DAY 365 — Anniversary Festival Mingle

Happy Day 365, Marina Nova!

Hear ye, hear ye! Inmates, prisoners, fellow underwater dwellers! Lend me your ears and hands and actually just bring all of you because we're having a ye olde Renaissance Faire to celebrate a full year in this bubble under the sea!

The dome has of course been decked out appropriately. Flickering torches light the pathways, interspersed with larger bonfires that you can cosy up to with that special someone - or perhaps just a glass of honey mead. Pennant banners hang across the gates and along the buildings, sporting the proud coat of arms of the prison (a lot of purple and octopi, for some reason) and many of the clothing stores offer time-appropriate options for those of you who still knows how to have fun. The kiosk has even been re-imagined into a castle.

Many areas within the dome has activities to partake in and, if you're skilled or lucky or both, prizes to win!

Sector 5 Gamegrounds: What better way to show your bravery than by participating in a series of tests of strength and cunning? Sector 5 provides the inmates with a chance to try such varied sports as varpa, caber tossing, ring toss or the very dignified sport of rövkrok, a type of wrestling that requires skill as well as no sense of shame. Not tough enough for you? There are also friendly foam weapons and armor available for those who want to engage in a chivalrous bout of hand to hand combat, test your archery skills — or maybe convince another prisoner to give you a piggyback ride and go jousting!

Competitors that do well enough and show outstanding bravery may be rewarded with a handful of rehab points, or a personalized pennant — or maybe a kiss from the lord or lady of your choosing!

Less violent activities: Not into skewering your neighbors on spears? Maybe you'd rather relax with a game of knucklebones, pick up sticks or Nine Men's Morris. Boards and instructions are readily available in several areas. If you're more creatively inclined there's also activity tables on offer where you can create your own coat of arms, bind yourself a flower crown or learn the art of illumination.

Food: The food carts in sector 0 are now carrying food fit for the occasion. Whole roasted pigs and poultry, wild rabbit in plum sauce, thick beef stews smelling of rich saffron, roasted vegetables (no potatoes here, no sir!) and cream-stewed cabbage for the vegetarians among us. If you're still hungry there's saffron pancake, ginger and clove cookies or bread pudding with raisins for dessert. There's plenty of mulled wine, honey mead, foaming beer, honeyd applewater and lingonberry juice to wash it down with. Enjoy!

Dance: As is custom, there will be a dance at the beach at the end of the day. Great fires will roar and a band of robots will strike up music suitable for dancing! Dress up in your finest satin and velvet, brush the extrement off your shoes and grab a partner!

Enjoy!

"All flesh and blood dies." She tilts her head, as if she doesn't entirely get it or perhaps can't get it.

"You're lucky we could bring you back here. Not everyone has that chance."

"But that's not the point! The point is you apparently look after us and I still died. And I now remember exactly what that felt like and it was horrible."

"We look after your body. If we had to babysit your mind, we would never do anything else."

Her tone is still even, though you could perhaps not call it gentle anymore. There's a coldness to it, a darkness that bleeds out into a slight distortion around her form. Like a haze, subtle, more noticed in a vague sense of wrongness than anything tangible.

It's like arguing with Jareth. She feels that it's starting to go wrong, but she has to keep going. She's stubborn after all.

"It's not fair!"

If she were standing, she would have stamped her foot as well.

"Nothing is, Sarah." Her tone doesn't change, though it seems to multiply. Subtly, like a swarm of insects chittering in unison, creating depth and dimensions where there shouldn't be.

"The sooner you realize that, the sooner you can move on."

"Move on from dying? I don't think a matter of fairness or not is going to help me just move on from all that. And I think you're all rather rude to just kidnap people from their lives and put them in a prison when they're mostly doing their best to fix mistakes they made."

She really should be running away. Or not talking.

"Most people don't get to move on from dying. Most people end up six feet under, slowly turning into a sludge of organs and bacteria, seeping into the dirt until there's nothing left but bones. Most people don't get to fix their mistakes, or correct their behaviour. Most people don't get a chance to rehabilitate."

Her voice lowers, chitters.

"We don't kidnap, we're doing you a favor."

"A favor? How is it a favor? I need to save my brother, and I certainly don't get to do that here. Are you ever planning on letting us out after we rehabilitate? Or are we just stuck here forever. I don't remember an end date when I arrived."

Her hands grab up the flower crown and start worrying it. All her hard work falls into bits of petal and leaf.

"You're not going back." Maybe disconnecting, maybe being put into storage... but not going home. That's not part of the deal.

"Think about the possibilities here, Sarah. What you can do here that you can't do back home."

"But how is any of this helpful if I can't save my brother? Jareth has him, and I'm the only one who can save him. Why can't I go do that, and then you bring me back here to continue my life imprisonment?"

"Why is your brother in trouble, Sarah?"

She knows. Not the full story, just what's on the girl's profile, but certainly enough to rattle the cage and see what happens.

"Because I wished the goblin king would take him. I didn't know that he was real... and I know that's why I'm here. But now he's in even bigger trouble because I'm not there to help him. Trouble he wouldn't be in if I were still in the Labyrinth."

"And what makes you think you won't cause more trouble if you go back?" Not that it matters. It's a moot point.

"Your brother is perfectly safe, Sarah."

"I probably will cause more trouble. But I can save him. At least I have to try. No one else can."

Her breath catches when Mary adds her platitude.

"How do you know?"

"Because I know."

She smiles, the darkness and multiple voices ebbing out.

"I'm sorry. That's not good enough."

Sarah stands, her forgotten crown falling to the ground. She tramples it in her agitation.

"I need to go."

"Very well."

She picks at the flowers for a moment longer, putting the finishing touches on a complicated web of stems that is about as far from a crown as you can get.

"I'll see you around, Sarah."
