the way, uhm... isn't that th' way most meat come to be? You grow an animal? [ Weird way of phrasing it but animals grow. Baby chicks grow into big chickens. That's what you mean, right? This isn't some vat of synthetic meat sludge? ]

No, no, not a whole animal. Only muscle tissues. [Meat sludge? Ew. And this is a good conversation to have when there are things out there that want to eat them.] It would be wasteful to grow more of an animal than that.

So... no one where you're from know how to use th' whole animal? What do you do for leather or jello? Hell, sausage casings?

[Chekov's blank look gives away just how much of a city kid he is. A city kid from the future! Don't listen to him; some people still prefer getting their food and leather the old fashioned way.] We have replicators for all of that.

So... instead of keepin' animals that you can have as companions an' warmth, you grow their parts... out of what? What're you eatin' up there?

[ Soylent? ]

In vitro animal tissues. [Duh, what else would they be eating. The shocking thing here is what Aidan just said.] You keep the animals you eat as companions? And you still eat them?

[ Gross. ]

Yeah, of course. Seems more honest, y'know... you're killin' somethin' either way, might as well look it in th' eye when you do.

[No, you!]

I would rather not kill my companions at all.

So why aren't you a vegetarian, then? Instead of growin' meat in a jar. [ Like a freak. ]

I like meat grown in a jar. [Geez, when you say it like that, it sounds really gross?.]

You are very invested in my tastes. Are you worried that the dinosaurs would rather eat you than me because my diet is poor?

I dunno. 's just interestin' I guess, hearin' what people are used to. Ain't like none of this is real anyway so it ain't like I can show you what real grass fed meat not grown in a jar taste like.

The meat here is as real as anything else—our environment, our bodies. But since your opinion on this is so strong, I promise that I will try real meat the next time I visit Earth.

So not real at all, then. [ Right? ] An' fair enough... ain't more that I can do, I suppose.

For now, we should probably make real sure we don't end up meat ourselves.

I'm reluctant to commit to a stance on how real or unreal any of this is.

You can stay with me. I can make sure that nothing tries to eat you.

Thanks. You're my hero. [ He grins, hefting the baseball bat up on his shoulder. ] Promise I won't give you too much to do.
