DAY 365 — Anniversary Festival Mingle

Happy Day 365, Marina Nova!

Hear ye, hear ye! Inmates, prisoners, fellow underwater dwellers! Lend me your ears and hands and actually just bring all of you because we're having a ye olde Renaissance Faire to celebrate a full year in this bubble under the sea!

The dome has of course been decked out appropriately. Flickering torches light the pathways, interspersed with larger bonfires that you can cosy up to with that special someone - or perhaps just a glass of honey mead. Pennant banners hang across the gates and along the buildings, sporting the proud coat of arms of the prison (a lot of purple and octopi, for some reason) and many of the clothing stores offer time-appropriate options for those of you who still knows how to have fun. The kiosk has even been re-imagined into a castle.

Many areas within the dome has activities to partake in and, if you're skilled or lucky or both, prizes to win!

Sector 5 Gamegrounds: What better way to show your bravery than by participating in a series of tests of strength and cunning? Sector 5 provides the inmates with a chance to try such varied sports as varpa, caber tossing, ring toss or the very dignified sport of rövkrok, a type of wrestling that requires skill as well as no sense of shame. Not tough enough for you? There are also friendly foam weapons and armor available for those who want to engage in a chivalrous bout of hand to hand combat, test your archery skills — or maybe convince another prisoner to give you a piggyback ride and go jousting!

Competitors that do well enough and show outstanding bravery may be rewarded with a handful of rehab points, or a personalized pennant — or maybe a kiss from the lord or lady of your choosing!

Less violent activities: Not into skewering your neighbors on spears? Maybe you'd rather relax with a game of knucklebones, pick up sticks or Nine Men's Morris. Boards and instructions are readily available in several areas. If you're more creatively inclined there's also activity tables on offer where you can create your own coat of arms, bind yourself a flower crown or learn the art of illumination.

Food: The food carts in sector 0 are now carrying food fit for the occasion. Whole roasted pigs and poultry, wild rabbit in plum sauce, thick beef stews smelling of rich saffron, roasted vegetables (no potatoes here, no sir!) and cream-stewed cabbage for the vegetarians among us. If you're still hungry there's saffron pancake, ginger and clove cookies or bread pudding with raisins for dessert. There's plenty of mulled wine, honey mead, foaming beer, honeyd applewater and lingonberry juice to wash it down with. Enjoy!

Dance: As is custom, there will be a dance at the beach at the end of the day. Great fires will roar and a band of robots will strike up music suitable for dancing! Dress up in your finest satin and velvet, brush the extrement off your shoes and grab a partner!

Enjoy!

It does seem so. Everyone has weird universes, but there's something similar in all of them. I guess there's only so many ways to get food.

[Mal grins as he takes the pieces off the board.] You start this time.

Oh, there's plenty of options if you're not picky about it.

[ Or terribly attached to your tastebuds. Han places his piece. Hopefully he won't lose quite as badly this time. ]

Long as it ain't a protein pack. We end up eatin' that more nights'n I can count.

[Actually, the food here is one of the few perks. He's not willing to give his freedom up over it, but it is nice.]

[ Oh, that's unfortunate. ] Least the meals are a good change of pace. I don't figure Chewie would've put up with that for too long.

Who's Chewie?

[Definitely not someone he's mentioned yet.]

Co-pilot. He's, uh... [ How the kest is he gonna explain a Wookiee to someone who has no idea what a Wookiee is. ]

A Wookiee. Tall, furry, not too happy if all he gets is rations.

[Mal frowns as he tries to picture it.]

Nope. Don't have much an idea what yer talkin' about. Wookiees or anything like that.

What other sentients do you have, then?

[ It does not occur to Han that Mal is from a world that has no aliens. ]

Just humans? [ He whistles low and puts another piece on the board. That sounds... Boring as hell. ] You sure about that?

Quite. Only evidence we have of aliens is con men tryn'a scam some money. Reavers come close, but they was men once.

We've got more than I can count, and about a million languages between 'em. Your con men would have to find a better angle.

I'm sure they'd find somethin'. [He shakes his head.] Ain't used to the idea people have aliens in their world. Can't imagine sharin' the sky with even more ships'n are already out there.

Not like there isn't plenty of space. Especially when you're willing to go where no one else is. Gets a hell of a lot bigger when the hyperdrive is out, too.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Just spent way too much time looking up space technology and how big the "verse is...

Hyperdrive? We don't have nothin' like that. An' there's only so far outside you can go before yer in Reaver territory.

[ Oh, that's just unfortunate. Mal is getting sympathetic and pitying looks now. ]

So what, you're stuck in just one system?

Well... yeah. I mean... started as wherever our ships could limp to and terraform after we used up Earth that was so long ago. And we moved out from there with better technology. It's gettin' crowded, but it's home.

[To be clear, he's talking about all of it... not just one planet. The entire system.]

Though I would't mind a bit more space...

Yeah, the space is nice so long as you don't have to go between it at sub-light.

[ Han understands missing all of it. At this point he'd rather be on Tatooine so long as he had the option to get on a ship, any ship, and go. ]

But when yer out there... you don't have to deal with bein' planetside.

[Mal hates being planetside. If there were a way to keep his ship fueled and running all the time, he would.]
