He seems to be doing a lot of backing around corners, but perhaps that's what happens when you're constantly on the look out for more raptors and more wasps, not to mention the glimpses of unknown things out of the corner of your eye.

This time, at least Jezebel's voice alerts him to her presence in time to turn around before he actually bumps into her, but he's still nervy as hell (and sweating and stripped down to his t-shirt, the gashes down his arm from the raptor now mostly healed but still evident).

He sees what appears to be a young girl in a pretty dress - yet another person who's not in the Defence Force and who shouldn't be out here risking themselves.

"For goodness sake, get yourself indoors before the wasps and raptors get you!" he says, a lot more brusquely than he normally would, due to the unformed dread that keeps washing over him.

"That's what I'm trying to do!" She's quick to retort, still recovering from the jolt of that lurking feeling actually resulting in a person scuttling toward her. It's a knee jerk reaction that results in a pause as she regards Jack for a second. See, there's this silly thing where she's not even sure what a wasp or a raptor's supposed to look like. What are they? They certainly weren't in Hell.

"But I've gotten turned around and - well, I don't understand mortal technology and oh! You're bleeding."

"What were you even doing out in the first place?" he demands, because here we go, another damsel in distress who's out here risking herself for no reason.

At her comment, he glances down at his arm. He ditched the makeshift bandage of his shirt a while ago when it stopped bleeding, so the gashes are plain to see, though they don't look anywhere near as fresh as they would on someone without his powers of healing. "Yeah, that's what you get when you tangle with a raptor," he rasps out, hoping to make her realise how much danger she's in - and then pauses, studying her. "Mortal technology? You're another immortal?"

"I'm no human, that's for sure." She quips, feeding off his annoyance and bouncing it back at him. Her wings shift with her posture, huffy as she crosses her arms while looking at him. It doesn't register for her that he might be speaking of his own immortality, much rather she thinks of other demons and the like of Spike's vampiric nature.

"I was trying to go somewhere. I don't have a home here yet, I've been bouncing all around the place but suddenly it's eternal night and I don't know where I'm supposed to be headed." She scratches at the back of her neck, the spot still feels prickly. "But what's a raptor?"

He hadn't noticed the wings yet, in the dark, but he does now and takes in the - horns? - on her head too and rapidly reassesses. Perhaps not as helpless as she looks then. But even so...

"Still would be a really good idea to just hole up anywhere for the day and get back to apartment-picking tomorrow," he says, but his tone has gentled a fraction. "A raptor is a large reptile - about the same size as me - with very sharp claws and teeth. They're fast and they're strong, and these gashes on my arm would look a whole lot worse if a) I'd been alone when they gone me and b) I healed at the rate of a normal human."

His teeth show in a brief, tight grin, and he finally offers her his hand. "Captain Jack Harkness, immortal. And we really should continue this conversation inside."

Not least because he can hear something that might be raptors approaching from not too far off.

She looks at his hand for a beat before extending her own, not all that well practiced in handshakes but willing to try it. The name Jack makes her perk up because oh she's heard of you but there is so much info to ingest she just momentarily nods her head. A thousand gears turn in a few short seconds before she spits out her first, of many, curious question.

"You're a Captain? Of what?" Oh, and. "And you're not a normal human?"

Her awkwardness in shaking his hand tells him she's definitely not from what he would term a 'normal' version of Earth. He doesn't make a big thing out of it, partly because he's not feeling his usual charming self, and partly because those raptors are not getting any further away. He glances around, checking out the possibilities for holing up somewhere and spots The Bakery just down the road. Small, defensible, and presumably housing some decently long knives in the kitchen out the back just in case.

"Currently Captain of Sectors 0-2 for the Defence Force," he says rather grimly, and yes, he did notice that flicker of recognition at his name, but he's going to leave that for the moment in favour of getting indoors. His hand appears in the small of her back, encouraging her along. "Come on, in here. Immortal or not, I'd rather not have to fight off any more of those things today."

"Oh, okay!" She says, realizing she's being ushered along and going with it. She heads toward the bakery, squinting at it as they draw near. But before more questions bubble up she should get to the ones at the top of the queue.

Her hand on the doorhandle, just before she pulls it open to go inside, she looks back at him. "I think Spike told me about you!"

He sighs in frustration when she pauses before getting inside, and impatiently pushes her aside in order to get his own hand on the handle. "Get inside!" he hisses and pretty much shoves her in, tendrils of unreasonable fear curling around his insides as strongly as the fear of the approaching raptors.

He pauses in the doorway to check the street for sight of them, but can't make any out in the dark and eventually he slips inside and pulls the door shut behind him, slamming the bolts at top and bottom and then drawing her away from the door too, just in case.

Only then does he take in what she's just said. "Spike?" he echoes, a gamut of mixed emotions running through him because, especially after their little run-in earlier, things are so very, very complicated with Spike.

Jezebel stumbles on in and honestly, it's not the first time she's been shoved around so she's rather used to it but she still stubbornly leans against it. However, nonchalant or not, she does end up inside the bakery and nods her head to Jack. She heard quite a bit about you from being someone to look out for to also you know, being the person to ask for dating advice.

"I met him a few days ago. He seemed very nice." By demon standards, anyway. "He said you'd be the person to go to for dating advice."

Luckily (for her safety if not for any bruises she might end up with), Jack's big and heavy and well-practised at manhandling people where they don't want to go, so he wins the battle. And then, once he's got the door secured, he heads back into the kitchen to search for a knife, his skin crawling as he thinks about Spike.

"You really think this is the time to ask for dating advice?" he asks tightly, gesturing out at the dark night in the middle of the day, filled with monsters and demons and who knows what else.

At least the lights are working at the moment so it's not too dark in here, though even as he thinks it they give a warning flicker.

"Well, I wasn't about to ask now - I was just explaining." She says with a small huff, clearly not all that concerned. She plants her hands on her hips and gives a little shrug. "But from my point of view there doesn't seem to be much else to do now that you've locked us up in here. Besides maybe eating bread."

She pokes a loaf on a shelf before curiously looking into a display case.

He finds a knife of a fairly decent length (though he still wishes he had a sword to reach those raptors without getting sliced and diced by their claws and teeth) and comes back into the front of the shop to find Jezebel investigating a loaf of bread.

"Actually, that's not a bad idea," he says, heading over to the display of pastries. "I completely forgot about eating today." And okay, there's too much apprehension and adrenaline running around his system for him to actually want to eat, but he knows he'll probably feel better if he can eat.

He digs out a plate of pastries and offers it to her. "Pain au chocolat?"

She cocks her head as she looks at him, looking at what he's offering before reaching forward to take one and give it a curious sniff. It smells really delightful, actually, so she happily takes a bite. Food that isn't Hell-sourced is so... flavorful, it's really strange to get used to it. And it's not all warm and sizzling for a change. "It's very good," she murmurs after a mouth full.

"I'm Jezebel. It was rude not to introduce myself before we came inside..." Because obviously that should've been an option before seeking shelter. Priorities.

He watches her size up the pastries and eventually bite into one with vague amusement, and decides to follow her example. The burst of buttery sweetness over his tongue is definitely comforting and by the time he's taken a few bites he's actually starting to feel a little better.

Or perhaps it's just that the wasp venom is starting to wear off at last. Who knows?

"Good to meet you, Jezebel," he nods, and even manages a tiny smile. He leans a hip against the shelves, too wired still to actually sit down but starting to relax, just a little. "Don't worry about it. Manners can get a little lost in the heat of things. So where are you from, Jezebel?"

"Hell." She says casually after a second bite, having been through this introduction a good few times already. And people are taking it remarkably well, more so when they find out who her father is. Not a single pitchfork wielding mob around. Though, she does remember Spike's words about being careful not to stir trouble.

"You can imagine it's something of a change for me here." She smiles at Jack.

Dark eyebrows climb his forehead and he pauses with his pastry halfway to his mouth. "Hell as in literal Hell, all fire and brimstone? Or hell as in My dad's mean and never lets me go out with boys and won't buy me all the cool things I want?"

Or something in between, of course.

"Both, actually." She quips back, before taking another little bite.

Might as well get into the story, starting off with a roll of her eyes. "My dad's Satan. I grew up in New Hades, Hell my whole life. I was stuck in a tower having to obey his rules or face becoming a thrall. He tried to marry me off twice without me getting even a small say in the matter." Deep sigh, shoulder slumping.

"...Right. Sounds like a whole lot of fun!" Not. He eats the rest of his pastry and asks, because he always focusses on the insignificant parts, "New Hades? There's an Old Hades too?"

"I'd... I'd think so." She says, brows briefly creasing in thought. "I haven't really thought about it before." Or questioned it, really. Questioning things her father did usually resulted in a slap across the face. He wasn't a Dad of the Year award winner.

"It's not an awful city, really... I mean it's organized a lot like this place." Irony. "But way less water and a little more run down. The occupants are there against their will working off their Sins... but they're a little more um. Ragged looking, to say the least."

"The dome reminds you of Hell? Well, that's comforting." And nicely distracting from the noises outside. "Although I guess not that unexpected."

He cocks his head, vaguely amused. "Does anyone ever get out of Hell, either? Apart from by being transported here, obviously!"

"Well..." Her expression is a bit squeezed, because realistically - eternal damnation's a thing. Even if you're supposedly able to pay off your sins and get out of there, her father doesn't necessarily make it an easy or fair task.

"You can be exiled... it's not common, but it happens." When her father's embarrassed, usually. "That's what happened to me and my ex-fiances."

"Exiled from Hell? That's a new one on me!" He chooses another pastry - now he's started eating he's realising he's famished - and then looks up at her curiously. "Where do they send you that's worse than Hell?"

Jezebel laughs lightly, looking behind her before dragging closer a chair from a small table setting. She sits down on it and crosses her legs, tending to her pastry but looking like a school girl ready to divulge a great dose of gossip. "That's just the thing, I was expecting the mortal realm! But I ended up here, but the others didn't..."

"So I guess they caught me in the middle, which isn't really fair - especially if the President, Johnny and his friend aren't here too." Huff.

Rather than joining her by actually sitting down properly, her movement reminds Jack that there's something else he'd normally enjoy with his pastries and he wanders back behind the counter in search of coffee, still munching.

"So, Earth, huh?" he observes wryly, with a good deal of amusement. The different worlds or realms or realities or whatever the people here come from rarely fail to stimulate interesting conversation!

He finds the coffee machine and heads over to it. "To be fair, this place isn't that different from Earth, really, except a lot smaller." And without the option to leave it, though most people don't get that either. He glances outside towards the screeching raptors. "Well, and the raptors. Don't tend to get a lot of those in modern-day Earth. At least - are you modern-day? Do you even have calendars in Hell?"
