370 - Fear Itself: The Revenge

Jack is out and about, patrolling 'his' sectors (0-2), armed with his revolver and a big torch, with several smaller torches in his pockets to hand out to people who need them. He'll be battling raptors and hyena wasps, and will certainly run into the fray if he hears anyone scream, because even if *everyone* can come back from death now, old habits die hard, in his case literally.

There might also be moments when the fear comes close to overwhelming him. Last time this happened, it was Ianto's dead body he saw round every corner, in every shadow. This time, it's Ianto leaving him for Spike. Feel free to catch him staring into empty space with a devastated look on his face.

Considering that he's fighting a lot of wasps (and trying to shield other people from them), it's almost certainly a given that he's going to get stung at least once, so you may well come across him giggling uncontrollably and/or displaying any of the other side-effects. Stripping off because of the heat? Oh yeah. :-D

For the moment, Spike has abandoned the idea of carrying a flaming torch to ward off raptors in favor of moving quicker through the darkness. He can see as well as in broad daylight after all, the light was never for his benefit. The coat is back at the apartment too — you don't risk tearing a one-of-a-kind deal like that if you can help it and from what he remembers of last time this happened, raptors have a bite to them.

So, just him, t-shirt and jeans, hair slicked back and black wristband out and proud on his wrist when he stumbles into Jack's path, freezing immediately. Not part of the plan.

"Hey."

He'd been vaguely relieved when the first crisis the Dome had seen in quite some time meant that his and Ianto's planned talk with Spike had been shelved in favour of patrolling and fighting raptors.

Bumping into Spike in the dark instead? Well, it actually makes him freeze for a moment because the reason he wasn't looking where he was going is that he was backing away round a corner from a gang of at least four raptors.

As ice-breakers go, it's a pretty good one.

"Hey," he says, after a moment, as the raptors round the corner too and come into view, shrieking and baring their teeth. He fires a couple of shots and one drops but the rest are getting too close now and he switches to the long kitchen knife (the longest he could find) in his other hand.

"How are you with raptors?" he asks breathlessly, slashing grimly as the raptors dive in.

Oh thank fuck there's a situation to deal with. He'd rather face a hoard of raptors than attempt a civilised conversation with Jack right now as is evident in how he grins and vamps out rather than show any kind of concern for their safety.

"Oh, I can hold my own."

And into the fray he goes, with no weapons other than his fangs and fists. They've done him well so far and he has yet to find an opponent he can't beat by punching it in the face. Can't run out of ammo, either.

It's certainly a lot easier than having to talk. He's aware of Spike diving into battle beside him, and that's a relief too, because he wasn't sure he could fight off all three remaining raptors by himself and, okay, if he dies he comes back but if he dies before killing the raptors then they go off to attack someone else and that's not part of the plan.

Even with Spike dealing with two of them, the one he's fighting gets in far too close, simply because his kitchen knife just isn't long enough to do much damage without getting in dangerously close. He cries out as razor-sharp claws rake down his arm, sharp enough to shred even the thick wool of his coat and right through to skin. He holsters his gun and switches hands with the knife, and dances back to try and find another angle to come at the monster, grinding out, "I really need to try and request a proper sword for times like this!"

Then he's plunging at the raptor again, knife driving deep into its belly as it screeches down at him. It goes down, but the knife is stuck in its body and it's twitching too hard for him to get close enough to make a grab for it, for a minute.

Hey, someone told him not that long ago that maybe he should try this hero thing once in a while and okay, it's not boring. In fact, he might be having a little too fun with it, tearing and punching at whatever part of lizard he can get a hold of, feeling a sense of liberation he hasn't experienced since he realized he can punch non-humans in the face without the chip acting up.

The thing about being dead is that you can have a big dumb lizard bite deep into your arm without it doing all that much damage, allowing you to punch it really hard in the eye until it lets go. It's a neat little tactic and one he's deployed without much thought about how long it takes to heal here. Still, if it works it works and before long he snaps the raptors neck, leaving one straggler left standing.

"Think you can head it off before it bolts?"

Jack hasn't really cottoned on to the fact that Spike's doing this to help save other people rather than just because it's fun/he likes a fight/to save his own ass (delete as applicable). He certainly seems to be enjoying it, given the relish with which he's punching at the raptor and the glee with which he snaps its neck.

Spike's so gleeful that Jack doesn't even realise he's injured too. He flicks a glance back at him when he makes that remark, even as the raptor he felled finally goes limp and he darts in to retrieve his knife.

"Why, you going somewhere?" he asks glibly, diving after the straggler as it belatedly starts to turn and run. In fact, he ends up diving right onto it, clinging to its back and being dragged along as it struggles to get airborne with his extra weight on it, while he tries to get his arm underneath it to stab it somewhere the knife won't just bounce off.

Eh, he'll live. Or rather, he can't exactly get any more dead and a bite like this is more of a nuisance than a real problem. Maybe Ianto was right, maybe he really does have a type — immortal men with dramatic coats and fake names, was it? Funny how no one saw this coming.

"I've been told I need to learn how to share!"

And with Jack slowing the raptor down he can catch up and head it off, making a grab for it's jaw to wrench the head to the side. Lizard skin is thick and tough to get through but if you find the soft spot on its throat you can do enough damage and that's what he intends to do. It feels good to bite again, even if raptors taste disgusting.

That gets him a much longer, assessing stare - or at least, as long as Jack can give whilst being hauled along by a raptor, which isn't very. He's still trying to find an angle to pierce its touch hide whilst dodging the long and pointed beak that's trying to turn and snap at him when Spike manages to grab it and bite it instead. Rather than being repulsed as some might be, Jack laughs, still clinging to it to try and help hold it still enough to let Spike do his thing. He has no idea if a vampire bite will be enough to kill it, but even if it doesn't, it's distracted the creature long enough for him to finally get his knife in between the scales and do some actual damage.

Most events don't get to her — most events haven't even affected her, but this one is succeeding at getting under her skin. It has her on edge and terrified of every little thing that darts out unexpectedly from the shadows.

She screams when she nearly collides with Jack after rounding a corner, pressing a hand to her chest as she stumbles back in a manner very unlike herself.

"You shouldn't sneak up on people like that," the princess snaps, for her way of handling fear is to mask it with anger.

The bump makes him jump even more than it did her. He's coatless and stripped down to his t-shirt, with his bloodied outer shirt wrapped around his arm in lieu of bandages, and he's sweating and giggling and looking distinctly wild around the eyes. He turns on her just as angrily, shining the big torch in his hands at her face, relaxing just a little when he sees who it is. Not enough to stop him snapping right back at her though.

"I wasn't sneaking! You were the one doing the sneaking!"

"Oh yes, allow me to just waltz around, loudly announcing my presence for everyone to hear," she throws back. "Brilliant strategy. I don't know why I didn't think of it myself."

Usually only Han gets the pleasure of experiencing that level of sarcasm from her, but she's bubbling with agitation and a restlessness that's both her own and not. Sometimes, being immensely Force-sensitive works against you — especially when you're untrained. This would be one of those times.

Jack doesn't really know much about the Force and how it manifests in Leia, and he's very much not himself at the moment so knowing probably wouldn't help very much anyway.

He draws breath to point out that she's speaking loudly enough right now to show everyone within a couple of blocks where she is, but all that comes out is a slightly histerical giggle. He clamps a hand over his mouth and tries to muffle them because he suddenly realises the eerie laughter isn't all coming from him. There are wasps on their way too.

"Stop that!" Leia yells even louder, her ability to stay quiet apparently neutralized by how afraid she is under all that bravado. "This isn't funny. Nothing about any of this is funny!"

"I can't help it!" he yells, his eyes wild because he really doesn't like being out of control like this, and those wasps are getting closer. "I got stung, okay? By some of those!"

He points, as a couple of the massive wasps round the corner and start heading for them. He fires off a shot - his last precious bullet - and one drops, but the other keeps on coming. He looks around desperately. "We need to get inside. I'm out of ammo."

Leia despises not being in control of herself, of having her emotions toyed with like this. Fear is something she feels almost constantly, but it's something she's good at keeping in check and molding into things like anger and determination. Being afraid and incapable of being anything but is infuriating and upsetting on levels she's incapable of handling properly on a day like today.

But at least whatever's messing with her now isn't affecting her connection to the Force, for she's easily able to throw her hands out and send the wasps Jack was unable to hit with his bullets flying back. They slam into one of the buildings, but the shove only stuns them.

She reaches for him, grabbing hold of his wrist. "Come on!"

He watches wide-eyed as some invisible force slams the wasps back against the wall. He's never seen the Force being used and it's - well, compared to his gun (now sadly completely out of bullets), it's awesome. He resists Leia's tugging for a moment, still mesmerised; then one of the wasps starts twitching again and he turns and runs along with her.

"That was fantastic, what you did there! What was it?"

She hasn't been here that long at all so naturally the streets and sectors are still confusing but today makes it one Hell of a different playground all together when the lights stay out and the walls seem to crush in on her. This fidgeting, nervous anxiety makes her want to skitter along faster but she's gotten herself undeniably turned around and tech's not exactly her strong point. Trying to use the headset to get back on track's actually hard in the dark, with what feels like... something always lurking in her shadow.

"Hello?" It's not the first time her voice calls out after a shuffling noise or a too-close breath she's nimbly attempting to avoid. Her wings flutter tucked beneath the layer of her jacket, an unnerved twitch. She backs around a corner, lining up for a collision course with Jack.

He seems to be doing a lot of backing around corners, but perhaps that's what happens when you're constantly on the look out for more raptors and more wasps, not to mention the glimpses of unknown things out of the corner of your eye.

This time, at least Jezebel's voice alerts him to her presence in time to turn around before he actually bumps into her, but he's still nervy as hell (and sweating and stripped down to his t-shirt, the gashes down his arm from the raptor now mostly healed but still evident).

He sees what appears to be a young girl in a pretty dress - yet another person who's not in the Defence Force and who shouldn't be out here risking themselves.

"For goodness sake, get yourself indoors before the wasps and raptors get you!" he says, a lot more brusquely than he normally would, due to the unformed dread that keeps washing over him.

"That's what I'm trying to do!" She's quick to retort, still recovering from the jolt of that lurking feeling actually resulting in a person scuttling toward her. It's a knee jerk reaction that results in a pause as she regards Jack for a second. See, there's this silly thing where she's not even sure what a wasp or a raptor's supposed to look like. What are they? They certainly weren't in Hell.

"But I've gotten turned around and - well, I don't understand mortal technology and oh! You're bleeding."

"What were you even doing out in the first place?" he demands, because here we go, another damsel in distress who's out here risking herself for no reason.

At her comment, he glances down at his arm. He ditched the makeshift bandage of his shirt a while ago when it stopped bleeding, so the gashes are plain to see, though they don't look anywhere near as fresh as they would on someone without his powers of healing. "Yeah, that's what you get when you tangle with a raptor," he rasps out, hoping to make her realise how much danger she's in - and then pauses, studying her. "Mortal technology? You're another immortal?"

"I'm no human, that's for sure." She quips, feeding off his annoyance and bouncing it back at him. Her wings shift with her posture, huffy as she crosses her arms while looking at him. It doesn't register for her that he might be speaking of his own immortality, much rather she thinks of other demons and the like of Spike's vampiric nature.

"I was trying to go somewhere. I don't have a home here yet, I've been bouncing all around the place but suddenly it's eternal night and I don't know where I'm supposed to be headed." She scratches at the back of her neck, the spot still feels prickly. "But what's a raptor?"

He hadn't noticed the wings yet, in the dark, but he does now and takes in the - horns? - on her head too and rapidly reassesses. Perhaps not as helpless as she looks then. But even so...

"Still would be a really good idea to just hole up anywhere for the day and get back to apartment-picking tomorrow," he says, but his tone has gentled a fraction. "A raptor is a large reptile - about the same size as me - with very sharp claws and teeth. They're fast and they're strong, and these gashes on my arm would look a whole lot worse if a) I'd been alone when they gone me and b) I healed at the rate of a normal human."

His teeth show in a brief, tight grin, and he finally offers her his hand. "Captain Jack Harkness, immortal. And we really should continue this conversation inside."

Not least because he can hear something that might be raptors approaching from not too far off.

She looks at his hand for a beat before extending her own, not all that well practiced in handshakes but willing to try it. The name Jack makes her perk up because oh she's heard of you but there is so much info to ingest she just momentarily nods her head. A thousand gears turn in a few short seconds before she spits out her first, of many, curious question.

"You're a Captain? Of what?" Oh, and. "And you're not a normal human?"

Her awkwardness in shaking his hand tells him she's definitely not from what he would term a 'normal' version of Earth. He doesn't make a big thing out of it, partly because he's not feeling his usual charming self, and partly because those raptors are not getting any further away. He glances around, checking out the possibilities for holing up somewhere and spots The Bakery just down the road. Small, defensible, and presumably housing some decently long knives in the kitchen out the back just in case.

"Currently Captain of Sectors 0-2 for the Defence Force," he says rather grimly, and yes, he did notice that flicker of recognition at his name, but he's going to leave that for the moment in favour of getting indoors. His hand appears in the small of her back, encouraging her along. "Come on, in here. Immortal or not, I'd rather not have to fight off any more of those things today."
