DAY 365 — Anniversary Festival Mingle

Happy Day 365, Marina Nova!

Hear ye, hear ye! Inmates, prisoners, fellow underwater dwellers! Lend me your ears and hands and actually just bring all of you because we're having a ye olde Renaissance Faire to celebrate a full year in this bubble under the sea!

The dome has of course been decked out appropriately. Flickering torches light the pathways, interspersed with larger bonfires that you can cosy up to with that special someone - or perhaps just a glass of honey mead. Pennant banners hang across the gates and along the buildings, sporting the proud coat of arms of the prison (a lot of purple and octopi, for some reason) and many of the clothing stores offer time-appropriate options for those of you who still knows how to have fun. The kiosk has even been re-imagined into a castle.

Many areas within the dome has activities to partake in and, if you're skilled or lucky or both, prizes to win!

Sector 5 Gamegrounds: What better way to show your bravery than by participating in a series of tests of strength and cunning? Sector 5 provides the inmates with a chance to try such varied sports as varpa, caber tossing, ring toss or the very dignified sport of rövkrok, a type of wrestling that requires skill as well as no sense of shame. Not tough enough for you? There are also friendly foam weapons and armor available for those who want to engage in a chivalrous bout of hand to hand combat, test your archery skills — or maybe convince another prisoner to give you a piggyback ride and go jousting!

Competitors that do well enough and show outstanding bravery may be rewarded with a handful of rehab points, or a personalized pennant — or maybe a kiss from the lord or lady of your choosing!

Less violent activities: Not into skewering your neighbors on spears? Maybe you'd rather relax with a game of knucklebones, pick up sticks or Nine Men's Morris. Boards and instructions are readily available in several areas. If you're more creatively inclined there's also activity tables on offer where you can create your own coat of arms, bind yourself a flower crown or learn the art of illumination.

Food: The food carts in sector 0 are now carrying food fit for the occasion. Whole roasted pigs and poultry, wild rabbit in plum sauce, thick beef stews smelling of rich saffron, roasted vegetables (no potatoes here, no sir!) and cream-stewed cabbage for the vegetarians among us. If you're still hungry there's saffron pancake, ginger and clove cookies or bread pudding with raisins for dessert. There's plenty of mulled wine, honey mead, foaming beer, honeyd applewater and lingonberry juice to wash it down with. Enjoy!

Dance: As is custom, there will be a dance at the beach at the end of the day. Great fires will roar and a band of robots will strike up music suitable for dancing! Dress up in your finest satin and velvet, brush the extrement off your shoes and grab a partner!

Enjoy!

I asked for an explanation of virtual reality in case it wasn't exactly what it sounded like. [The problem here, clearly, is that Felix thinks that Felix is an idiot.] None of my follow-up was brilliant, either.

I kind of doubt he's holding that against you in a battle of intellect. He's a pretty good guy.

Most people here seem pretty good. I can't decide if I should trust everyone or be suspicious on principle. [Truth delivered like a joke!] What do you recommend?

I usually tell myself not to trust, do it anyway, and get hurt. I think if it was a logical decision we'd all do it less.

Has trusting ever not led to being hurt here? [Not that it would make a difference. She's right; it's not a logical decision.]

Would it sound too cynical if I said there isn't always time to prove it was a mistake? It would, right? Yeah. Okay, then I'll say sure.

That's... hopeful. [Somehow, acknowledging the cynicism didn't make it go away. Maybe they need to talk about something less heavy. There's a pause while he casts about for a sensible segue.]

I was going to change the topic, but I don't remember what people talk about at parties. Any ideas?

Sorry. [She doesn't like being a downer for what it's worth.]

The weather maybe? Or they're just trying to flirt their way into each other's pants. Or ridiculously elaborate dresses.

Don't be. I asked.

Weather sounds like the safer of those two options. [Even if flirting sounds a lot more fun.] What kind of weather can an artificial underwater prison expect? Should I invest in a pair of snowboots?

Actually? Yes. You'll probably only need them every couple of months, but some days you're going to wake up to snow. Once it rained fruit punch. [She says it with a smirk. Absolutely true though. This is better somehow.]

Snowboots and a poncho. Got it. I won't even ask how fruit punch was supposed to further the rehabilitation process.

Exactly. And technically, someone else had taken over the controls, but I suspect only because the wardens let him. [You get answers to questions you didn't even ask!]

Was this him associated with the wardens, or one of us? I'd hope one of our own would do more than get whimsical with the weather if he had access to controls.

One of us, but a very strange one of us. You'd probably have had to meet him to believe he was real.

It's hard to deny an arm going right through you.

He was a tiny robot who wore a green dog costume and was probably insane. [How do you feel about it being a robot though?]

[The robot part is overshadowed by the green dog costume part and the insane part, believe it or not. Dog costumes and insanity are not robot things!]

That's bizarre. Has anyone ever told you how bizarre everything is here?

No. Everyone else thinks it's totally normal. You must come from the world of normalcy. Cargo pants and accounting and sedans. [These are normal things, right? Relatable to someone from space too.]

Not quite. I'm familiar with accounting. [The robot band switches to a more up-tempo ye olde song.] Sounds like it's your turn to lead.

None of them are really things at home anymore. [She does, indeed, start leading. But why let that break conversation.] I mean there are still pants around and cars. Just a matter for finding them and getting them working or clean or whatever.

Mm. Accounting isn't what it used to be, either. [The apocalypse is easier to deal with when it's a joke.] It's funny how things like pants and laundry don't matter until everyone's doomed to wearing clothes that are stapled together and never get clean.

The end of the worlds is no excuse to give up on appearances. [It's good to see a real smile, especially after this conversation's rough start.]
